-er and –ir verbs have IDENTICAL endings in the preterite tense.

Affirmatives and Negatives

In English, the use of double negatives are considered incorrect. Double negatives in Spanish are often required. They do not change the meaning of the sentence.

In English:◦There is no one at the door. – 1 negative◦There isn’t no one at the door. – 2 negatives =

some one is at the door (not correct)In Spanish:

Alguno(a) and ninguno(a) must match the gender of the noun they replace or modify. They have different forms when used before masculine singular nouns.

No conozco ningún sitio Web cómico.◦ I do not know any funny Web sites.

If a verb is preceded by NO, words that follow must be negative. A double negative is required in Spanish when NO precedes the verb.◦No queremos nada.

We do not want anything. (we don’t want nothing.)◦No me gusta ninguna cámara digital.

I do not like any digital camera. (I don’t like not any.)

However, if the negative word comes before the verb, there is no need to use NO.◦Mi padre nunca usa la computadora.

My dad never uses the computer.◦Nadie navega por Internet ahora.

No one is surfing the Web now.

Ningunos (as) is only used with nouns that are not typically singular. In all other cases, ninguno or ninguna are used.

No compro ningunos jeans.No compro ninguna computadora.
