USEFULL DATA
entry viSaThe legal measures of the National Migrations Authority allow many nationalities a 30 days stay. It can be extended to 60 additional days stay in the relevant Migrations offices. Remember that to be able to leave Bolivia by plane you must pay an exit tax of 25 USD compulsorily.
cLimateBolivia has a great variety of climates. In the Altiplano or in the Andean areas above 3.000 metres of sea level, the climate is very harsh. The temperatures during daytime vary from 15 to 18 degrees Celcius, whilst at night they are always cold. The rain season begins in November and stops in March. The valleys or Yungas region are hotter and sub tropical humid. The annual temperature average is 23 degrees Celcius. In the Tropical area of the planes (eastern part of Bolivia) the average temperature is 30 degrees Celcius. The rain season starts in December and stops in March.
heaLthThe sickness which affects more often to travellers is the highness sickness. For the first 24 hours avoid long walks and do not carry heavy things. Another frequent sickness is diarrhoea. Drink only boiled or bottled water. Avoid the consumption of water directly from the tap. Eating out in markets is not a problem for the visitor.
SatetyneSSAll Bolivian cities are extremely welcoming and quite, but you can always find pick pockets like in any other place of the world. It shall be very useful to carry a photocopy of the passport and be careful with personal belongings. That’s all.
currencyThe official currency in Bolivia is the Bolivian (Bs). There are coins of 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1,2 and 5 Bolivians; and bills are 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Bolivians.

Out of the Historic City Centre and that calm which surrounds it we can visit the Castle of the Arbour or the Tarabuco and Yotala villages, back in time, the prehistoric palaeontologists centres from the cretaceous period that uncovers the natural and cultural attractions of Sucre.
NATURAL AND CULTURAL ATTRACTION
boLivia Way - Sucre
In this Andean country located in the heart of South America, we find a history divided in different periods and has a wide enriched cultural production due to different events which make it stand out.
At the beginning of the pre Colombian period, we find cultures which are dated from year 6.000 A. C. In this pre colonial era arise the Incasian literature. It is characterized by the Aymara literature in beautiful songs and ancient oral legends. The Quechua literature is also very well known by its poetry, religious songs and heroic stories.
Subsequently, it proceeded to the colonial period, the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega wrote the work: “Los comentarios Reales” (The Royal Comments), one of the classics of Universal literature. Within he evokes the native race that was ruled by the conqueror and underlines the love and pride as vital signs of this people.
In the Bolivian independence period and its foundation as an Independent Republic in 1825, it will be taught the crucible of the new libertarian ideas in the University of San Francisco Javier. University PHD teachers and students discussed the revolutionary principles, in spite of the bans, Literature Clubs and political ideas based on the French Revolution formed.
Therefore, we have “En las Tierras del Potosí” by Jaime Mendoza, who together with Arguedas and Chirveches is one of the main representatives of the Bolivian realistic novel. The War of the Chaco (1932 - 1935), js reflected in the novels of Augusto Céspedes “Sangre de Mestizos” and in “Aluvión de “Fuego” by Oscar Cerruto as well as “Chaco” by Luis Toro Ramallo.
At the beginning of the XX century, we underline the Works of José Manuel Cortés, who published “Ensayo sobre la Historia de Bolivia”. But it shall be Gabriel René Moreno, the representative of the novel. We must underline the three great modern poets: Ricardo Jaimes Freyre, Reynolds y Franz Tamayo.
We cannot leave behind the writer of the marginal world Victor Hugo Viscarra. He died at the age of 48 years old who wrote “I was drunk but I remember” and “Alcoholatum and other drinks” among others. Someone said of him Victor Hugo Viscarra will be remembered smiling either intoxicated or sober but always smiling.

