We can pass through the valleys of the Facinilla, Ma-riano, Roque, and Huerto Gorges, as well as the Fo-rest of the Saladavieja Stream before arriving to therecreational area Los Tornos.Leave Facinas direction ‘las Cabrerizas,’ and conti-nue ascending the slope, passing the last house ofthe town after 1,5km of the route. Take the foresttrail which goes to the East from a curve in theascending path, just after crossing an opening tothe Facinilla Gorge.

La práctica totalidad de nuestras amplísimas playas de finísima y blancaarena se encuentra protegida por el Parque Natural del Estrecho, quevalora su riqueza y conservación en tierra y también bajo el mar.El Parque de los Alcornocales constituye el último ejemplo de bosquemediterráneo que se conserva en toda Europa, y en él sorprenden los“canutos”, profundos y estrechos valles excavados por los riachuelos ycubiertos por la vegetación, así como las especies subtropicales que enél han encontrado refugio.También sus dos grandes dunas, coronando las playas de Bolonia y Val-devaqueros, destacan por su amplitud y altura que les ha valido la con-sideración de monumentos naturales.Tarifa constituye un lugar privilegiado para la observación de los movi-mientos migratorios tanto de aves como de mamíferos marinos, propor-cionando un espectáculo natural poco corriente.

The majesty of the Tarifan landscape is the first pleasant surprise to greetits visitors. The presence of Africa lends a magical touch to the horizonand confirms that this is a land of contrasts. Her variety and fullness havegiven cause to two Natural Parks.The entirety of Tarifa’s wide-reaching beaches of fine, white sand is pro-tected by the Natural Park of the Strait of Gibraltar, which appraisesthe natural wealth and conservation on land as well as under water. TheAlcornocales Park represents the last example of the Mediterranean forestin all of Europe. Within these forests we find “canutos”; profound and na-rrow valleys carved by streams and covered in vegetation, within whichhide subtropical species which have found their refuge there. The two greatsand dunes, in the beaches of Bolonia and Valdevaqueros, stand out aswell for their expanse and height, which have granted them status as na-tural monuments. Tarifa provides a privileged place for the observation ofmigratory movements of birds as well as marine mammals, offering anunusual and unique spectacle.

Se contempla el paso por los canutos de las gargantas de Facinilla, Ma-riano, Roque y el Huerto, así como la contemplación del Bosque de ga-lería del Arroyo de Saladavieja antes de llegar al área recreativa LosTornos.Abandonamos Facinas camino a las Cabrerizas, siempre en sentido as-cendente, dejando atrás tras 1,5 de recorrido, la última casa de dichonúcleo disperso. Tomamos el camino forestal que parte hacia el estedesde la cerrada curva del camino ascendente cruzándose, poco despuésde la Garganta de la Facinilla, un portillo.Tras pasar el segundo portillo, el camino discurre por un cortafuegos,dirigiéndose en adelante al sur, hacia la garganta de Mariano. La erosiónantrópica redunda en el estado de conservación de este canuto, si bienexiste una importante población de rododendros.La vereda asciende levemente durante unos cien metros, tras los cualesel camino prosigue en un leve descenso con amplias vistas hacia el este,hasta llegar al Canuto de Roque. En él volvemos a encontrarnos con va-rios madroños. Una vez cruzado el pequeño cauce se desciende hacia elRancho Roque, en ruinas, situado en el margen derecho del cortafuegos,por el que habremos de andar. Desde dicho lugar, nos dirigimos por unavereda hasta la Garganta del Huerto, pasada la cual tomamos la veredaque se dirige al este, bordeándolo, que comunica con un camino forestalondulante, que desemboca en la Casa del Vilano.Desde el límite inferior de la Casa del Vilano, continuamos hacia el este,hasta alcanzar la CA-2213, cruzada la cual nos dirigimos hacia el caucedel Arroyo de Saladavieja. El cauce aparece bordeado por un espeso bos-que de galería formado por adelfas, álamos y alisos. En el bosque de ga-lería es posible ver, con paciencia o suerte, algún ejemplar del escurridizoMartín Pescador.Retornamos a la comarca CA-2213 y nos dirigimos al Área Recreativa LosTornos, la cual cuenta con una zona lúdica infantil además de ser unentorno ideal para pasar un buen día con familiares y amigos enplena naturaleza.Para más información acerca del parque consulte su web www.alcornocales.org

CN 340 direction Tarifa-Algeciras, at km 95. We can see a detour tothe right of the recreational area el Bujeo.The path leaves from the recreational area el Bujeo. After a sign indica-ting the beginning of the trail, we go up a well-marked forest paththrough a zone in the Bujeo. The ravines allow us magnificent views ofthe surrounding hills. We continue up until we arrive at the second signindicating the trail’s start (before the bridge) which tunnels us into thevalley of this magnificent river. From there we begin to descend. We finda flower typical to tropic jungles, numerous species of ferns, alders, gall-oaks… we then continue on the trail close to the river (always on herleft side.)Following the trail takes us further from the river until we arrive at anincredible panoramic view of the valley and her flora. On clear days, thereare magnificent views of the ocean and the Guadalmesí tower in themouth of the river. A bi-directional sign indicates the rise of a forestpath, to the left, which takes us to the beginning of the valley. Once onthe path, we take a right to return to the start of the trail.

CN 340 dirección Tarifa- Algeciras, a la altura del km 95. Nos encontra-mos un desvío a la derecha en el área recreativa el Bujeo. El senderoparte del área recreativa el Bujeo. A partir de una señal de inicio desendero, ascendemos por una pista forestal perfectamente marcada através de una zona de Bujeo. Algunos barrancos nos permiten disfrutarde magníficas vistas de la sierra. Siempre en ascenso hasta llegar a lasegunda señal de inicio de sendero (antes del puente) que nos adentraen el canuto de este magnífico río. A partir de aquí comenzamos la ba-jada. Nos encontramos con una flora típica de selva tropical, numerosasespecies de helechos, alisos, quejigos... Continuamos el sendero cercanoal río (siempre por su margen izquierda).Siguiendo el sendero nos vamos alejando del río hasta llegar a teneruna excelente panorámica del canuto. Podemos ver la vegetación típicade este tipo de formación. En días claros, hay unas magníficas vistasdel mar y de la torre Guadalmesí, allá en la desembocadura de este río.Una baliza bidireccional nos indicará la subida, hacia la izquierda, a lapista forestal que nos llevó al comienzo del canuto. Una vez en la pista,

tomamos hacia la derecha para volver al inicio del sendero.

