L a ciudad de Valencia es la capital de laComunidad Valenciana y de la provin-cia de Valencia. Está situada en la

mitad este de España, a orillas del MarMediterráneo. La ciudad esta considerada latercera ciudad más grande de España, con unapoblación de 1.500.000 habitantes.

La Provincia de Valencia tiene un área aproxi-madamente de 10.807 km2. En el interior seencuentran numerosas montañas y bosques,mientras que la costa es totalmente plana ycon multitud de playas.También posee un granlago conocido como La Albufera.

Dadas sus características e infraestructura,Valencia y sus alrededores constituyen un cen-tro de atracción turística. Tiene un clima muyagradable durante todo el año, con más de300 días de sol al año, y una temperaturamedia de 16.7ºC.

1.1 Orígenes

La ciudad de Valencia fue fundada por losromanos en el año 138 antes de Cristo, bajo elnombre de “Valentia”, que ha conservadohasta nuestros días.Valencia ha visto unavariedad de distintas culturas a través de la

historia: los Romanos, Visigodos y los Árabeshicieron de la ciudad un importante centrocultural y financiero. En el año 1094 El CidCampeador conquistó Valencia a los Árabes,sin embargo en 1102 fue reconquistada por los mismos. Fue en 1238 cuando el ReyJaime I de Aragón reconquistó la ciudad definitivamente.

Durante los siglos XV y XVI, llegó a ser una delas grandes fuerzas económicas delMediterráneo, este periodo es conocido comoEl Siglo de Oro de Valencia, que además enfa-tiza su esplendor artístico. Durante la segundamitad del siglo XIX, Valencia se convirtió en elbastión de los Republicanos y Socialistas.Durante la Guerra Civil Española, se convirtióen capital de la república. Y desde 1982 es lacapital de la Comunidad Valenciana.

1.2 Comunicaciones

La ciudad de Valencia es de fácil acceso, exis-ten diversas formas de llegar a ella.

Avión

El aeropuerto internacional deValencia se encuentra en la localidad deManises, a unos 8 kilómetros del centro de la

ciudad. Ofrece varios vuelos diarios a las ciu-dades españolas más importantes y otras ciu-dades del mundo. También hay numerososvuelos a Madrid y Barcelona en conexión aotros vuelos intercontinentales. Un taxi desdeel aeropuerto a la ciudad cuesta alrededor de13.00 €

Existe también una ruta de autobús que va alaeropuerto, se trata de un autobús amarillo, elnº 30 de la compañía CVT, que tiene rutatodos los días excepto domingos y días festi-vos. Su coste es de 1.70€, y conecta el aero-puerto con la Estación de Autobuses, situadaen la calle Menéndez Pidal nº 13✆ +34 963 466 266

Red de carreteras

Valencia esta conectada con el resto deEuropa a través de la Autopista delMediterráneo (A-7).También a través de carre-teras nacionales como la N-III, N-332, N-340,la N-234 y la Autovía A3 Madrid-Valencia.

La llamada Estación del Norte, es laprincipal estación de trenes en Valencia y estásituada en pleno centro de la ciudad, en laCalle Xativa, cruce con la Calle Marqués deSotelo.

1.3 Clima

Valencia posee uno de los climas más benig-nos de Europa. Se caracteriza por un climasuave, típicamente mediterráneo, con unatemperatura media anual superior a los 17ºC.Los veranos son cálidos y los inviernos muymoderados. Durante los meses invernales latemperatura no suele bajar de los 10º C. Lasprecipitaciones son discretas y presentan elclásico mínimo estival mediterráneo, con dosmáximos, uno en otoño y otro a finales deinvierno y principios de primavera.

2.2 El Campus de Vera

El Campus de Vera esta situado en la ciudad de Valencia, en la parte norte de la misma, junto alcomienzo de la autopista a Barcelona, conocida como A-7 o E-15.

2.3 Transporte al Campus de Vera

Aparte del transporte privado, existen otros medios para llegar al Campus de Vera. Puedes usar losautobuses rojos de la EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes). Existen ocho líneas, con numero-sas paradas en la ciudad de Valencia que llegan al Campus, estas líneas son:

2.1 Un poco de Historia

Nuestra Universidad es una institución joven.Su historia se remonta a tan sólo 35 años, apesar de que algunos de sus centros tienenmás de un siglo de existencia, es el caso de laEscuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería delDiseño, la Escuela Politécnica Superior deAlcoy y la Facultad de Bellas Artes.

En 1971 es cuando nuestra Institución se cons-tituye definitivamente en UniversidadPolitécnica de Valencia.A partir de ese momen-to, comienzan a incorporarse el resto de cen-tros: La Facultad de Bellas Artes, la EscuelaTécnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño, laEscuela Politécnica de Alcoy, la Escuela TécnicaSuperior de Gestión en la Edificación, la EscuelaTécnica Superior del Medio Rural y Enología yla Escuela Técnica Superior de InformáticaAplicada, la Facultad de Informática, la EscuelaTécnica Superior de Ingeniería Geodésica,Cartográfica y Topográfica, y la Escuela TécnicaSuperior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación.

En 1994 el centro de Alcoy pasa a ser EscuelaPolitécnica Superior y, en 1993, se funda laEscuela de Gandia, que se constituye comoEscuela Politécnica Superior durante el cursoacadémico 1999-2000. Asimismo, durante esecurso, se pone en marcha la Facultad deAdministración y Dirección de Empresas.

En la actualidad, nuestra comunidad universi-taria está formada por unos 39.000 miembros.De ellos, cerca de 35.000 son alumnos, 2.387son profesores y 1.593 integran el grupo depersonal de la administración y servicios. LaUPV está constituida por 15 centros universi-tarios, de los que 10 son escuelas técnicassuperiores, 3 son facultades y 2 son escuelaspolitécnicas superiores. Además, cuenta con 5centros adscritos (Escuela Universitaria FordEspaña, Facultad de Estudios de la Empresa,Florida Universitaria, Mediterranean Universityof Science & Technology y Escuela de TurismoPax) y una extensión universitaria.

