At the CounterWhen you first reach the counter, you should give them your ticket and your passport. Thefirst question they usually ask is how many are traveling with you.

"Is anybody traveling with you today?"

"Is anybody else traveling with you?""re !ust you two traveling today?"

ll airlines have a list of questions they have to ask you. et#s look at some of thesequestions.

"$id someone you do not know ask you to take something on the plane with you?""$id you have possession of your luggage since you packed?""$id you leave your luggage unattended at all in the airport?""re you carrying any weapons or firearms?""re you carrying any flammable material?""$o you have any perishable food items?"

If you don#t understand, you can#t say yes or no to all of them. The correct answer forsome of them is #no# and some of them is #yes#.

"%ow many luggage are you checking in?""$o you have a carry on?"

"&an you place your bag up here?"

"%ow many carry on bags are you taking with you?"

fterwards, they might ask if you prefer an aisle seat or a window seat.

"$o you prefer window or aisle?"

If they are out of aisle seats, they will ask you if window is ok.

"We do not have any aisle seats remaining. Is a window seat ok with you or would youprefer a middle seat?"

'ome people like to be by the emergency e(it. )ou can ask for that seat.

"$o you have a seat ne(t to the emergency e(it?""&an I have a seat closest to the emergency e(it?"

If they do, then you will get a seat by the e(it, but if they don#t, they will try to give youone that is close.

"ll the seats ne(t to the e(it have been taken. I have a seat directly in front of it. Wouldyou like that one?"

*inally, they will tell you the gate number and the boarding time.

"%ere are your tickets. The gate number is on the bottom of the ticket. They will startboarding + minutes before the departure time. )ou should report to gate &+ by then. &+is around the corner and down the hall. Thank you."

Fast FoodThere are many types of restaurant. In this lesson, we will cover what you need to say infast food restaurants, regular sit down restaurants, and lu(ury fine dining restaurants.

-c$onald#s is a popular restaurant, so I will use -c$onald#s as an e(ample. The only thingyou do when you go to a fast food restaurant is to go to the counter and order your food, then pay for it. That#s all. et#s go through some quick sentences.

"Welcome to -c$onald#s. -ay I take your order?""I#ll take a ig -ac and a small coke.""/ne ig -ac and one small coke. Will that be all?"")es.""Will that be for here or to go?""*or here please.""The total comes to 01.23."

common mistake is to answer yes or no when you don#t know the answer. I heard ofmany stories when the cashier asks, #for here or to go#, and the person says, #yes#. It issimple to avoid this mistake by studying and being prepared.

In most fastfood restaurants, it is even easier to order. They have value meals and you !ust have to say a number.

"I#ll take number +."

ut the difference is that there are si4es.

"Would you like medium, large, or super si4e?"

"-edium please."

Regular Restaurant OrderingWhen you sit down to eat at a restaurant remember to leave a tip. The average youshould leave is 56 percent.

fter you are seated, the first thing they ask is if you want something to drink.

"&an I get you a drink?""&an I get a drink for you?""Would you like to order a drink now?""&an I get a drink started for you?""What would you like to drink?"

"I#ll take a coke.""I#ll have an orange !uice.""Water will be fine.""&an I have a glass of water?"

fter they bring out your drinks, they will take your order. The reason they do this isbecause most people know what they want to drink, but want a few minutes to decidewhat to eat.

"-ay I take your order?""What would you like to order?"

18

Page 19: Frases y Palabras Usuales de Ingles Para Viajar

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/frases-y-palabras-usuales-de-ingles-para-viajar 19/28

"re you ready to order?""What would you like today?"

If you need more time, you can simply say, "&an I have a couple more minutes?"

When you are ready to order, !ust read off what you want.

"I#ll take the 'alisbury steak with hash browns."

$epending on what you order, they will have side options they will ask you about. istencarefully to your choices and choose one. )ou should prepare yourself by reading themenu carefully. It should indicate what your options are.

"Would you like toast, a muffin, or a cornbread?"

Regular Restaurant Eating andRequesting Bill

-ost places will come by once when you are eating and ask how everything is. This is achance for you to order something else, complain about something, or get a refill on yourdrink. 'ome of the things they might say are7

"%ow is everything?""Is everything ok?""%ow is your dinner?""%ow is your lunch?"

"re you guys doing ok?""$o you need anything else?"

When you are almost done with your meal, they might ask if you want some dessert.