This trail begins in the Cove of Bolonia, Tarifa, and ends in the sand dune of Bolonia.The route meanders through the beach of Bolonia, on a wooden footpath from which the dune of Bolonia is seen. Thepath goes through the Baelo Claudia archaeological site towards the sand dune. The left of the trail is bordered by thetypical lagoons of the beaches of Tarifa. These ponds protect an important avifauna including Turnstones, Sandpipers,Redshanks and gulls.The trail continues into the pines, at the feet of the Bolonia Dune. The path leaves the pine forest to open again onthe beach, where we find the end of the trail. From here, we can visit the majestic dune...

El sendero tiene su inicio en la Ensenada de Bolonia, Tarifa y finaliza en la Duna de Bolonia.El Itinerario discurre por la Playa de Bolonia, sobre una pasarela de madera desde la que se divisa la duna de Bolonia,hacia la que se encamina, pasando por el conjunto Arqueológico de Baelo Claudia. A la izquierda del sendero sebordean los lagoons típicos de las Playas de Tarifa. En estas charcas se encuentra una importante avifauna entre lasque destacan los vuelvepiedras. Correlimos, archibebes y gaviotas.El sendero continua adentrándose en el pinar, hasta a los pies de la Duna de Bolonia. La vereda deja el pinar para

abrirse de nuevo en la playa, donde se encuentra el final del paseo. Desde aquí, las vistas de la duna resultanimpresionantes...

Duna de Bolonia

Para acceder al sendero deberá llegar a la urbanización Punta Carnero, a través de la carretera CA-224, que partedel k.102 de la N- 340. El inicio se encuentra cerca del antiguo cuartel de carabineros, tomando la primera calle amano izquierda de la urbanización y recorriendo unos 900m. Recorrerá una de las zonas litorales más impresionantesde la costa andaluza. Surgentes formaciones geológicas acompañan al sendero, como las plataformas de abrasión,o la erosión provocada por el viento en la arenisca. La historia de este tramo litoral está salpicada de la continua

relación del hombre con el mar. En definitiva, un lugar único lleno de riqueza, tanto natural, paisajística cómocultural que merece la pena conocer y conservar.

You can access the path from the Urbanization Punta Carnero, via the highway CA-224, which exits at k.102 ofthe N - 340. The starting point is located close to the old police barracks, taking the first street on the left side of

the urbanization and continuing for about 900 m. This trail will take you through one of the most impressive coastalareas of the Andalusian coast. Geological formations accompany the path, such as abrasion platforms and erosioncaused by wind on the sandstone. The history of this coastal stretch is punctuated with man’s continuous relationshipto the sea.In short, this is a unique place full of natural, scenic, and cultural richness, well worth seeing and conserving.

SENDEROS DEL PARQUE NATURAL DEL ESTRECHOTRAILS IN THE NATURAL PARK OF THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR

Para este sendero existen dos posibilidades de inicio. La primera, desde el mismo aparcamiento acondicionado juntoa las ruinas de Baelo Claudia. La segunda desde el Faro Camarinal, al que se puede llegar desde Zahara de los Atunesentrando por la urbanización Atlanterra.El Faro Camarinal, sobre el Cabo de Gracia, es el punto final del sendero, y un lugar privilegiado para apreciar lasvistas del Estrecho, y las costas de Tarifa y Zahara de los Atunes. En el ascenso, desde Bolonia, atravesará pinares

y eucaliptales sobre arenas estabilizadas y bujeos arcillosos; diversidad de paisajes y con la presencia constantedel patrimonio histórico-cultural, como el complejo de Baelo Claudia.

This trail has two possible starting points. The first is from the parking lot next to the ruins of Baelo Claudia.The second is from the Camarinal lighthouse, which is reachable from Zahara de los Atunes by entering the urba-nization Atlanterra.The Camarinal Lighthouse, on the Cape of Gracia, is the end point of the trail, and a privileged place to appreciatethe views of the Strait and the coast of Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes. Ascending from Bolonia, the trail passesthrough pine and eucalyptus forests on stabilized sand and clay; offering diverse landscapes and the constant pre-sence of cultural and historical heritage, such as the complex of Baelo Claudia.

3 Bolonia · Faro Camarinal

After passing the second opening,the trail continues along a firewallpath, in a Southern direction, to-wards the Mariano Gorge. The anth-ropic erosion results in the state ofconservation of this valley, andcauses the important population ofrhododendrons seen here.The lane ascends slightly for about100 metres, after which the pathcontinues in a slight descend withextensive views to the East, untilthe Roque Valley. In this valley, wefind several examples of ArbutusTrees. Once we cross the smallchannel, we descend towards theRoque Ranch, in ruins, situated inthe right side of the firewall path,which we now follow. From thisplace, we follow a path to theHuerto Gorge. After passing theHuerto Gorge, we take a path to theEast, bordering the Gorge, whichconnects to an undulating forestpath which arrives at the Casa delVilano (Vilano House).From the lower limits of the Houseof Vilano, we continue eastward,reaching the CA-2213, after whichwe head towards the bed of thestream of Saladavieja. The channelis bordered by a thick forest formedby Oleanders, Poplars and Aldertrees. In this forest it is possible tosee, with patience or luck, signs ofthe elusive Kingfisher bird.We return to the regional CA-2213and continue to the RcreationalArea ‘Los Tornos,’ which offers a funplayground as well as being anideal environment for a good daywith friends and family in thecountryside.For more information concerningthe Park, please see:www.alcornocales.org 5

The trail begins at the end of the center of El Lentiscal, in Bolonia and finishes at thecore of Paloma Baja (lower Paloma). The path follows an old livestock trail from whichit inherits its name, making a botanically-rich route that runs through pine forests withpatches of coastal junipers. In the last stretch of the trail we approach the remains ofan ancient Roman aqueduct, finally ending the route in the rural core of Paloma Baja.

Tiene su inicio al final del núcleo de El Lentiscal, en Bolonia y finaliza en el Núcleo de Paloma Baja.El sendero de la Colada de la Reginosa aprovecha la vía pecuaria de la que hereda el nombre, para abrir paso a un

itinerario que discurre por pinares-sabinares con manchas de enebros costeros, de gran valor paisajístico y bo-tánico. En el último tramo del sendero podemos acercarnos hasta los restos de piedras de

acueducto romano, para finalizar el recorrido en el núcleo rural de Paloma Baja.

En el punto de información del Parque Natural del Estrecho, carreteraN-340, Km 77,5.A través de una subida de pequeña pendiente entre pinares, llegaremosal mirador de la Peña, desde donde podremos disfrutar de unas vistasimpresionantes: Punta Paloma, ensenada de Valdevaqueros, Los Lances,incluso el Atlas del continente africano, en días claros. Sobre este pro-montorio rocoso se ubica la torre vigía más antigua de la zona, la Torrede la Peña, al parecer de origen islámico (siglo XIII), construida paracontrolar el acceso terrestre a Tarifa desde poniente, muestra de un

pasado lleno de historia.