La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia se cons-tituye de tres campus:

Campus de Vera

El cual constituye la mayor parte de la univer-sidad y está situado en la ciudad de Valencia.

Campus de Gandia

Situado en la localidad de Gandia (Provinciade Valencia).

Campus de Alcoy

Situado en la localidad de Alcoy (Provincia deAlicante).

2.4 Estructura de los estudios

Los estudios (diplomaturas, ingenierías técnicas, ingenierías y licenciaturas) en la UniversidadPolitécnica de Valencia se estructuran, de acuerdo con la legislación española, en tres ciclos.Además la UPV ofrece diversos cursos de postgrado así como numerosos Masters universitarios.La estructura de los estudios en España está siendo en estos momentos revisada y pronto seemprenderán las reformas necesarias emanadas del Proceso de Bolonia, que pretende ofrecer unmarco común de estructuras de títulos universitarios en Europa.

Los estudios de Primer Ciclo

Estos estudios normalmente se desarrollan en un periodo de 3 años, y al final del mismo se debepresentar un Proyecto Fin de Carrera. A la finalización de estos estudios se obtiene la titulaciónde Ingeniera/o Técnica/o.

Estudios de Primero y Segundo Ciclo

Estos estudios se realizan en un periodo de 5 años, y en la mayoría de ellos debes realizar un ProyectoFin de Carrera al finalizar. Al final de los estudios se obtiene la titulación de Ingeniero/a Superior,Arquitecto/a, o Licenciado/a, en la correspondiente especialidad.

Estudios de Segundo Ciclo

Estos estudios se realizan generalmente en un periodo de 2 años y debes realizar al final unProyecto Fin de Carrera. Para cursar este ciclo debes haber completado con anterioridad los estu-dios de Primer Ciclo. Al final de los estudios se obtiene la titulación de Ingeniero/a Superior,Arquitecto/a, o Licenciado/a, en la correspondiente especialidad.

Estudios de Tercer Ciclo

Estos estudios reciben el nombre de Doctorado, el periodo de duración de los mismos va de 2 a5 años. Es requisito indispensable tener la titulación de Ingeniero/a Superior, Arquitecto/a, oLicenciado/a. Una vez finalizados y superados los estudios de Tercer Ciclo obtendrás el grado de“DOCTOR”.

2.8 Español para Estudiantes Extranjeros de Intercambio

El Departamento de Idiomas de la UPV organiza la asignatura: “Español para Extranjeros”. Existenvarios niveles, por lo que los estudiantes deben hacer un examen, a su llegada a la UPV, para podermatricularse en el nivel adecuado. La matrícula en esta asignatura es gratis y los alumnos que lasuperen obtienen los créditos correspondientes.

Además La Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandía también organiza al principio de cada semes-tre cursos intensivos de Español para extranjeros. Los alumnos pueden encontrar informaciónsobre estos cursos en la página web de La Oficina de Programas Internacionales.

2.9 Calificaciones y notas

2.10 Idiomas de instrucción de las enseñanzas

Las clases en la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia se imparten mayoritariamente en castellanoaunque también se imparte docencia en Valenciano.

2.11 Docencia en Inglés

La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, en su constante afán de adaptación a las necesidades rea-les de la sociedad actual, promoción de la participación internacional en la educación, y adecua-ción a las exigencias de la sociedad de hoy, viene ofreciendo desde hace algunos años la docen-cia en inglés de determinadas asignaturas. 3.2 Programa Mentor

Cada estudiante extranjero tendrá asignadoun tutor que supervisará su trabajo y le ayuda-rá a resolver los problemas que puedan apare-cer durante sus estancia en la UPV.

3.3 Sesiones Orientativas

La Oficina de Programas Internacionales deIntercambio (OPII) organiza una semana antesdel comienzo de las clases, uno o dos días desesiones orientativas para estudiantes extran-jeros de intercambio. Durante estas sesiones,se informa al estudiante de las facilidades yservicios que ofrece la UPV, tales como activi-dades deportivas, servicios de biblioteca, acti-vidades culturales, cursos de español etc. A sullegada a la Universidad se le proporcionará alalumno información sobre el programa de lapróxima sesión orientativa.

3.4 Alojamiento

La Oficina de Programas Internacionales deIntercambio (OPII) de la UPV proporcionaayuda a los estudiantes extranjeros en la bús-queda de alojamiento a través de la informa-ción que les proporcionamos en el momentode su llegada y además a través de la base dedatos de pisos para alquilar y compartir quelos alumnos encontrarán el la versión Inglesade la siguiente página web:

Existen diferentes tipos de alojamiento entrelos cuales el estudiante puede elegir:

a) Pisos compartidos con estudiantes

Es la forma más habitual de alojamiento,por su bajo coste económico y por la granindependencia que supone. Los pisos puedencompartirse con estudiantes españoles oextranjeros.

El precio medio varia entre 100 y 190€ pormes y persona, no incluye gastos de agua, gasy electricidad. Deberás abonar un depósito dedinero equivalente a un mes de alquiler, paracubrir posibles daños en la propiedad. El depó-sito te será devuelto en cuanto dejes la vivien-da si está en buen estado.

Aconsejamos a los estudiantes que chequeenbien el piso y se aseguren de que entiendenbien las condiciones del contrato de alquiler.

b) Estancia con una familia

La estancia con una familia es similar a pen-sión completa, que incluye 3 comidas al día, omedia pensión que solo incluye dos.

El precio por mes es aproximadamente de450.00€ pensión completa, o 325.00€ mediapensión.

Existe una opción adicional de lavada y plan-chado de ropa.

c) Colegios Mayores (Residencias de Estudiantes)

Existen residencias privadas donde puedesalquilar una habitación. Existe también la posi-bilidad de media pensión o pensión completa.

