My internship is an administrative intern
position, working closely with the head
administrator of a summer school program in
the St. Paul Public Schools. I have had NO administrative experience
prior to this internship.
Although I will be completing duties for the
benefit of the entire program, my primaryresponsibility will be the ELL program for
newcomers housed at the site.

I attended many meetings planning kick-off
day (June 15ththe teacher planning day)
I attended a scheduling session in an attempt
to ensure the ELL students were correctlyscheduled
I unpacked and organized ELL materials so
the ELL teachers would have access to what
they need to do their jobs. I helped organize materials for the
orientation meetings and for the first day
student orientation sessions.

I co-facilitated the teacher orientation
meeting and helped (attempted to help)
teachers get set up with the needed supplies
and materials. There were MANY fires to putout that day regarding logistics.
I got the best advice from my supervisor:
Today is about listening to whats going on
and reassuring teachers that its all going tobe ok. Actually, its what I needed to hear
tooanxious teachers were making me really
anxious until my supervisor told me that.

My supervisor is great. He has been very
patient with me and has been really good
about explaining EVERYTHINGbecause I
need a lot of explanation of theadministrative side of things!
I taught ELL summer school for 10 years, so I
feel like I am in a good position to support
the ELL program. I also know many of theteachers because I had teamed with them in
the past as a summer school teacher.

The planning meetings were eye opening. I
knew obviously that administrators had to do
a lot of work before teachers actually
showed up, but I had no idea how much!(Like at the grocery store when you buy
cerealits just there to buy; we dont think
too hard about all the hard work that had to
happen to get the grain harvested, prepared,
processed, packaged and shipped so I could
have breakfast).

PATIENCE! I get frustrated easily
with myself for not knowing whats going on
With the teachers for needing to be a little more
flexible.
Continuing to adjust my viewpoint from
TEACHER (Whats best for MY ROOM) to
ADMINISTRATOR (Whats best for THESCHOOL)

Organize ALL teacher materials, not just ELL
(This was the major issue on Friday)
Advocate for that more with the site leaders
so they see my point of view better.

Its MUCH harder than it looks
Teachers are NOT always right
Flexibility and go with the flow are essential
A BIG part of the administrators job isreassurance that things are going to be ok.

School was canceled due to a power outage.
I helped the other administrators direct
traffic and send walkers home.
(Transportation already canceled the buses)With no power, there was literally nothing I
could do, so I just went home after that.

The first day of summer school with students
was 6/18. I will continue to be working at
summer school until July 11th.
Im hoping that once things calm down, Illget a bigger picture of the full scope of
adminbeyond scheduling and enforcer.
