Las técnicas de Elementos Finitos son herramientas
poderosas para la solución de ecuaciones diferenciales
Pueden considerarse como extensión de los métodos de
parámetros indeterminados, propuestos por Gauss en el
siglo XVIII, pero más desarrollados a inicios del siglo XX
Aunque se encuentran antecedentes de las mismas
ideas en un trabajo publicado por Courant en 1943, los
aportes iniciales más significativos se dieron en la
década de 1960, paralelamente al desarrollo de las
computadoras digitales

Inicialmente las aplicaciones estuvieron limitadas al
análisis estructural, pero ya en la década de 1960 se
tuvieron aplicaciones a algunos problemas de mecánica
de fluidos
Actualmente se usan elementos finitos para resolverecuaciones diferenciales en prácticamente todos los
campos de la ciencia y la ingeniería
Entre los temas en los que se ha venido trabajando en lasúltimas décadas están la generación automática de
mallas, la solución más eficiente de grandes sistemas de
ecuaciones, el desarrollo de elementos finitos másprecisos, la solución de problemas no lineales

Los modelos de elementos finitos se pueden adaptarfácilmente a geometrías irregulares, con contornos
arbitrarios
Permiten tratar sin mayor dificultad medios nohomogéneos y anisotrópicos (aunque la dificultad está
en obtener las propiedades de los materiales)
En un gran número de situaciones prácticas se disponede programas de cómputo que realizan todos los pasos
requeridos para la solución
El refinamiento adaptivo de los modelos permitirásimplificar la definición del modelo para conseguir los
objetivos de precisión