Los precios anuales son aproximadamente de:

• Habitación individual, pensión completa desde 580€ / mes

• Habitación doble, pensión completadesde 530€ / mes

• Habitación indivividual, media pensióndesde 500€ / mes

• Habitación doble, media pensión desde 400€ / mes.

En el caso de que una habitación se alquile poruna semana o un mes, el precio variará.

La Biblioteca posee los materiales necesariospara el estudio de cualquier ingeniería o licen-ciatura. 4.6 CEDAT: Facilidades para personas con alguna discapacidad en la UPV

La Fundación CEDAT nació en el seno de laUniversidad Politécnica de Valencia por inicia-tiva de su rectorado, es un instrumento de ase-soramiento e información para que las perso-nas discapacitadas que estudian y trabajan enla Universidad. La UPV está conectada a través del network“upvnet”, network que ofrece un amplio servi-cio a la comunidad universitaria, tales como e-mails, noticias, programas, etc. Estos serviciosse actualizan continuamente y además incor-poran siempre la ultima tecnología. 4.4 Área de Deportes

Dentro del campus de la UPV existe el Área deDeportes, que ofrece una gran variedad deactividades a diferentes niveles. El Campus deVera cuenta con unas excelentes instalacionesdeportivas, piscina climatizada, campos de fútbol y rugby, 4 pistas de tenis, 2 de squash,2 de padel, 3 campos de baloncesto, pista defutbito, volleyball, gimnasio, artes marciales,yoga, vela, esgrima, waterpolo …

A lo largo del año se organizan competicionesde diversos deportes como tenis, ping-pong,badminton, squash y ajedrez. También existenligas que son organizadas por las diversasescuelas y facultades. 4.9 La Asociación A.E.G.E.E.en Valencia

Tiene su sede en la planta 3ª de la Casa delAlumno, Edificio 4K. Este es el acronismo parala Asociación de Jóvenes Europeos, que es unaasociación apolítica, no-religiosa y sin animode lucro, cuyo principal objetivo es promover eintegrar la cooperación europea dentro delmarco universitario.

Esta asociación esta dentro de la AEGEE deEuropa, fundada en 1985, y tiene más de15.000 miembros en más de 150 universida-des de la Unión Europea. A lo largo del añoorganizan diferentes actividades para promo-cionar e informar sobre las diversas culturasexistentes en Europa, así como de la movilidadexistente.

La Casa del Alumno está situada en el edificio4K. La misión principal del Centro de Lenguas es laorganización y puesta en marcha de la docen-cia e investigación relacionadas con los idiomas incluidos en los planes de estudio dela UPV.

Bancos

Existen 3 bancos situados en elÁgora y otro en el Edificio del Galileo Galilei.Están abiertos de lunes a viernes de 8.15 am a2.30 pm. Existen también cajeros automáticosen cada uno de estos bancos.

Comidas

En el Campus de Vera hay ocho cafe-terías que sirven comida a lo largo de todo eldía. Están abiertas desde las 8.00 de la maña-na hasta las 20.00 de la tarde. Existe un menúde alrededor de 3.50 €, del que los estudian-tes pueden elegir entre primer y segundos pla-tos, ensalada, pan y postre. Los menús varíancada día de la semana.

La Oficina Verde

Situada en el Edificio 6E, junto alGabinete Médico.Tiene asignadas tareas de gestión y desarrollode proyectos medioambientales. Su funciónprincipal es la coordinación de la implantacióndel sistema de gestión ambiental en la UPV,según la norma ISO 14001. También coordinala recogida de toda clase de residuos genera-dos en la universidad y ofrece servicios deinformación y documentación medioambien-tal de soporte a la docencia e investigación.

5.1 Transporte Público dentro de la ciudad

Buses

La compañía pública de transporteurbano EMT, es la encargada de dirigir el servi-cio de autobuses dentro de la ciudad. Hay másde 51 rutas que conectan diferentes zonas dela ciudad.Un billete sencillo de autobús cuesta 1.10€, yse adquiere al entrar en el autobús. Los hora-rios varían de línea a línea, pero normalmentelos autobuses circulan de 5.30 am hasta las11.00 pm, cada 10 ó 20 minutos.

Existen 7 líneas nocturnas de autobuses, quecirculan desde las 11.00 pm hasta las 3.00 am,cada 45 minutos.

En la ciudad de Valencia existe una redde metro con 5 líneas diferentes. El metro cir-cula desde las 5.00 am hasta las 11.00 pm. LaLínea 4 es un TRANVÍA que pasa por Campusde Vera.

Dentro de la zona urbana, el ticket cuesta1.20€, y puedes adquirirlo en la misma esta-ción. También puedes adquirir bonos de 10viajes (Bonometro) en las estaciones, quioscosy estancos, cuyo precio va de 5.40 a 15.90€dependiendo de las zonas por las que te vayasa trasladar.

5.5 Vida Cultural

En Valencia tienen lugar multitud de activida-des culturales. Puedes encontrar teatros dondese representan numerosas y variadas obrasteatrales. La vida nocturna en Valencia es muy emocio-nante y popular. La noches valencianas sonmuy famosas, existen multitud de locales paratodos los gustos. Hay pubs, cafeterias, discote-cas, salones de baile, etc.

Las zonas más populares para salir por la nocheson: Barrio del Carmen,Avd. Blasco Ibáñez (cercadel final de la misma), Plaza del Cedro, Calle JuanLloréns, Avd. de Aragón, Plaza Canovas, PlazaXuquer, Zona Alameda, Ruzafa, etc.

5.7 Festividades Locales

La gente de Valencia es muy abierta, y genero-sa y además le encantan las fiestas al aire libre.Los ingredientes básicos de las fiestas valen-cianas son la luz, la pólvora, fuegos artificiales,música, etc.Las FALLAS son las fiestas principales deValencia. Se celebran del 12 al 19 de marzo.Son una explosión de colores y fuegos artifi-ciales. Monumentos de cartón piedra, llama-dos Fallas, se “plantan” por toda la ciudad ypueblos de la provincia. La gente se viste entrajes tradicionales, cada mediodía a las 14.00horas tiene lugar la popular “Mascletà” en laPlaza del Ayuntamiento. Tradicionalmente, sehace una ofrenda de flores a la Virgen de losDesamparados.