Start and Finish of the Trail: in the Information Point of the NaturalPark of the Strait, on Highway N-340, km 77,5.Route: Ascending a slight slope among pine forests, we reach the lookout‘Mirador de la Peña,’ from which we can enjoy stunning views: Punta Pa-loma, Valdevaqueros cove, Los Lances, and on clear days, the outline ofthe African continent. The oldest lookout tower of the area, La Torre dela Peña, is located on this rocky promontory. Of Islamic origin (13th cen-tury), this tower was built to control land access to Tarifa from the west,and is an example of the rich history behind this area.

Existen dos opciones de inicio. En el núcleo poblacional de Tarifa, enlas proximidades del campo de fútbol, o en la zona conocida El Pozuelo,en la carretera N-340, km 82. Este sendero a modo de pasarela de madera en todo su recorrido, estáespecialmente adaptado a personas con discapacidad. Un apacible paseopor el humedal de la playa de Los Lances, donde aves límicolas como

charranes y charrancitos, chorlitejos, correlimos, vuelvepiedras y ar-chibebes, son los máximos protagonistas del espacio.

There are two options to start the trail : in the town area of Tarifa,close to the football field, or in the area ‘El Pozuelo’, on road N-340,km 82.This walk, being entirely on an easy wooden path, is especially accessiblefor people with disabilities. A gentle stroll through the wetlands of theBeach Los Lances, where birds such as Terns and little Plovers, Sandpipers,Turnstones, and Redshanks, are the protagonists of this beautiful naturalspace.

Tiene su inicio en Tarifa, pasando el castillo de Sancho IV o Guzmán ElBueno, en las inmediaciones del puerto marítimo y finaliza en la Torrede Guadalmesí.El sendero aprovecha una vía pecuaria costera y atraviesa los acantiladosdel frente litoral de Tarifa hacia Algeciras. El recorrido centra su interésen las impresionantes vistas del continente africano a lo largo de sus 8kilómetros, los acantilados y las plataformas de abrasión en las zonasintermareales. A lo largo del mismo es frecuente encontrar bunkers, an-tiguos cuarteles de la guardia civil y otras construcciones de vigilanciay defensa, que aumentan la intriga del itinerario. Al final del sendero,a la altura de la antigua Torre vigía de Guadalmesí, el observatorio del

mismo nombre, nos invita a contemplar el vuelo de las avesque cruzan en el Estrecho hacia el continente hermano.

The route begins in Tarifa, passing the Castle of Sancho IVor Guzman el Bueno, close to the sea Port, and ends at the

Tower of Guadalmesí.The trail uses a coastal livestock path and passes through the cliffsof the coastal front of Tarifa towards Algeciras. The route boastsimpressive views of the African continent throughout its 8 kilo-meters, through cliffs and abrasion platforms in intertidal zones.Throughout the route you can find bunkers, former civil guardbarracks and other old buildings built for surveillance and de-fense, which increase the intrigue of the route. At the end of thetrail, at the height of the ancient Guadalmesí watch tower, weare invited to contemplate the flight of birds that cross the Straittowards the brother continent...

Tiene su inicio en el Puerto de Bolonia, carretera CA-8202, que une la carre-tera N-340 con el núcleo de Bolonia, en el punto kilométrico 71 y finalizaen el Núcleo rural de El Pulido.El sendero discurre en su primer tramo por una vía pecuaria, los pastizalesde las zonas altas de la sierra de la Plata y la Sierra de la Higuera. Abundaen esta zona el ganado vacuno y las construcciones rurales con valor etno-gráfico. El segundo tramo de este sendero discurre por el pie de la Laja dela Zarga o de Las Algas. Atravesaremos bosques de acebuche y encina degran interés, donde se encuentra el observatorio de una importante coloniade buitres leonados. El tercer tramo atraviesa los acebuchales de las zonasmedias de la sierra de La Plata, donde también aparece un abundante y va-riado sotobosque. El sendero se encuentra en fase de mejora. This trail begins in the Port of Bolonia, at kilometre point 71 on highwayCA-8202, (which connects the road N-340 with the heart of Bolonia) , andends at the rural center of El Pulido.The first part of the trail follows a livestock path through high pastures of theSierra del Plata and the Sierra de la Higuera. Cattle and the interesting ruralbuildings abound in this area. The second section of this trail passes the footof the rocky area ‘la Laja en Zarga’ and by ‘Las Algas.’ The trail continuesthrough beautiful Acebuche and Holm Oak forests, which also house an im-portant Vulture Colony Observatory. The third section passes through the mid-dle of the sierra de La Plata, where you can see an abundant and variedundergrowth. Tiene su inicio en la Necrópolis de los Algarbes, carretera A-2325 que une lacarretera N-340 con el núcleo de Punta Paloma o Paloma Baja, en el puntokilométrico 74 y finaliza en la Carretera Ca-2216, por la que se accede alinicio del sendero.Emprendiendo la marcha en la Necrópolis de los Algarbes, uno de los com-plejos arqueológicos más importantes de la provincia de Cádiz, comienza lasubida al núcleo rural de Betijuelo, donde se encuentra el segundo aparca-miento del sendero y comienza el segundo tramo del paseo. Caminando entrelas viviendas rurales de Betijuelo, el itinerario sube hasta el punto más altodel recorrido, donde se encuentra un vértice geodésico en el que se disfrutande unas impresionantes vistas panorámicas. Al reanudar la marcha se des-ciende por la rambla del Arroyo Puerco. En tan sólo unos pocos metros, elpaseo finaliza tras pasar la Casa Forestal. El regreso hasta el aparcamientode los Algarbes puede hacerlo por la carretera A-2325 o bien dando un

paseo por la playa de Valdevaqueros.

The path begins in the necropolis of the Algarbes, road A.-2325, whichlinks the N-340 road with the center of Punta Paloma. It startsat kilometre point 74 and ends at the highwayCa-2216, from which you can also reach the be-ginning of the path.Nestled in the necropolis of the Algarbes, oneof the most important archaeological areas ofthe Cádiz province, the trail ascends to therural core of Betijuelo, where we find the se-cond parking for the trail and the second sec-tion of the route begins. Walking among therural houses of Betijuelo, the path rises tothe highest point of the route, from whichwe can enjoy stunning panoramic views.Once upon the trail again, we descend bythe Arroyo Puerco (Puerco Stream). Aftera few meters, the walk ends after passingthe Forestry House. You can then returnto the Algarbes car park onroad A-2325 or by taking awalk along the beach of Val-devaqueros.

