Syed Ahmad JAMAL Director , National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur
With a rich he ritage in the visual arts in the ASEAN regio n the re is need for awareness and understanding of the arts wh ich a re traditional, as well as contemporary artistic manifestat ion. It was realised that this can be achieved by means of a gathe ring of a rtists and art experts from the ASEAN countries.
The project was based on the proposal by Malaysia for an ASEAN Art Collect ion and Tha iland's proposal for a Forum on Aesthetics and Workshop in Visual Arts.
The pro ject was intended to enhance the recognition of ident ity in aesthetics in visual art related to the role of art ists, educators, writers, critics and the art public ; and to share creative experience among artists from the ASEAN region.
It serves as cultural documentation of paintings and pri nts re lated to ar t works by ASEAN artists , forming a bas is for an ASEAN Art Collection in each of the membe r countries .
Persuant to the decision made at the Twentieth Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Informat ion in Bangkok , Tha iland on 19-22 June 1989, the Preparatory Meeting of Experts pro posed that the First ASEAN Symposium on Aesthet ics , Workshop and Exhibition be convened in Kuala Lumpur on 8-10 August 1989.

workshop.
It is hoped the symposium and workshop will continue to develop into a series of similar activities which will help to enhance awareness and understanding of visual art in ASEAN countries at all levels from the layman to the highest academic level.
This gathering of experts , with exchange of ideas will further
enrich documentation of information , data and views on the visual
art heritage, the state of contemporary expression , and strategies taken in the development of visual art in ASEAN countries. The
publication of papers , journal and books will enrich literature on
the study of ASEAN art. The ASEAN Art Collection should provide awareness of the
dynamic creativity by ASEAN artists. The display of plastic visual manifestations reflect the natural abundance , climatic environment, history , cu lture, faith , philosophy , and influences-expressed
through a rich tapestry of form , pattern , line, texture , colour
symbolising tradition as the roots of inspiration .