Otros sitios de interés

La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias es elemblema de la Comunidad Valenciana delsiglo XXI, diseñado como centro de arte, cultu-ra y recreo. Es de gran interés arquitectónico yturístico. Un lugar único en el mundo para dis-frutar de todo lo que ofrece.

La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias está en elantiguo cauce del rio Turia, en el área dondeempieza la autopista del Saler. Tiene unasuperficie de 350.000 m2, repartidos en cuatroáreas :El Palacio de las Artes, espacio plurifuncionalconstruido para diversas actividades cultura-les, tales como ópera por ejemplo;L'Hemisfèric, cine-planetario con pantallaIMAX. Museo de las Ciencias, museo con exhi-biciones relacionadas con la ciencia y la tecno-logía; y L'Oceanogràfic, gran parque con zonade relax y gran acuario de la ciudad deValencia.

Además en la ciudad de Valencia puedesencontrar numerosos espacios verdes y jardi-nes donde disfrutar de las actividades al airelibre tales como: El Jardín Botánico, el Cauceviejo del río, los Viveros, etc.

5.3 Playas

En la Comunidad Valenciana existen 485 kiló-metros de costa. Existen playas de todo tipo alo largo del litoral. La arena varia desde muyfina y dorada a más granulada o incluso puedellegar a convertirse en gravilla. Todas las playastienen un espléndido clima y luminosidad.

Al norte del puerto de Valencia, se encuentranlas playas del Levante, las Arenas y laMalvarrosa, las más cercanas a la ciudad, acce-sibles con transporte público. Existen restau-rantes típicos en la zona, donde puedes degus-tar deliciosos platos valencianos.

Al sur de la ciudad encontrarás la playa dePinedo. Más al sur, a unos 8 kms se encuentrala Playa del Saler, situada en un área de graninterés ecológico, junto al lago de La Albufera.

La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia emiteun carnet de estudiante para TODOS LOSESTUDIANTES, conocido como el Carnet deEstudiante de la UPV, que permite el uso detodos los servicios y facilidades existentes enla UPV. Con este carnet puedes obtener des-cuentos en tiendas, cines, teatro, etc.

El Gobierno Valenciano (GV) y el IVAJ(Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud) ofrece alos estudiantes menores de 26 años el llama-do Carnet Jove (en Europa, Under 26 Card)que da derecho a descuentos en tiendas, cine,teatro, transporte público, alojamiento, etc.Puede usarse en 28 países europeos. Este car-net tiene una validez bianual, hace falta unafoto y un pago de 7.14€

6.1 Seguro Médico

Los estudiantes europeos están cubiertos porla Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea, el E-128 y el E-111, que se emiten en el país de origen.

Existen otros países que no pertenecen a laUnión Europea, pero con los que el estadoespañol tiene acuerdos, como por ejemplo:Andorra, Brasil, Chile, Ecuador, Panamá,Paraguay, Perú, Suiza, Marruecos, etc. En estoscasos, tendrás que contactar con la Embajadapara más información.

También puedes obtener un seguro privadoque te cubra durante tu estancia en España, elcoste del mismo variará dependiendo de losservicios que te ofrezca.

Es muy importante que el estudiante clarifi-que con seguridad las condiciones del seguromédico antes de dejar su país. La UniversidadPolitécnica de Valencia no admitirá a ningún estudiantes que no tenga un seguromédico (privado o público).

6.2 Permiso de Estancia:Visados

La Oficina de Programas Internacionales deIntercambio (OPII), de la UniversidadPolitécnica de Valencia, ofrece un servicio pararegular la estancia de los estudiantes enEspaña.

Si no eres ciudadano de la UE o de Austria,Alemania, Belgica, Dinamarca, Finlandia,Francia, Grecia, Irlanad, Islandía, Italia,Liechtenstein, Luxemburgo, Noruega, Holanda,Portugal, Reino Unido, Suiza, Suecia, Chipre,Eslovakia, Eslovenia, Estonia, Hungria, Latvia,Lithuania, Malta, Polonia o Republica Checa,debes obtener el Visado de Estudiante en laEmbajada o Consulado Español de tu país deorigen antes de venir a España. Una vez lleguesa España, y dependiendo del visado de estu-dios obtenido deberás,en el plazo de 30 díasdesde tu entrada en el país o en un país delTratado de Schengen, regularizar tu situación,solicitando El Permiso de Estancia porEstudios.

Existen cabinas telefónicas por toda la ciudady en el Campus de Vera, que puedes usar conmonedas o tarjetas. Las tarjetas de teléfonopueden adquirirse en Estancos. Existe un telé-fono de información nacional el 11818, elcoste de la llamada es de 0.35€ el minuto, yotro de información internacional el 11825

Para hacer llamadas internacionales desdeEspaña, debes seguir los siguientes pasos :

T The city of Valencia is the capital ofthe “Comunidad Valenciana” and theprovince of Valencia. It is located in

the middle-east of Spain, on the shore of theMediterranean Sea. The city is considered thethird largest city of the Spanish State, accor-ding to its population rate, 1.500.000 inhabi-tants.

The province of Valencia has an area of appro-ximately 10,807 km2. Inland, you can findmountainous areas whilst on the coast theland is completehy flat, and has many beachesas well as a big lake called “La Albufera”.

1.1 Origins

Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138BC, and named “Valentia”, which has remainedup to the present day.Valencia has seen avariety of different cultures throughout itslong history: The Romans, the Visigoths andthe Moors made the city an important centreof culture and finance. In the year 1094,“El CidCampeador” conquered Valencia from theMoors, however in 1102 it was reconquered bythe Moors. Finally in 1238, Jaume I de Aragonreconquered the city for good.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, it becameone of the great economic forces of theMediterranean; this period is known as“Valencian Golden Century”, which emphasi-ses its artistic splendour. During the secondhalf of the 19th century, Valencia became thebastion of Republican and Socialist ideas.