Como una gran nave al sur de España, Gibraltar es una mezcla de curiosidadesy atracciones fascinantes. A pesar de los bobbies ingleses, los buzones rojosde correos y otros recordatorios de la Inglaterra de los sesenta, Gibraltar esen realidad un cóctel cultural de genoveses, malteses, españoles, norafrica-nos y otros elementos que lo han hecho fantásticamente próspero.

Esta Roca de tan sólo 426 metros de altura nunca ha dejado de ser el centro deatención y a pesar de su tamaño pequeño, siempre ha tenido un papel de granimportancia en la historia europea. Para los antiguos griegos y romanos, estePeñón era una de las dos columnas de Hércules, siendo la otra el Monte Musaen Marruecos. Las dos grandes rocas marcaron el fin del Mundo Antiguo. Losnavegantes, llegando hasta aquí, se pararon y observaron el horizonte del Atlán-tico sin atreverse a cruzar el estrecho. Según ellos la tierra era plana y pensabanque saliendo al océano se habrían caído de la tierra. En la punta occidental deEuropa, la ubicación privilegiada de Gibraltar y su naturaleza única nunca handejado de atraer la mirada codiciosa de estrategas militares y grandes conquis-tadores. Desde el primer hombre de Neandertal, a través de los griegos, romanosy visigodos, hasta el día de hoy, la posesión de este terreno de tan sólo 6 km2,siempre ha sido causa de discusiones, guerras y batallas.

Naturalmente, la principal atracción es la Roca imponente, una gran crestade piedra caliza con acantilados en sus ambos lados. La parte superior dela Roca es una reserva natural con vistas alucinantes a la costa africana ycon varios lugares que merecen la pena de ser visitados, sin olvidarnos delcomplejo sistema de túneles que llena el interior del Peñón. Un día exce-lente para el visitante incluye la exploración del mundo natural de la Roca,la Cueva de San Miguel, los Jardínes Alameda o la Punta de Europa, las ins-talaciones militares como los Túneles de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, elCañón de Cien Toneladas o los Túneles del Gran Asedio, y el casco antiguo,la Calle Principal, la Plaza Casamata o el Barrio Irlandés. Sería una pena lavisita sin conocer el Gibraltar moderno, ir de compras al vanguardista com-plejo de Ocean Village o tomarse una caña en el lujo de Queensway QuayMarina, tan sólo a pocos minutos del bullicio del centro.

Looming like some great ship off southern Spain, Gibraltar is a fascinatingcompound of curiosities and attractions. Despite bobbies on the beat, redpost boxes and other reminders of 1960s England, Gibraltar is actually acultural cocktail with Genoese, Spanish, North African and other elementswhich have made it fantastically prosperous.

This 426 metre high rock, despite its small size, has always played a keyrole in history. For the ancient Greeks and Romans this was one of the twoPillars of Hercules, split from the other, Jebel Musa in Morocco. These twogreat rocks marked the edge of the Ancient World. Greek and Roman shipsthat sailed out of the Mediterranean, stopped here and looking at the At-lantic's horizon, they feared they would fall off the edge of the world, asin those days, the earth was thought to be flat. At the Western end of Eu-rope, Gibraltar’s location and highly defensible nature have attracted thecovetous gaze of military strategists and famous conquistadors ever since.From the very first Neanderthal man, through the Greeks, the Romans andthe Visigoths, people have never stopped discussing the ownership of the6 square km rock.

Naturally, the main sight is the awesome rock; a vast limestone ridge withsheer cliffs on both its northern and eastern sides. Most of the Upper Rock,starting just above the town, is a nature reserve with spectacular viewsand several interesting spots to visit, meanwhile its interior hides a com-plex tunnel system.

Gibraltar’s terrific agenda for visitors includes exploring its natural worldsuch as the Upper Rock, St. Michael’s Cave, Alameda Botanic Garden andEuropa Point, its military installations like World War II Tunnels, 100 TonGun or Great Siege Tunnels, and its quirky town with the famous MainStreet, Casemates Square or Irish Town. Well worth a visit the modernGibraltar called Ocean Village or the luxury and exclusive Queensway QuayMarina just a few minutes off the busy town centre.

Las Columnasde HérculesFueron un elemento legendario de origen mitoló-gico, situado en el estrecho de Gibraltar y señalabael límite del mundo conocido, la última fronterapara los antiguos navegantes del Mediterráneo. Losgriegos conocían bien el Mediterráneo aunquedadas las considerables distancias, sus conocimien-tos sobre lo que se extendía en el océano Atlánticoera más limitado, dando lugar así a leyendas y te-mores. Bajo el lema «Non Terrae Plus Ultra» los ro-manos asignaban el confín del continente, que sibien se asoció a Finisterre, también simbolizaba elestrecho de Gibraltar.El nombre original fue acuñado por los fenicios:«Columnas de Melkart», más tarde los griegos lasdenominaron «Columnas de Heracles» hasta su ac-tual nombre romano.La columna norte (antiguo Kalpe o «Calpe») esidentificada con el peñón de Gibraltar (426 m), laidentidad de la columna sur (antigua «Abila») hasido disputada a través de la historia, siendo losdos candidatos más probables el Monte Hacho(204 m), en Ceuta y el Monte Musa (851 m) en Ma-rruecos.

El viaje de ida,antes de llegar a Eriteia (una de las antiguas islassobre las que actualmente se asienta la ciudad deSan Fernando) fue pródigo en aventuras y luchas detodo tipo, hasta el extremo que "para conmemorarsus hazañas fueron elevadas las columnas que lle-van su nombre, que separan Europa de África.Heracles tomó prestada la Copa de Helios para na-vegar sobre el océano y llegar a la tierra de Gerión.Mató a éste y regresó al reino de Euristeo con el ga-nado. Pillars of Hercules

The Pillars of Hercules was the phrase that wasapplied in Antiquity to the promontories thatflank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Thenorthern Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar in theBritish overseas territory of Gibraltar. A corre-sponding North African peak not being predomi-nant, the identity of the southern Pillar has beendisputed through history, with the two mostlikely candidates being Monte Hacho in Ceutaand Jebel Musa in Morocco.

NamingAccording to Greek mythology adopted by the Etr-uscans and Romans, when Hercules had to per-form twelve labours, one of them was to fetch theCattle of Geryon of the far West and bring themto Eurystheus; this marked the westward extentof his travels. A lost passage of Pindar quoted byStrabo was the earliest traceable reference in thiscontext: "the pillars which Pindar calls the 'gatesof Gades' when he asserts that they are the far-thermost limits reached by Heracles."According to Plato's account, the lost realm of At-lantis was situated beyond the Pillars of Hercules,in effect placing it in the realm of the Unknown.Renaissance tradition says the pillars bore thewarning Nec plus ultra (also Non plus ultra,"nothing further beyond"), serving as a warningto sailors and navigators to go no further.According to some Roman sources, while on hisway to the island of Erytheia Hercules had tocross the mountain that was once Atlas. Insteadof climbing the great mountain, Hercules usedhis superhuman strength to smash through it. Bydoing so, he connected the Atlantic Ocean to theMediterranean Sea and formed the Strait ofGibraltar. One part of the split mountain isGibraltar and the other is either Monte Hacho orJebel Musa. These two mountains taken togetherhave since then been known as the Pillars of Her-cules, though other natural features have beenassociated with the name. Diodorus Siculus, how-ever, held that instead of smashing through anisthmus to create the Straits of Gibraltar, Her-cules instead narrowed an already existing straitto prevent monsters from the Atlantic Ocean fromentering the Mediterranean Sea.

