A partir de 1913, en una serie de artículos de E.T. "Scoop"Gleeson para el San Francisco Bulletin, se utilizaba con un sentido negativo, Gleeson usó el término de forma más exhaustiva cuando al reseñar el tipo de música ejecutada por una orquesta del ejército, señaló que sus integrantes entrenaban a ritmo de ragtime y jazz.

AGRUPACIONES DE JAZZ MÁS CORRIENTES: TRIO. Formado generalmente por dos
instrumentos rítmicos (batería y contrabajo) y uno melódico, que suele ser el piano o la guitarra. Esta agrupación se puso de moda a partir de los años 40 con el inicio del jazz moderno.

- CUARTETO. Es quizás la agrupación más característica, consiste en añadir a la anterior un instrumento de viento, trompeta o saxofón. En un QUINTETO habrá dos instrumentos de viento.

BIG BAND. Las más comunes cuentan con una sección de ritmo (piano, contrabajo, batería y guitarra) y otra de viento de viento (saxofones, trompetas y trombones). La época más importante de este tipo de agrupaciones fue en los años 30 o “era swing”.
