Fifth Sunday of Easter May 19, 2019

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. [John 13:34-35]

Last Monday night I went to visit my niece, Maddie, in Dahlonega. She had just returned from Germany with her fiancée. Members of her former church youth group threw a party for them to welcome Sebastian. I tagged along and the little community welcomed me as well. The welcome was so genuine and warm, the young so mature and gracious, their affection for one another so deep and authentic that I was profoundly moved. The previous Saturday I had a house blessing here in the parish with an accompanying fiesta and I was moved here as well. I mention these examples because this is how the world is being made new, by people who RE-ALLY care for one another, renewing one another by their honoring of one another, by reverent respect and care demonstrated by their shared stories and graciousness.

As we celebrate First Holy Communion this Sunday I am wondering about the abiding communion that we have in our homes that we invite one another in to share. “Living the Eu-charist” is not just a program, but a way of life. This weekend we pause to reflect on how it’s going, how are we visiting one another’s homes and sharing from the heart. Do we allow ourselves to be loved? Do we invest ourselves and our time in friendships that are nurtured over the years, through tough times of testing as well as leisurely times of resting? Have we prayed with these friends? Have we shared scripture with them? Or do we know how to be intimate with other Catho-lics? Lately the fellowship shared at “Resurrection Lunch-eons” after funerals have been a revelation of so many things to be cherished. How do we help one another begin the jour-ney of faith anew?

Question for the week: What needs to be made new in my world and our world?

Word for the week: “domestic church” is where love begins; family caring for one another and service launch us into the larger body of Christ.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Como yo los he amado, así deben ustedes amar a los de-más. Así es como todos conocerán que son mis discípulos, si se tienen amor los unos a los otros. [Juan 13:34-35]

El lunes pasado fui a visitar a mi sobrina, Maddie, en Dah-lonega. Ella acababa de regresar de Alemania con su pro-metido. Miembros del grupo juvenil de su iglesia pasada les hicieron una fiesta a ellos para darle la bienvenida a Sebas-tián. Yo me uní y la pequeña comunidad me recibió a mí también. La bienvenida fue tan genuina y calurosa, los jóve-nes tan maduros y amables, su afecto de uno por los otros tan profundo y auténtico, que me sentí profundamente con-movido. El sábado pasado tuve una bendición de una casa aquí en la parroquia con una fiesta y estuve conmovido aquí también. Menciono estos ejemplos porque así es como el mundo se hace nuevo, por gente que REALMENTE se preo-cupan unos por los otros, renovándose uno a otro, honrándo-se uno a otro, por medio de un respeto reverente y un cariño demostrado por sus historias compartidas y su amabilidad.

Al celebrar las Primeras Comuniones este domingo yo me pregunto acerca de la unión permanente que tenemos en nuestros hogares y que invitamos unos a otros a compartir. “Viviendo la Eucaristía” es no solo un programa, pero una manera de vivir. Este fin de semana hacemos una pausa para reflexionar en como eso está yendo, como estamos visi-tándonos en las casas de cada uno y compartiendo desde el corazón. ¿Nos permitimos ser amados? ¿Investimos en nosotros mismos y nuestro tiempo en amistades para alimen-tarnos a través de los años, a través de tiempos duros de testimonio lo mismo que tiempos de descanso? ¿Hemos re-zado con esos amigos? ¿Hemos compartido las escrituras con ellos? ¿O sabemos cómo ser íntimos con otros católi-cos? Últimamente la camaradería compartida en los “Almuerzos de Resurrección” después de los funerales han sido una revelación de tantas cosas que deben ser aprecia-das. ¿Como nos ayudamos unos a los otros en el nuevo ca-mino de fe?

Pregunta de la semana: ¿Que tiene que hacerse nuevo en mi mundo y en nuestro mundo?

Palabra de la semana: “iglesia doméstica” es donde el amor comienza; la familia preocupándose unos por los otros y sir-viendo de lanzamiento para nosotros hacia el más amplio cuerpo de Cristo.

The Death of Michael Johnson: We thank the choir and the

CCW ladies who helped us so quickly care for the family and

friends of Michael Johnson who died Tuesday morning;

quickly we rallied to celebrate his Wake and Visitation

Wednesday evening and his funeral Mass at noon on Thurs-

day. He was a loving presence, even with his disability, in

our midst for so many years! We extend condolences to his

family: “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may your

perpetual light shine upon him.”

This Pilgrim-age is more like a retreat, NOT a tour, but a way of traveling faith that is a journey of a lifetime.