In the Civil War, it was converted into theRepublican Capital after the removal of thegovernment from Madrid (1937-1939). Since1982 it has been the capital of the ValencianRegion.

1.2 Access to the City

The city has excellent transport links.There aredifferent ways to access the city of Valencia.

Plane

The international airport of Valencia(VLC) is based in the town of “Manises” whichis about eight kilometres west of the city. Itoffers daily flights to major Spanish cities andoverseas. There are also a great number offlights which go to Barcelona and Madrid as aconnection with other flights. If you take a taxifrom the city to the airport, it may cost youabout 13 g, however this price may varydepending on the traffic.

There is also a bus route that goes to the air-port, it is a yellow bus of the CVT company,bus number 30, which runs every day exceptSundays and bank holidays. It costs 1.70 g andconnects the airport and the bus station whichis situated in C/Menéndez Pidal 13. Road network

Valencia is connected with the rest of Europethrough the so called Mediterranean highway (A-7 or E-15) and the national roads N-III (E-901), N-332, N-340 and N-234 connect thecity with the rest of the country.

Trains

Valencia enjoys a mild temperateMediterranean climate. The average annualtemperature is 17ºC with warm summers andvery mild winters, rarely below 10ºC. There isonly light rainfall mainly in autumn and thebeginning of spring.

2.2 How to get to the Vera Campus Site

The Vera Campus Site is located in the City of Valencia, on the Northern side at the beginning ofthe motorway that leads to Barcelona (A-7 or E-15).

2.3 Transport to Vera CampusApart from private transport, there are different ways of getting to the Vera Campus Site, by usingpublic transport.

You can use the EMT buses net (the local bus company). There are eight routes, with bus stops indifferent parts of the city, which go to the Campus. These routes are:

Our University is a young institution. Its his-tory goes back only thirty years, even thoughsome of its schools have existed for more thana century, as the School of Engineering Design,the Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy andthe Faculty of Fine Arts.

The University was founded in 1968-1969 withthe creation of the Higher Polytechnic Schoolof Valencia. However, it was not until the 11thof March 1971 when a decree gave the HigherPolytechnic School of Valencia the highest aca-demic rank and our institution finally becamethe Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. Fromthen on, several institutions were incorporated:The Faculty of Fine Arts , the School ofEngineering Design, the School of AppliedComputing Science., the Faculty of ComputingScience, the School of Engineering in Geodesy,Cartography and Surveying and the School ofTelecommunications Engineering.

The School of Alcoy became the HigherPolytechnic School of Alcoy in 1994 , and in1993 the School of Gandia was created andlater became the Higher Polytechnic School ofGandia during the 1999-2000 academic year.The Faculty of Business Administration andManagement started its activities during thesame year.

Today, over 39,000 members integrate ouracademic community: 35,000 of these arestudents, 2,387 are teachers and 1,593 belongto the administration and services personnel.The UPV is comprised of 15 centres: ten scho-ols, three faculties, and two higher polytechnicschools (Alcoy and Gandia). It is also formedby five associated institutions (the TechnicalSchool of Industrial Engineering, located at theFord Motor Company in Spain; the Faculty ofBusiness Studies, the Florida University Centre;the Mediterranean University of Science &Technology and the Pax School of Tourism)and by one university extension.

The “Universidad Politécnica de Valencia” offers degree courses in the three different Spanishcycles or periods of higher education, which are regulated by the Spanish legislation. Additionallythere are several Master degrees and postgraduate courses available.The structure of studies in Spain is now being reviewed and will be soon modified in order to meetthe needs of the Bologna Process, which aims at offering a common frame of university degreestructures in Europe.

First Cycle coursesThe average period of these studies is three years and, at the end of them, a final project must be submitted. At the end of these studies you obtain a degree in Technical Engineering / IngenieríaTécnica or Technical Architecture / Arquitectura Técnica, with the corresponding major.

First and Second Cycle coursesThe average period for these degrees is five years and you have to accomplish a final project foralmost all of these degrees. At the end of these courses you gain a degree in Engineering/Ingeniería, Architecture / Arquitectura or a Bachelor / Licenciatura, with the major that corres-ponds to each of these.

Second Cycle coursesThe average period for these degrees is two years and you must accomplish a final project foralmost all of these degrees. To enrol in these courses it is compulsory to have completed FirstCycle studies. At the end of these courses you obtain a degree in Engineering /Ingeniería,Architecture / Arquitectura or a Bachelor / Licenciatura, with the major that corresponds to eachof these.

Third Cycle studiesThese degrees are Doctorates. A necessary prerequisite for one of these degrees is a Bachelor /Licenciatura, an Architecture / Arquitectura degree or an Engineering / Ingeniería degree. Onceyou have finished these studies you obtain the title of “Doctor” with the correspondingmajor.There are different doctorate courses that are supervised by different departments accor-ding to the major that is chosen. The minimum period of these studies is two years.

2.8 Spanish courses for foreign students

The Languages Department of the UPV organises the course: “Spanish as a foreign language”.There are several levels, for which students will need to do an exam when they first arrive at theUPV, in order to register to the adequate level. Enrolment into this course is free of cost for theforeign exchange students of UPV. Students who will pass the exam will obtain the correspon-ding credits, which will appear in the exchange certificate.

The Languages Department also organises, with the Centre of Postgraduate Education, comple-mentary courses of Spanish as a Foreign Language. To enrol into these courses students must paythe corresponding fees and at the end of the courses they will get a certificate

2.9 Grading of qualifications

There is the same scale of marks awarded throughout the Spanish State. The marks range from 0to 10 points in the following way.

