UNIT 4: THE SOUND

Sound is a mechanical wave which travels through a medium from one location to another. This motion through a medium occurs as one particle of the medium interacts with its neighboring particle, transmitting the mechanical motion and corresponding energy to it. This transport of mechanical energy through a medium by particle interaction is what makes a sound wave a mechanical wave.

SOUND IS A WAVE
Sound are vibrations that can travel through different materials.
Sound travels through air or other material such as stone, water, glass and brick.
Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because there is nothing to vibrate. Sound needs a medium to be transfered.
Propagation velocity of sound in different medium.
Medium Velocity
Rubber
Air
Air vapour
Sea water
Concrete
Copper
Glass
Steel
VIDEO: HOW THE EAR WORKS.
Echoes are sound waves bouncing off surfaces.
The echo is usually quieter than the original noise as energy is lost as the wave travels along.
Echolocation• Echolocation is a process of detecting and locating objects by sending out sound waves and hearing the echoes that return from the objects.• This is used in order to “see” rather than to communicate.
ECHO AND REVERBERATION
Distance = Speed x Time