Precisamente el atún rojo es el objetivo pesqueroprincipal de la flota artesanal que faena en aguasdel Estrecho de Gibraltar, así como de las Almadra-bas de Tarifa, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes y Barbate.Las técnicas utilizadas por los pesqueros artesana-les son la Almadraba, un laberinto de redes que ca-nalizan al atún hacia el interior de dicho laberinto,denominado el “copo”, donde los atunes son cap-turados; y el palangre de fondo que consiste en unatransa principal unida a una piedra que permite lacaída y la ubicación del arte en el fondo.

De las 5 manadas de orca, 2 se observan interac-cionando con la pesca de la Almadraba, fundamen-talmente en las zonas de Barbate, Conil y Zaharade los Atunes. La estrategia de caza en esta zonaes la persecución de la presa hasta que ésta quedaexhausta y pueden darle alcance. En ocasiones elatún, en su huida, se aproxima a costa y es cana-lizado hacia el interior de la Almadraba. Las otras 3 manadas se observan interaccionandocon la pesquería del palangre en una zona deno-minada “las Bajas”, una cordillera submarina quereduce la profundidad de forma muy notable y quepor tanto supone el lugar más adecuado para lascapturas de atún rojo, tanto por parte de la flotapesquera como de las manadas de orca. Las inter-acciones, en este caso, se producen de forma másintensa. Las orcas esperan a que las embarcacionesde pesca tengan una captura en sus artes paraaproximarse y, antes de que los pescadores puedansubir el atún a cubierta, arrebatar a la presa, deforma que los pescadores, en los mejores casos,sólo pueden ascender parte de dicha captura. Las pérdidas en las pesquerías debido a esta inter-acción ascienden al 17%, en cambio las orcas se

benefician de esta interacción de modo que elahorro en costes energéticos para capturar a lapresa lo invierten en un mayor crecimiento y enreducir sus intervalos de reproducción. No sólo afecta a la flota artesanal española, sinoque la afección se extiende a las pequeñas embar-caciones de marroquíes, cuyas capturas en ocasio-nes igualan o superan al tamaño de estospequeños barcos, por lo que tienen que arrastrara las presas en los laterales de la embarcación ariesgo de que la orca, como en alguna ocasión hasucedido, les arrebate el atún, escena que recuerdaa la relatada por Ernest Hemingway en “el viejo yel mar”. No obstante, la reducción de los stocks de atúnrojo amenaza sobremanera la supervivencia de laorca en el Estrecho de Gibraltar.

The Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) is the biggest repre-sentative of the Delphinid family. It can reach a sizeof 9 meters and a weight of about 9 tons. In theStrait of Gibraltar there are 40 Killer Whales dividedin 5 pods. The main prey of the Killer Whale is theBluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus), which migrates du-ring the end of winter and spring to the Mediterra-nean sea for spawning and return to the Atlanticocean in summer to start the migratory routes again. The Bluefin Tuna is the main aim of artisanal fishingfleets that work in the waters of the Strait of Gibral-tar, as well as the Almadrabas of Tarifa, Conil, Zaharade los Atunes and Barbate. The technique used byartisanal fishing is the Almadraba, a labyrinth of netsthat channel the Bluefin Tuna towards the inside ofthe trap, a space called a “copo”, where the fish iscaptured, and the bottom longline which consists of

a fishing line unit with a stone that allows the netto fall and position the longline along the bottom. 2 of 5 pods of Killer Whales can be observed interac-ting with the Almadraba, mainly in Barbate, Coniland Zahara de los Atunes. The hunt strategy in thiszone is to chase the prey until it is exhausted andthen attack it. Sometimes, when the Bluefin Tuna ison the run, it approaches the coast and gets chan-neled towards the Almadraba. The other three pods can be observed interactingwith the bottom longline in a zone called “lasBajas”, an underwater mountain range which noti-ceably lessen the depth of the water in this area, ma-king it the easiest place for both fishermen and KillerWhales to capture Bluefin Tuna. This situation thenprovokes a series of very intense interactions. The ki-ller whales wait until the fishermen have captured

the prey to practically steal it out of their hands. Thefishermen, if lucky, only get a part of the catch.Losses in fisheries due to this interaction amount to17%, however killer whales benefit from this inter-action because they save energy capturing the prey,and invert this energy in growth and reduce intervalsof reproduction. This situation affects the small Moroccan boats too,whose prey are similar or bigger than the boats, the-refore they have to drag the prey tied up on the sideof the boat, despite the risk that Killer Whale, as hashappened, steal the Bluefin Tuna, a scene that is re-counted by Ernest Hemingway in The Old Man andThe Sea. However, the reduction of bluefin tuna stocks, is con-sidered an important threat for the survival of killerwhale in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Cada año desde el inicio de la primavera hasta agosto, atunes que puedenalcanzar 3 metros y 700 kg pasan cerca de la costa del Estrecho de Gibral-tar buscando en el Mediterráneo un lugar para desovar. El atún puede vivirhasta 35 años siendo capaz de reproducirse una vez que alcanza entre loscinco y ocho años de edad. A pesar de la presencia de Almadrabas, o trampas de redes, su itinerariono ha cambiado desde hace miles de años.Aunque la procedencia de la palabra Almadraba sea árabe, significa lugardonde se golpea o lucha, su origen es incluso anterior, pues ya los romanoslas empleaban para la pesca del atún en estas aguas. Quedan como testi-monio de ello las ruinas de Baelo Claudia en la playa de Bolonia del sigloII a.C cuando la pesca, la industria de salazón y el Garúm (salsa derivadadel mismo) eran las principales fuentes de riqueza del lugar.Las únicas Almadrabas históricas que perduran en España son las de Bar-bate, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes y Tarifa, donde cada primavera se pre-paran para la llegada de los atunes. Todo el proceso, desde la pesca, hastala elaboración de la conserva se realiza en estas localidades, especialmenteen Barbate.Este arte de pesca, ha constituido desde la antigüedad y hasta hoy en díael medio de vida de muchos pobladores de la costa del Estrecho de Gibral-tar. Por diversos motivos las capturas han disminuido en los últimos años,quedando en el recuerdo el récord de 1949 con 43.500 ejemplares.Las causas principales del descenso en la población de atunes son la cap-tura por parte de barcos atuneros y la pesca durante la temporada de de-recho, justo antes de que se efectúe la puesta y fecundación de los huevosque impide la regeneración de la especie. En el Mediterráneo, la mayor parte de las capturas se lleva a cabo con redesde cerco, y su destino son las granjas de engorde. Estas suministran atúnrojo a los mercados asiáticos, fundamentalmente Japón, para el consumodel producto crudo. Casi todas las granjas se concentran en el Mediterráneocentral. A pesar de las cuotas de pesca existentes, las reservas de atún rojo,un pez muy valorado por los amantes del sushi han disminuido hasta enun 90% en el Mar Mediterráneo y el Atlántico occidental desde 1970.