The regular language of instruction at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia is Spanish. In addi-tion, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, in its constant aspiration to adjust to the real needsof our society, promote international collaboration in education and meet the needs of today'sworld, has been offering a number of subjects in English during the last academic years. 3.1 Vice-Rectorate of Students Affairs and Exchange (VAI) and Office of International Exchange Programs (OPII)

One of the tasks of the Office of International Exchange Programs (OPII) is to make sure thatforeign students who are studying in the “Universidad Politécnica de Valencia” under exchangeprogrammes, do not have any problems integrating into the university community.

The services offered by this office are:Receiving students in the UPVProviding the Welcome packageOffering advice and help in looking for housingAdvising them on different cultural activities that are organisedInvolving students in activities such as sports, thus putting them in contact with other student organisations, etc.

3.2 Tutors for visiting students

A Tutor is assigned to every foreign Student, inorder to supervise his/her work and solve anyproblems that might arise during the course oftheir studies. The Tutor will periodically informthe Student's Exchange university about theStudent progress.

3.3 Orientation Sessions

The Office of International ExchangePrograms(OPII) will organise every term, befo-re classes start, one or two days of OrientationSessions for foreign students under exchangeprogrammes attending the UPV. During thesesessions, we will try to introduce the studentto the university community and will providewith information about facilities and servicesoffered within the UPV, such as sport facilities,library, cultural activities, Spanish languagecourses, etc., as well as general informationabout the city of Valencia. These OrientationSessions will take place one week before thestart of the term, for which we suggest foreignstudents to plan their arrival in Valencia for thesecond fortnight of September. The SecondTerm Orientation Sessions will take placeduring the first fortnight of February.

3.4 Accommodation

The Office of International Exchange Programs(OPII) of the UPV is in charge of helpingforeign students to find housing by means ofthe information about accommodation possi-bilities that we hand visiting students whenthey arrive and also by means of a flats DataBase which is updated every day with offers offlats to rent and share with other studentsavailable in the English version at the follo-wing web site :

There are different kinds of accommodationyou can choose from:

a) Shared flat with students

At the moment this is the most popular choi-ce because of the economical factor and thegreater independence. You can share a flateither with Spanish or foreign students.

The average price of a rented flat rangesapproximately from 100.00 to 190.00€ permonth/person, which does not include billssuch as water, gas and electricity. In any caseyou will have to pay a deposit equivalent to amonth's rent, and this is to cover possibledamage costs. Deposit is refundable on vaca-tion of the rent contract.

Students are advised to look around the flatand their bedroom before renting, and also toensure that they fully understand the terms ofthe agreement.

b) Staying with a family

Choosing to live with a Spanish family, isusually the equivalent of full board, which isthree meals a day, or half board, which is two meals a day.The monthly price is approx 450.00€ fullboard and approx 325.00€ half board.There isan additional option for washing and ironingof clothes.

c) Halls of residence (“Colegios Mayores”)

These are private halls where you can rent abedroom. There is also the option of half boardaccommodation, which includes two meals aday or full board, which includes three meals aday. For a full year the prices are approximately:

• Single bedroom, full board: 580€ / month• Double bedroom, full board 530€ / month• Single bedroom, half board: 500€ / month• Double bedroom, half board: 400€ / month.

In the case a room is rented for a week ormonth the set price will rise.

On your first visit to the UPV Campus, you willhave to go to the Oficina de ProgramasInternacionales de Intercambio (OPII)(Vicerrectorado de Alumnado enIntercambio), located by the Ágora (on thefirst level, Building 3C). In a welcome meetingyou will be provided with information aboutthe UPV, city of Valencia, accommodation, etc.You will also be provided with the applicationinformation in order to enrol (register) as aUPV Student. After your visit to our Office,you will have to go to the InternationalPrograms Office of your School or Faculty atUPV where you will fill in the form and docu-ments to get your UPV Student Card and willbe informed about how to proceed to registerin the UPV courses.

Newspaper library

The newspaper library (“Hemeroteca”) con-tains scientific and standard technologymagazines relating to the areas of knowledgedealt at the UPV. The Hemeroteca is locatedon the first floor of the Central Library. There isa computerised log of all the bibliographicalinformation available on each magazine, i.e.their listing and classification by subjects. Thiscatalogue can be obtained by typing in thetitle, words of the title, the subjects or theauthors/publishers.

4.1 Information office

The Information Office is located at the Ágora,on the groundfloor, Building 3H. You can findall sort of information there, institutional, aca-demic, tourism, etc. They can offer you infor-mation about all degrees, ways to access uni-versity, academic and cultural activities thattake place at the Campus, national and inter-national grants, courses … They daily update adatabase of flats to share or rent, halls of resi-dence and other information about accom-modation.

And last but not least, the Information Officewill take care of all lost objects found on theCampus.

4.2 Central Library

The central library is located in the building 4L.

The library contains all necessary materials forthe study of every degree course, such asbooks, maps, audio-visual equipment, etc, thatcan be taken on loan by presenting your UPVStudent Card. Also, there is free Internet con-nexion for Students, and laptop connexionsavailable.

4.6 CEDAT: Facilities for disabled people in the UPV

The UPV is aware of the need to integratepeople with physical disabilities into the uni-versity with as much ease as possible, and the-refore it has created facilities for disabled peo-ple so that they can move around as easily aspossible, for example in wheelchairs.

The CEDAT Foundation was born in the midstof the UPV due to its rectorship initiative. Thiscentre becomes a tool for disabled people whostudy and work at the university as well as forthose who are foreign to it, so that they canreceive advice and information. Furthermore,it gives rise to all kind of actions to ease thesocial and labour integration of disabled peo-ple from the Valencian Community.

4.7 Computer service

The UPV Computer Service is linked upthrough the “upvnet” network, which offers awide range of services to the university com-munity, such as E-mail, news, programmes, alink to other computers etc. The services offe-red by this network are constantly updatedand always incorporate the latest advantagesand advances in technology.