boLivia Way - La Paz
Placed within a deep canyon at 3.650 metres above sea level, surrounded by big & precious mountains belonging to the Andean Mountains, governmental capital of Bolivia and capital of the department, we find the city of La Paz where together with El Alto (4.000 metres above sea level) it is the biggest and inhabited core centre of Bolivia.
The city of La Paz was founded by the Spanish Captain Alonso de Mendoza on the 20th of October of 1548. Its name commemorates the restoration of peace after the civil war which followed the insurrection of Gonzalo Pizarro against Blasco Nuñez Vela. It is the birthplace of the independence; on the 16th of July of 1809 Pedro Domingo Murillo signed the document of the liberation from Spain.
In La Paz, the most simple and daily facts are wrapped by an aura strangely special. The activity is frenzied, some times difficult to keep on track, noisy streets packed with cars, taxis and public buses.
A valley which reminds to the lunar surface. To seat down at the Murillo Square, home of the Government palace and the National Congress. Walking by the 16th of July Avenue and its gardens, green carpet of the financial centre of the city, squares invaded by doves, numerous markets full of daily life, Quechua and Aymara whispers in infinite streets full of stories, museums of past and present, great churches and at the back, the three snow-covered peaks, the great Illimani (6.465 metres above sea level).
You cannot forget its night life. La Paz is a city which never sleeps. Everyday is a good day to drink a beer, listen to a live concert and have the feeling that everything which occurs in this city is magical.
La Paz will not leave you indifferent.

INCONSCIENTECOLECTIVO
COLECTIVEUNCONSCIENCE
It is very difficult to heat the public, in general, for the Bolivian musicians who go for the National Rock scene. Obviously, in the popular masses, there are bands which have achieved a place in which they feel identified with regards to any other cultural moves. But as everyone very well knows, it works well for them to make Latin Pop Rock Music economically.
Regarding last year, bands like Quirquiña, Deszaire y Octavia have been present in their live concerts in tours around Bolivian Bars in the United States. They have gone together with the one which has been up to now the most important musical referent in Bolivia, Llegas. Within this group of bands we can find bands like Alcoholika that was present with the version by Celia of Alcoholika Nation, which was played in the soundtrack of the film “Who killed the little white llama”.
It was very pleasant to see bands with a trajectory which goes around the decade. They persist on sending the message to have songs that can be identified as 100% Bolivian. It was the case of Atajo they celebrated big time the 10 anniversary of their artist career. They recorded 4 albums in studio and three more live concerts albums in those 10 years. The last album “Made in Bolivia” celebrates the decade.
Best albums in 2007 present independent bands as: Santamandinga, Surfin Wagner (“Sufers del Choquellapu EP”), the disappeared band Trip – mixed race rock (“Meconio” and last but not least album “Meconio Vol 2”), Querembas (“Manicomnio”), Arkanos (“Tierra de Héroes”), Elemental Sickness, Oil, Hate, Supay, Rabeat. For the new musical management: Maldita Jakeca, Rantes, Llawar come to scene with new Bolivian musical productions with high quality 100% Bolivian.

MUSICAL EXPLOSION
After a long night out, fun and loads of alcohol; the next day is inevitable to have migraine. Due to this situation, from the South of Bolivia, Maldita Jakeca creates a musical explosion with Rock n´Roll, Funk, Rap, Hip Hop, Punk and sexplicit language in parallel to their Spanglish.
It should be included to the Rock Alterlatino which produces Power to the Sound as much in the Studio as in a live concert. “Alka Seltzer” (it means hang over) was the name of their first album, even if it is a lack of technical means for Sergio Conejo Arce musical composition skills, it represents the first try to “point out” and to create a sound which can be recognised. The goal was achieved with the second album – “Rompecabezas” to joint the nonconformist era with the communicational political social age and to be successful that will identify them in the future with “Nada Cambia Todo Cumbia”, within one of the albums most complete in the National Rock.
Now, we witness the evolution of the band with “El Encholado”. This is a work completely professional. It is ready to deep into and creates a space in the music of the country towards other continents. Regarding this third album, it is a great tribute to the passion of the popular Bolivian music with Funk n´Roll belonging to Jakeca style. And for the future, the band is working in the studio in the 10 years anniversary of Jakeca in 2008 with a new album “La Jakecada” and a live concert documental movie.