Every year from March until August, tuna that can reach up to 3 metres inlength and 700 kilo in weight pass near the shore through the Straits ofGibraltar to spawning grounds in the Mediterranean. Tuna can live for up to35 years and start reproducing upon reaching maturity between the ages of5 and 8 years of age. Tuna are caught by the traditional method known asAlmadraba. This has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.Although the origins of the word Almadraba is Arabic, meaning site of abattle, its source is much earlier as Romans used the same techniques for

fishing tuna in these same waters. The second centuryRoman ruins of Baélo Claudio at Bolonia are a good exam-

ple of a centre developed to exploit the extensive fishing andproduction of Garum – a flavouring derived from fermented fish

guts. Garum brought great wealth to the town. This last action of hoisting the tuna out of the sea is known as“the raising” and the image to be seen in many photographs aroundtown is typical of this traditional tuna fishing.The only Almadaba that remain in Spain are those of Barbate, Conil,Zahara de los Atunes and Tarifa, where each spring preparations aremade for the arrival of the tuna. The entire process, from fishing tocanning is also carried out in these localities, especially in Barbate.Fishing provides the livelihood of many villages on the coast of theGibraltar Straits.The quantity of tuna fished over the years has declined from

the record catch in 1949 of 43,500 fish caught. The maincause for the diminishing number of tuna is the over-fishingby the efficient high-tech fishing vessels operating in the

area. La Almadraba consiste en un complejo laberinto de redes situadasa 3 Km de la costa y con más de 30 metros de profundidad queguían a los atunes a su paso hacia una trampa de la que no puedenescapar. La parte central de la Almadraba, llamada copo, disponede una red en el fondo que izan los pescadores cuando ya se en-cuentran los atunes en ella. Esta última acción se conoce en lazona como “levanta” y constituye la imagen típica de esta tradi-cional pesca del atún.

The Almadraba consists of a complex labyrinth of nets more than30 metres deep located 3 km from the coast and is designed toguide the tuna into a trap from which they cannot escape. Thecentral part of the trap known as “el copo” (the snowflake) is ahuge net that the fishermen hoist up when they have a catch.

La Puerta de Jerez (1) es uno de los monumentosmás emblemáticos e importantes de la ciudad.Tras la conquista cristiana se ampliaron las mura-llas y se abrió la puerta de Jerez.En el año 2000 fue restaurada, habilitándose unespacio para la colocación del cuadro “El Cristo deLos Vientos” obra del artista Tarifeño GuillermoPérez Villalta. El escudo situado en la parte supe-rior de la puerta acompaña a la leyenda que re-cuerda la toma de la ciudad por sancho IV el Bravoen 1292.Saldremos desde la oficina de turismo, sita enpaseo de la Alameda, aquí se encontraba la Ermitadedicada a la Virgen del Sol (2), patrona de losmarineros. Esta Ermita estaba situada en el solarque hoy ocupa la oficina de Turismo, antigua bi-blioteca municipal.Nos dirigimos a la izquierda para adentramos en elcasco antiguo, pasando por el Mercado de Abas-tos (3), que funciona como tal desde 1928, aun-que data de 1536 como convento. En sus orígenesfue el convento de la santísima Trinidad de los tri-nitarios descalzos, orden religiosa cuya principalmisión era rescatar cautivos de los piratas berbe-riscos.Seguimos por las Plazas (4): San Martín, San His-cio, C/del Lorito, C/San Francisco, calle peatonal,turística y típica, en la que podemos contemplar

un número de bares y establecimientos, idealespara la noche tarifeña. Conectando a la izquierdacon la Calzada, calle principal de Tarifa, amplia ybulliciosa arteria de la ciudad, donde podremostomar algo y probar los suculentos pasteles y dul-ces tarifeños, de reconocido prestigio en la provin-cia de Cádiz. Observamos la Iglesia de San Mateo(5) , de estructura gótica terminada ya bien en-trado el siglo XVI. Conserva algunos cuadros y es-culturas barrocas de interés, así como varias obrasnotables de orfebrería. Frente a su fachada giramosa la derecha y encontramos el Casino y CárcelReal, Plaza de la Fuente (6) con la primera fuentede agua corriente instalada en Tarifa en el año1831. Subiendo a la izquierda hasta la Plazuela delViento se encuentra El Miramar (7), un miradorenclavado en la muralla. También encontramos elEdificio del Ayuntamiento en la Plaza de SantaMaría o de la ranita (8). Bajando las escaleras ygirando a la izquierda, al final encontramos el Cas-tillo de Guzmán el Bueno (9), datado del año960, por orden del califa Abderraman III, se le-vantó sobre las ruinas de un posible campamentomilitar romano.Recientes excavaciones arqueológicas efectuadasen el Castillo han descubierto la existencia de ves-tigios de la Edad de Bronce, época Púnica, Ibérica,así como del alto y bajo Imperio Romano desde su

etapa inicial republicana. Tras la conquista cris-tiana por el Rey Sancho IV El Bravo en 1294 se pro-duce el acontecimiento que ha dado renombremundial a Tarifa. La actitud heroica de Guzmán ElBueno, el cual prefirió sacrificar a su hijo antes deentregar a los musulmanes el castillo que el rey lehabía confiado. Seguimos por la calle de enfrente donde se ubicala Iglesia de San Francisco (10), de estilo Ba-rroco y Neoclásico.Volviendo al castillo, dejando el puerto a nuestraizquierda seguiremos hacia delante pasando por elpuerto pesquero, nos encontramos el Castillo deSanta Catalina (11), construido en la segunda dé-cada del siglo XX, siguiendo el estilo neorrenacen-tista. Parece ser que, antiguamente, allá por elsiglo XVI, en el cerro hubiera una ermita. Seguimoshasta adentrarnos en al camino de la isla de laspalomas (12), es en esta es donde se encuentrael punto más meridional de Europa, separando elmar Mediterráneo del Atlántico.En el año 1808 se construye el camino de la islaque hasta entonces estaba separada de Tarifa.