In turn, the upvnet network is connected tointernet which offers services abroad, receivingat the same time information on an internatio-nal level. In each school and faculty of the UPVthere are various computer rooms linked to thenetwork, which allow the students access to allthe upvnet and internet services.

There is a free E-mail service available to all stu-dents, allowing them to keep in touch with theircountry of origin or anyone else free of cost.

4.8 Student's union

Located on the 3rd floor of the StudentsHome (building 4K). The Student Union(Delegación de Alumnos) represents all UPVstudents and plays a leading role in promotingand carrying out university activities, as wellas defending the rights and interests of all stu-dents, collectively or individually, in matterswhich have to be put forward to the Universityauthorities.

Within the Student's Union, representativeshave been entrusted to the relationships bet-ween foreign universities, giving advice andhelp to the foreign students in need studyingin the “Universidad Politécnica de Valencia”.

4.4 Sports

The UPV promotes a full range of sports at dif-ferent levels through the Sports Area. The VeraCampus Site has excellent sport facilities suchas the indoor heated swimming pool, footballand rugby pitches, four tennis courts, two rac-ket ball courts, two squash courts, three sportsbasketball courts, five-a-side football, handballand volleyball, a gym for weight training, aero-bics, and keep fit, the martial arts of Tae Kwon-do, Aikido, Karate and Judo, a table tennisroom, etc. Access to these facilities is regula-ted by the Area de Deportes.

Throughout the academic year, individualsport tournaments are organised, such as ten-nis, table tennis, badminton, racquetball,squash, chess. Leagues are also organised bet-ween the different UPV faculties, such as foot-ball, five-a-side football, handball, volleyball,rugby, etc.

Other competitions in which the UPV takespart are the inter-university tournaments bet-ween area leagues, Spanish university cham-pionships, inter-university championships,international university championships, etc.

The Sports Club of the UPV has a mountainclub (mountaineering, trekking, abseiling,climbing) a scuba-diving club (diving lessons,diving orientation, practice trips, etc.), cycling,waterpolo, swimming clubs, etc.

4.5 The UPV doctor's surgery

On the Vera Campus Site, in the Building 6E,there is a doctor's surgery available, which isopened from Monday to Friday, from 8.00 a.m.to 8.00 p.m.There is no medical service at UPVduring week-ends. This service helps studentswith any health problems while they are on theCampus. If necessary the “Gabinete Medico”may transfer you to another health centre thatspecialises in your particular problem.

Finally, there are computers which allow youto carry out different programmes for the tea-ching of languages.

The use of the laboratory, its material and thewatching of videos is totally free for all stu-dents and UPV personnel:

The ICE offers courses and workshops for allUPV Faculty about lectures methods,investigation and education. Also, the ICEcoordinates the education system prior toenter university.

This service aims to make easier for UPV gra-duates to find a place in the labour marketonce they finish their studies. Several unitsmake up this service. 4.9 The A.E.G.E.E. Association of Valencia

Located on the 3rd floor of the StudentsHome (building 4K). This is the acronym for anassociation of young Europeans which is apo-litical, non-religious and is a non-profit makingorganisation, whose main objective is to pro-mote European co-operation and integrationwithin the university environment. They makeup part of the European AEGEE, founded in1985, which at the moment has more than15,000 members in more than 150 universitycities within the European Union.

In order to create a European awareness bet-ween the students, they organise differentactivities throughout the year to promote theknowledge of the diversity of European cultu-res, as well as awareness of European mobility.

4.11 University Ombudsman

His/her tasks include providing informationabout the rights of the members of the university community, and mediating in caseof conflicts. He/she accepts views on how the university should work and may submit formalcomplaints which have not been attended bythe relevant university authorities. He/shemay search information on issues raised byany of the academic and administrativeauthorities, and he/she may propose that theauthorities modify their resolutions, if the caseis adequately justified. He/she does not accept anonymouscomplaints and counselling is completely con-fidential.

4.12 Language laboratory

The language department of the UPV has alaboratory for teaching languages. It containsthe necessary equipment for the audio visuallearning and self-teaching of languages.

There are individual booths where studentscan follow language courses with books andcds. There is also a video library where you canfind specialised, educational videos and subti-tled films in different languages.

Foods

There are seven cafeterias on thecampus that serve food throughout the day.They are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.There is a set menu for about 3.50€, fromwhich the students can choose between a firstand second course plus a salad, bread, a drinkand a dessert. Meals vary throughout theweek, in order to provide a balanced diet, anda variety of choice.

The Green Office

Location: Building 6E next to theUPV´s doctor surgery.The Green Office is in charge of the ecologicalquality of materials used in the UPV, and thedisposal of waste produced within the UPVCampuses. Its main aim is to coordinate theimplementation of the system of environmen-tal management in the UPV according to theISO14001 norm.It also assesses UPV services, departments andschools in everything having to do with ecology and environment.

The Transport Company of theValencian Government (EMT) runs the busservice in the city. There are over 51 routesconnecting different zones. All the EMT busesare red coloured. A bus ticket costs about1.00€, which you pay as you get on. You canbuy a “Bono-bus” (Bus voucher) in tobacco-nists and newsagents, which gives you tenjourneys for about 5.05€.

The timetable can vary from route to route, butthey normally run from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.runing every 10 or 20 minutes. Also, there is anigth bus service (seven routes), available from11.00 am until 3.00 am, every 45 minutes.

Metro

The city of Valencia has a Metro net-work of five lines which connect differentparts of the city. It runs from 5:00 a.m. to11:00 p.m. Line 4 is a modern Tram, that runsby the Campus de Vera.

You can buy a single ticket at the sameStation, that costs 1.10€ if you are going totravel within the urban zone. Also you can get10 Trips Travel Cards (Bonometro) at Stations,Kiosks and Tobacconists, the price ranges from5.40 to 15.90€, depending on the zones youare going to travel to.

5.5 Cultural life

Valencia is home to numerous cultural activi-ties. You can find theatre plays of differenttypes. In the city, there are theatres such as: ElCentro Dramático de la GeneralitatValenciana, la Sala Escalante, el TeatroPrincipal, el Teatre del Micalet, el TeatroOlympia, el Teatro Talia, etc.