NECESSITY ALWAYS PRESENT
True musicians, they are moved by the necessity to make music and let flow the feelings through it. They discovered a traditional remedy for human stupidity and they want to tell everybody. It is Rantes (name of the main character Argentinean movie by Eliseo Subieta) which little by little would make poetry completely Rock style and Alterlatin.
As an independent band they began to go through thousand of obstacles as for the audience as their pockets. Commercially speaking, they were difficult to be understood in a market in which you fight for global music. But the band has persevered during the year that is how they have got fans and their first album in 2001 – “Cuentos Bizarros” did not take them out from the place they were due to its bizarre name. That was an album full ”.of beautiful lyrics, but the sound was very defective, “I wish they had money to make it better
But the necessity is always present, it did not allow their music to die and in 2004 they brought out a new album “Tuneles”, the poetry moved amongst the heaviest guitars. It was Hard Rock with conservatory melodies. Thanks to this last album, in the National music sphere, we know a band called Rantes exists that make Rock “Paceño”. Together with live concerts, Rantes has its essence thriving within the Collective unconscious in our society.
Just come out on the shelves for all publics the latest album “Antídoto” in which we shall delight our ears with a more elaborated sound & refreshing lyrics full of poetry it will take Rantés to the new latin scene in the next coming years...”

THE CAPITALOF THE VALLEYSIt is considered as the capital of the valleys of Bolivia, at 2.500 metres above sea level, surrounded by fertile and productive fields. In origin, it was called Royal Vila of Oropeza, the story tells it was founded twice, the first time whilst the Peru Viceroy reigned on the 15th of August of 1571 by Captain Geronimo de Osorio and three years later on the 1st of January of 1574, Sebastian Barba de Padilla founded once more the land of the valleys. At the beginning it was a centre for agriculture production to provide food to the mining cities of the region, mainly to Potosi.
When you feel that nice climate and walk the City you will discover its colonial appearance, its pre Inca trace, its deep rooted customs Quechuas and Aymaras surrounded by amazing natural landscapes. It is economically very active, the city centre is close to Colon Square or 14th of September Square, it gathers the majority of businesses and commercial activity where you can outlook the development of the modern architecture in contrast to the numerous colonial traces.
It is placed in San Pedro´s hill where you can find the always visible, even at night Harmony Christ, monumental sculpture of the artist Cesar Terrazas Pardo. Protector Christ of a height of more than 34 metres, it is bigger than the one in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil.
The City outskirts keep the attractive rural flavour in contrast to the hectic Metropolis. It has a very cosmopolitan night life, in Cochabamba and in its outskirts there are many appeals: architectural jewels, natural beauties and splendid vestiges of the past which make the capital of the valleys a charming place.

Desde tierras lejanas, bus-cando una vida mejor...
Atravesamos grandes valles y subimos las montanas mas altas...
Encontramos el Dorado, pero nos faltaba algo...
Y estaba justo ahi...
COCINA
Y TRADICIONES

CUISINE ANDTRADITIONSIn order to consider the trip to be worth it, we will
assess now the needs of a good meal. Eating
out in Bolivia is cheap and the gastronomy
is delicious. Once you arrive, you have to be
careful with spices in the food. For someone
who´s from abroad, it can be excessively
spiced and can cause some stomach disorder.
So, begin with smooth meals.
Following the brief period of adaptation, we can jump to the gastronomic pleasures of the country. Usually, you can find food stands in markets and squares where you can eat “anticuchos” (thin slices of cow heart meat grilled, with French fries and red pepper) stubbed to a steal stick accompanied with potatoes or you can also taste “charques” (rotten meat that can be used as well to stuff small pies and “tamales”). When there´s a bank holiday, it is interesting to be invited to a barbecue. Surrounded by the bonfire, the people get together to taste “salteñas” and “llauchas” which are basically meat pies stuffed with meat or cheese. As the star of the meals, the prim rabbit. Rabbit or guinea pig which is stretched to the limit and packed in meshes, this delicate meat s roasted in live coals.
It is worth seeing a “pachamanca”. Preparation of a meat which can be “llama” (typical Andean horse which they use to carry goods) cooked under the earth, along with some tubercles,
by stones which were previously heated
and covered with banana leafs. The show is
spectacular but the taste is even better.
Bolivia is the country of the potato; they have
more than thousand and three hundred types of
this tubercle. It is believed that the origin of the
potato starts in the west side part of Bolivia, up
to 4,000 metres above sea level, where the Incas
begun to harvest it. Besides that they found out
that if you leave it buried in the earth it does
not loose its strength but it is transformed into
a different variety, the “chuño”. This tubercle
is the potato dried in the cold weather, under
intense frozen climates which allows in a very
traditional way to preserve and storage them for
long periods of time, even years.