"Would you like dessert today?""Would you like our dessert menu?""Would you like to order any dessert?""ny dessert for you today?""Would you like to hear our dessert special?"

If you are finished and want your bill, you can look for the server, make eye contact, and

raise your hand. When they come by, ask them for the bill.

"&an I have my check?""&an I have my bill?""I#m ready for my bill.""I would like my check please."

Fine Dining

The process of fine dining is very similar to the previous e(ample. I#ll list a couple ofadditions for fine dining that I didn#t include above.

19

If you order wine, they will pour a tiny bit into your glass. )ou should immediately take adrink of it and shake your head yes. fter you approve, they will pour your glass and otherglasses full of the wine.

'ome restaurants need to prepare dessert + minutes in advance. That means they willask you if you are going to have dessert while you are eating instead of waiting for you tocomplete.

*inally, these types of restaurants take reservations. %ere is an e(ample of making areservation through the phone.

"%ello, -c&ormick#s. %ow may I help you today?""I would like to make a reservation.""What day did you want to come in?""This *riday at 37pm.""We have a table at 3756. Will that be acceptable?"")es."

"-ay I have your name?""8ich )u. That#s ) 9.""I have reserved a table for -r. )u on *riday at 3756. Is there anything else I can do foryou?""That will be all.""Thank you for calling.""Thank you. :ood ye."":ood ye."

When you come in, you can tell them that you have a reservation.

"%i, I have a reservation at 3756 for 8ich )u."

"/h, yes. -r. )u, your table will be ready in !ust a moment. )ou can wait right over there. "

Talking to StrangersThere are many opportunities to talk with strangers. If you are waiting for a bus, or if youare waiting in line, strangers start talking to each other. nother opportunity is if you areon a ferry or in the park sitting on a bench. asically, opportunities can come everywhere.)ou should practice this section if you want to talk with different people. Talking tostrangers require a lot of small talk. )ou can study more about small talk in the ;nglishesson section. *or now, we will cover things like talking about where you came from.

If you look like a tourist, some people will ask where you are from. This is !ust a way toget to know strangers. It#s quite common to talk with strangers here. %ere are somequestions you might hear.

"re you visiting from somewhere?"")es. I#m visiting from <orea."

"re you on vacation here?"")es. I#m taking a vacation from <orea."

It#s very common for strangers to talk to each other if you are at a tourist location. *ore(ample, if you are at $isney and and you are sitting down, someone ne(t to you might

20

Page 21: Frases y Palabras Usuales de Ingles Para Viajar

ask some questions assuming you are visiting from somewhere.

"%ow are you en!oying your vacation?""I#m having a great time. %ow about you?"

"It#s pretty fun here. re you having a good time?""This is a great place. I#m having a lot of fun. re you having fun?"

"re you here with your family?""I#m here with my wife and + kids. They are so e(cited to be here."

"-y kids love this place. This is our third time here. %ave you been here before?""This is my first time here. I always wanted to come and I#m having a great time."

Starting a ConversationThe best time to start a conversation is when you are ne(t to someone who is not moving.)ou can#t start talking to someone walking away from you. Then you are bothering themby making them stop. ut if you are sitting down on a bench and someone is ne(t to you,or you are at a beach and someone is close by, you can start a conversation by sayingsomething generic. %ere are some conversation starting sentences. ut after you makeyour first sentence, you should see by their reaction if they want to continue theconversation or not. If they appear a little rude, then stop talking to them. )ou don#t haveto say anything to stop talking. They don#t e(pect you to. They e(pect you to not sayanother word. ut if they ask a question back, and they seem friendly, then you cancontinue with the conversation.

"The weather is so nice today. re you from around here?""%ow is your day going so far?""There are a lot of people out here today. Is this normal?"

n easy way to start talking is when you notice something such as their kids, family, or adog they might be with.

"re you here with your family?""re you on vacation?"

"re those your kids? They#re so cute?""What kind of dog is that?"

It#s much easier if they start the conversation. If they make a comment or ask a question, then you know that they would like to talk.

*inally, it#s common for these types of conversation to last only a couple of minutes. 'odon#t feel bad or feel pressured to keep the conversation alive.

There isn#t that much more to tell you about speaking with strangers. The best way tounderstand what types of things are said in a stranger to stranger conversation is to heara couple of e(amples. I will give a couple e(amples to help you understand more.