La Puerta de Jerez (1) is one of the most em-blematic and important monuments of the city,made after the Christian conquest expanded thewalls and opened the door of Jerez.In 2000 it was restored, allowing for the painting"El Cristo de Los Vientos" and work of Tarifeñoartist Guillermo Pérez Villalta. The shield is locatedat the top of the door and attached to the legendthat recalls the storming of the city by Sancho IVthe Brave in 1292.Departing from the tourist office and located inPaseo de la Alameda ist he chapel dedicated to theVirgen del Sol (2), the patron saint of sailors. Thischapel was located on the site now occupied bythe tourist office and former city library.

Turning left to move into the old town, past theMarket (3), which has existed since 1928 and tothis day continues, although data from 1536 showsthat is served as a convent of the Holy Trinity. TheTrinitarian had a bare religious order whose mainmission was to rescue captives from the Barbarypirates.Plazas (4) San Martín, San Hiscius, C/ del Lorito,C/ San Francisco, are pedestrian streets where youcan see a number of bars and shops, and are allideal for night out in Tarifa. Connecting with themain street of Tarifa, a large and bustling thor-oughfare of the town, where you can drink andtaste the delicious cakes and sweets renowned inTarifa, and throughout the province of Cadiz.

The Church of San Mateo (5) is Gothic structurecompleted in the sixteenth century. Here one canfind preserved Baroque paintings and sculptures ofinterest as well as several notable works of jewelry.To the right you can find the Casino, Jail andPlaza de la Fuente (the Fountain Square) (6)where the first source of running water was in-stalled in Tarifa in 1831. Close by is the Plaza delViento (the windy square) and Miramar (7), alookout point located at the wall. We also find theTown Hall building in the Plaza de Santa Mariaor the frog (8). Heading down the stairs and turn-ing left is the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno (9)(Castle), dating from the year 960 by order ofCaliph Abderrahman III, and originally built on the

Eight Kilometers of fine, golden sand.Perfect for bathing on calm days or with a mo-derate breeze. Ideal for Kitesurf between Sep-tember and June. In summer months sailing isonly permitted in the designated area. The areaof Dos Mares (Two Seas) is perfect for beginnerkite and windsurfers and is the most visited bythe kiteschools. Here the east wind (levante)comes off the land, therefore it is not a recom-mended condition for inexperienced riders. Tidechanges sometimes cause a large puddle of upto 4 km to form.There are several beach bars on the shore.

En Tarifa el viento protagoniza la vida de sus habitantes. Permite na-vegar casi todo el año. A continuación te vamos a explicar todo lo quedebes saber para moverte con la habilidad de un local. Casi siempre el viento es de levante o poniente. Deberás usarlo o pro-tegerte de él según tu interés. El levante en Tarifa es un viento cálidodel este, que alcanza su máxima fuerza al cruzar el Estrecho de Gi-braltar. Puede llegar a rachas de 50 nudos. Se necesita experienciapara navegar en estas condiciones. Si lo tuyo es tomar el sol sin ter-minar sepultado por la arena debes apostar por la protección que tebrinda La Caleta, el Arte Vida, Paloma baja y un montón de sitios. Elponiente en nuestra localidad viene del mar. Es menos cálido y másconstante. El sueño de los kiters es encadenar varios días con un po-nientito de 25 nudos.Las siguientes playas son nuestras preferidas:

In Tarifa the wind plays a main role in the lives of its inhabitants. Thewind allows us to sail almost all year. Below, we will explain all youneed to know to move through Tarifa like a local. The wind is almostalways “levante” (east wind) and “poniente” (west wind). Dependingon your interests, you can use the wind or protect yourself from it. The“levante” in Tarifa is a warm wind blowing from the east, which reachesits maximum strength as it crosses the Strait of Gibraltar. It can reachgusts of 50 knots. One needs plenty of experience to windsurf or kite-surf in these conditions. If you enjoy sun-bathing without getting bu-ried beneath the sand you should choose beaches which offerprotection: La Caleta, Arte-Vida, lower-Paloma, and many other sites.The “poniente” in our area comes from the ocean. A piede playa encontramos las Ruinas de Baelo Clau-dia, ciudad Romana del siglo II a.C.

Seguimos hasta llegara una cala romántica, localizada frente a una zonaresidencial de lujo pegada a la montaña. Debemosbajar por una escalera. No dispone de restaurantesni lugares de ocio a pie de playa, no debemos pre-ocuparnos, están a pocos km en el pueblo de Za-hara.

El castillo de Guzmán el Bueno es el monu-mento por excelencia de la ciudad de Tarifa.Está situado en una elevación del terreno,frente al mar. De aquí parte la muralla querodea a Tarifa. Fue construido en piedra en elaño 960 por orden del califa Abderramán III,sobre las ruinas de un antiguo poblado romano.El alcázar fue posteriormente ganado por loscristianos, en 1292.Su planta es trapezoidal, situándose en losángulos torres cuadradas, guardando unadistancia de separación equidistante entreellas, dando impresión de solidez. Su inte-rior está formado por dos patios de armas, se-parados por una galería de dos plantas.Adosadas a las murallas, existen largas y es-trechas naves de carácter militar. La base dela defensa del castillo es la parte superiorde las murallas (adarve), rematada con al-menas. De las quince torres originales delsiglo X, macizas y de altura superior a los

muros, faltan hoy dos del sector este que nuncase reconstruyeron. En el siglo XIV se abrieronventanas y se levantó una impresionante torredel Homenaje, al sur, que originalmente tuvoel doble de la altura actual. La puerta principaldel castillo se encuentra en el frente oeste, de-

fendida por dos torres. En la actua-lidad el exterior de esta puerta seremata en un arco de medio punto,pero al parecer, fue de herraduraen origen. Además, el castillo o

alcazaba tiene una puertamás pequeña en el ladoeste, incluso se ha encon-

trado otra puerta secundariamás, en la muralla norte,pero tapiada.El castillo de Guzmán elBueno fue reformado para ladefensa de los piratas aprincipios del siglo XVII. Enel siglo XVIII se adaptaronparte de las murallas para lainstalación de artillería, y enla actualidad aún tiene uso mi-

litar, ya que es propiedaddel Ministerio de Defensa.Es de acceso libre y Monu-mento de Interés Culturaldesde 1949.