The “Palau de la Música” offers classical musicconcerts regularly during the year. Once ayear, the “Certamen Internacional de Bandasde Música” is held, this Festival keeps a greattradition alive all around the ValencianProvince.

5.7 Local festivities

Valencian people are outgoing, generous andlove street parties. The basic ingredients ofValencian parties and festivals are light, gun-powder, fireworks, parades, music, etc.

Fallas is our Valencian main festival. It takesplace once a year from the 12th to the 19th ofMarch. There is a rich explosion of colours,noise and gunpowder smell. Artistic monu-ments called Fallas, plenty of colours and sati-re, are all around the city. Music and peopledressed with typical costumes parade throughthe streets. Magnificent fireworks, togetherwith “Mascletás” (daytime fireworks displays)and the flowers' gift to the Virgen de losDesamparados are important events. Hot cho-colate with “buñuelos” (a typical kind of cake)are typical of this festival. On the 19th ofMarch, all the fallas are burnt, and the expe-rience is unforgettable.

The City of Arts and Sciences, 21st centuryemblem of the Valencian Community, is desig-nated as a fun a leisure space aiming toinfluence the scientific, technical, educationaland leisure, tourist, economical and commer-cial urban fields. It is a unique place in theworld to enjoy yourself with Art, Science andNature.

The City of Arts and Sciences is situated nextto the old bed of the river Turia, in the areabetween the Saler highway and the Morerasroad; with a surface of 350.000 m2. It has fourgreat areas: the Art Palace, a plurifunctionalbuilding for the development of cultural acti-vities of all kinds; L’Hemisfèric, Cinema-Planetarium with the latest technologicalsystems; the Science Museum, that will houseexhibitions of subjects related to science andleading technology; and the UniversalOceanographic Park, a big urban park withtwo aims: first, intended for promenade andrelax, and second, for leisure and fun with thediffusion of underwater principal aspects.

5.3 Beaches

In the Valencian Region there are 485 kilome-tres of coastline. Beaches of all kinds can befound from very long straight beaches tothose in small coves or inlets. The sand is fineand golden and, on some beaches you can findfine, clean gravel. All beaches have a splendidclimate and light.

In the north of the port of Valencia are thebeaches of “Levante”, “Arenas” and“Malvarosa”, the closest ones to the city, andthe easiest to get by public transport. Typicalrestaurants can be found here, where you cantaste exquisite Valencian dishes.

In the south of the city, there is the beach of“Pinedo”. About eight kilometres away is thebeach of “El Saler”, which is situated in an areaof great ecological interest, with the “Albuferalake”, extensive pine trees, and one of themost prestigious golf courses in the country.

All along the coast of Valencia you can findbeaches distinguished by the blue flag of theEuropean Union, thus showing their cleanli-ness and quality of services.

6.4 Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud (IVAJ) (ValencianInstitute for Youth People)

The IVAJ is run by the Valencian Government,it offers many services to Students, like:

• Advising and information to young peopleabout entrepreneurship, housing, employ-ment, etc.• Cultural activities• Cheap fares travel• Issuing Youth Card (under 26)• Cheap accommodation worldwide• Medical Insurance for youth people• Courses on different fields• International Programs

6.1 Health Insurance

European Students are covered by theEuropean Health Card, Form E-128, or E-111,which are issued in the country of origin.

There are other countries that are not part ofthe European Union but with which theSpanish State has a health agreement, as :Andorra, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Panama,Paraguay, Peru, Sweden, Morocco, etc. In thesecases, you will have to contact the SpanishEmbassy in order to obtain further information.

If you are not interested in the previous option(Public health System)or if you come fromanother country, you can obtain a privatehealth insurance which will cover you in Spain.The cost may vary, as it changes according tothe service obtained.

It is very important for the student to clarifyhealth insurance conditions before leaving hiscountry. The “Universidad Politécnica deValencia” will not admit students if they do notproduce their medical insurance documents.

6.2 Residence permit:Visa

The Office of International ExchangeProgrammes (OPII), at the UniversidadPolitécnica de Valencia, offers a service toregulate the stay of the Students in Spain.

If you are not from the EU or Austria,Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France,Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein,Luxembourg, Norway, The Netherlands,Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden,Switzerland, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia,Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta,Poland or Czech Republic, you must obtain aStudent Visa at the Spanish Embassy orConsulate placed in your country before trave-lling to Spain.And once you arrive in Spain anddepending on the kind on visa you have,within 30 days period from your entry in Spainor in a Schengen country, you must regularizeyour condition, applying for the Student'sResidence Permit.

6.7 Electricity

In Spain, electricity is distributed, by means ofalternating current (AC), with a voltage of 220volts and a frequency of 50 Hz.

6.8 Telephone calls

There are public phone boxes around the cityand in the “Universidad Politécnica deValencia” which you can use with phone-cardor coins. Phone-cards can be bought in thetobacconist's (estancos).

There is a national information number whichis 11818 and another for international infor-mation that is 11825.

For international calls from Spain you willhave to dial the following codes :

• 00 (access to the international exchange :gives a higher tone)

• The code of the country you are phoning• Local code• The phone number you want to call

If you want to ring to Spain while abroad theinternational code is 34.

Reverse-charged calls are also possible. Thereare two ways of making this type of call :

1. Phoning directly to the operator of thecountry where you want to phone.

2. Phoning to the Spanish operator and ask forthe reverse-charged call. This service is acces-sible dialling the 1009.

You can reduce the price of your phone callsby phoning between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

6.5 Money

Spain is member of the European Monetary Union and its currency is the Euro (€).

Banks

Banks are usually opened in the morning, from Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 2.30pm. During Summer time (July and August) they are opened from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm, fromMonday to Friday. On Vera Campus there are 3 banks located at the Ágora, and another one inthe Building 6B, where you can change foreign currency.
