    Letter of credit offers almost complete

    protection to the seller but the buyer is put

    to many disadvantages and has to make

    payments against documents only. Beforeagreeing to open a letter of credit in favour of

    the seller, the opener must be satisfied with

    the creditworthiness and general reputation

    of the seller.

    should be done with great care. After

    receiving the document from the overseas

    supplier's bank the importer's bank willscrutinise them to verify the extent of

    India, must be received by authoriseddealers, irrespective of amount, by debit

    themselves or by means of a crossedcheque drawn by him on his other

    bankers.

    TIME LIMIT FOR IMPORT

    REMITTANCE:

    The remittance against imports should

    be completed not later than 6 months

    from the date of shipment. Accordingly,

    deferred payment arrangementsinvolving payments beyond 6months are

    not permissible without approval of

    RBI/Gol.