El Torreón de Guzmán el Bueno fue, para unos,construido por los almohades del siglo XII, paraotros ya por los cristianos en el siglo XIV.Se trata de una torre albarrana (separada delcastillo y unida a él mediante una muralla -co-racha- de unos 40 metros). Es de planta octo-gonal, hasta el siglo XIX medía 20 metros dealtura pero en la actualidad está igualada a lamuralla. La torre quedaba en una de las esqui-nas del recinto amurallado. Esta torre fue cons-truida en argamasa, y se la conoce por elnombre de torre de Guzmán el Bueno, en honora este personaje. La historia cuenta que dejóque degollaran a su hijo - incluso él mismo fa-cilitó el puñal - antes que entregar la plaza.Junto a la puerta del castillo, a los pies de la torreoctogonal hay un monumento dedicado a SanchoIV en el VII centenario de la toma de Tarifa.

El Torreón

The Castle of Guzmán el Bueno is the most im-portant historical monument of the city of Ta-rifa. It is located on an elevated terrain facingthe sea. The historical wall surrounding Tarifabegins here. The castle was built in stone in theyear 960 by order of Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III,on the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement.The Alcázar was subsequently won by the Chris-tians in 1292. The castle’s base is trapezoidal, with square to-wers at the corners, built with an equal distanceof separation between them to give an impres-sion of solidity. Its interior consists of two court-yards of arms, separated by a two-story Gallery.Attached to the walls, there are long, narrownaves of a military nature. The basis of the de-fense of the castle is the top of the walls(adarve), topped with battlements. Of the fif-teen massive original towers of the 10th century,which rose higher than the walls, there are twomissing which were never rebuilt. In the 14th

century windows were opened and an impressiveTower of homage was erected towards the South,originally twice its current height. The main gate of the castle is located on the Wes-tern front, defended by two towers. Currently theoutside of this gate ends in a semicircular arch,but was reportedly horseshoe-shaped in origin. Inaddition, the castle or fortress has a small dooron the East side, within which another secondarydoor was found, within the North wall, but it wasfound covered. The castle of Guzmán el Bueno was reformed fordefense from pirates in the early 17th century.In the 18th century a section of the walls wasadapted for the installation of artillery. The cas-tle currently maintains its military nature and isowned by the Ministry of Defense. It has beenopen to public access and has been considereda Monument of Cultural Interest since 1949.

It's an ‘albarrana’Tower; independent from the Castle but joinedby a wall – ‘coracha’ -of about 40 meters). It isoctagonal, and until the 19th century measured20 metres in height but currently equals theheight of the wall. The tower was one of the cor-ners of the walled enclosure. This tower was builtin mortar, and is known by the name of ‘TheTo-wer of Guzmán el Bueno,’ in honor of “Guzmanthe Good.” Legend says that he allowed theArab invaders to kill his son, even offering thedagger himself, rather thandeliver the square to them. Beside the door of the Castle,at the foot of the octagonaltower, there is a monu-ment dedicated toSancho IV and the7th century con-quest of Tarifa.

La antigua ciudad romana de BaeloClaudia está situada en la Ensenadade Bolonia a unos 22 km al noroestede la ciudad de Tarifa. El estudio de sus restos arquitectóni-cos muestra su origen romano a fina-les del siglo II a. C., observándose yadesde esa época una gran riqueza quela convierte en un centro económicoimportante dentro del área del Medi-terráneo.La ciudad nace a finales del siglo IIa. C. sobre un asentamiento fenicio-púnico más antiguo (Bailo, Baelo-kun), y su existencia está muyrelacionada con el comercio con elnorte de África (era el principalpuerto marítimo que enlazaba con laciudad de Tánger en Marruecos). Esposible que Baelo Claudia tuviera al-gunas funciones de centro adminis-trativo, pero la pesca, la industria de

salazón y el garum (unasalsa derivada delmismo) fueron las prin-

cipales fuentes deriqueza. El empe-rador romanoClaudio le conce-

dió el rango de municipium (munici-pio romano).La vida de estas poblaciones alcanzópleno esplendor entre los siglos I a.C. y II d. C., iniciándose su decaden-cia a partir de segunda mitad delsiglo II, cuando un gran maremotoarrasó gran parte de la ciudad. A susdesastrosos efectos se sumaron la cri-sis del siglo III y las incursiones dehordas de piratas, fundamentalmentemauritanos y germanos. Aunque ex-perimentó un ligero rebrote en elsiglo III, la ciudad fue abandonadadefinitivamente en el siglo VII.En el yacimiento se conservan loselementos más representativos queconstituían la esencia de una ciudadromana; ésta contaba con una cercao muralla, edificios de carácter admi-nistrativo como la curia (senadolocal) o el archivo municipal, unaplaza pública (foro), un palacio dejusticia (basílica judicial), situado enel foro frente a los templos, tieneplanta rectangular y mide 19,5 por35,5 metros, estaba presidida por unaestatua del emperador Trajano de másde tres metros de altura.

The ancient Roman city of Baelo Clau-dia is located in Bolonia about 22miles northwest of the city of Tarifa.The study of its architectural remainsshow its Roman origin from the latesecond century C. and since then itmaintained a wealth which made it animportant economic center in theMediterranean.A Phoenician-Punic settlement (Bailo,Baelokun), its existence is closely re-lated to trade with North Africa (itwas the main sea port that connectedwith the city of Tangier in Morocco). Claudia Baelo may have had otherfunctions for this administrative cen-ter, but the fishing, salting industryand garum (a sauce derived from it)were the main sources of wealth. TheRoman Emperor Claudius made it partof the Municipium and therefore aRoman town.The life of these populations reached

full bloom between I a. C. and II d.C., but began to decline after the sec-ond half of the century, when a largetsunami devastated much of the city.Hordes of pirates, mostly Mauritaniansand Germans, also followed these dis-astrous effects and added to the crisisof the third century. Although it expe-rienced a slight rebound in the thirdcentury, the city was finally aban-doned in the seventh century.In this site are the remains of the mostrepresentative elements that consti-tute the essence of a Roman city. Ithad a fence or wall, administrativebuildings and the Curia (local senate),the municipal archives, a public square(board), a palace of justice (judicialbasilica) which, located at the front ofthe temples, is rectangular and meas-ures 19.5 by 35.5 meters and wasdominated by a statue of the EmperorTrajan over three meters high.

Four temples, three devoted to eachof the components of the CapitolineTriad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) andone dedicated to the Egyptian goddessIsis, related to the cult Isiaca on thepeninsula, were recently discovered bya group of archaeologists.The largest building is the TheatreClaudia Baelo where all the actorswere men, even in the roles of women,wearing masks to interpret the char-acter they represented.Also visible are the remains of theshop (tabernae) market (macellum),originally enclosed for the sale ofmeat and food in general, and con-sisting of fourteen stores and an in-terior courtyard, spa (thermae) andtheater.This archaeological site and culturalproperty is accompanied by a mu-seum, built in 2007, designed by ar-chitect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra.