The story tells everything started when the fire coat made the silver threads shine which came out from the soil of the hill. That was the beginning of Potosi. It is connected to the past and the present of Rico Hill, mountain which was originally called Sumaj Orcko “the magnificent Hill”. Potosi is par excellence a mining city with mining centres of tin, silver, copper and lead. It is one of the most important industrial cities of the country.
At 4.000 metres above sea level, Potosi is the Capital of the Department of Potosi. The mining of silver was the incomes source which revolutionized this part of the world. It will turn into the biggest cities of America, competing with the big European cities. Then, everything was wealth, luxurious churches and elegant houses. The “bowels” of Rico Hill run out and all that glory disappeared.
Potosi was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987 due to its baroque architecture, its many churches, monasteries, palaces and colonial houses which form narrow and paving streets, always silent and lonely they keep the magnificent Rico Hill of Potosi secrets which preside over the city when you walk.
You have to keep calm once in Potosi, do not rush or you will suffer altitude sickness. Walk all the corners of this imperial city, savour the essence of its food. The visit to the Rico Hill must be guided; its numerous galleries can be dangerous for the visitor. Share with its people the stories and legends of that past and present of Potosi.

In February, Oruro (3.706 metres above sea level) mobilize and trembles due to Carnival, holidays for
dancing and faith where thousands of pilgrims walk its streets and avenues before they arrive at the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Socavon.
It is very well-known worldwide, preparations and prior parties which lead in that ten days and night’s holidays
during which the folkloric groups accompanied by their musical bands walk through the City. They dance with passion,
willingness and a lot of happiness. They dance for the Virgin of the Socavon who liberated the city from the devil. The time and the distance
is not important when you must keep on dancing, jumping or pirouetting, it is pure Carnival.
When the group of Devils and Blacks do not walk through the City, you can visit a series of places which will show you
the other face of the festive City. You can take a walk through La Paz Street where artisans live. They make the clothes and masks
for the Carnival dancers. You can also visit some of its museums. In the outskirts, you can always relax in one of the Spas: Caprachos and
Obrajes, we highly recommend the Umirí spring waters. You can also visit the snow-covered volcanoes of the Coipasa lake or Paria, Paria was founded
by the Spaniards. Lakes as Poopo or Uru-Uru or mountains like Sajam (6.542 metres above sea level) which is the highest summit of Bolivia.
In 2001, UNESCO declared “Structural Work of oral and intangible World Heritage”
which recognised therefore the cultural and religious value of this Carnival which makes it even more attractive this corner of the ALTIPLANO.

HISTORIA E INDEPENDENCIA
Intérpretes: Erika Andia (Domitila), Miguel Valverde (Jacinto), Guery Sandoval (Narrator), Augustin Mendieta (Perucho), Pablo Fernandez (Chicho).Guión: Juan Cristobal Rios Violand . Música: Daniel Bargach-Mitre, Vico Paredes. Montaje: Daniel Bargach-Mitre.
Jacinto and Domitila, “The love birds” are a Bolivian native Indian couple, the criminals the most searched by police in the country. “The Negro” hires them to transport 50 Kg of cocaine from El Alto until the Brazilian border. The story travels all along Bolivia, shows El Alto, La Paz, Cochabamba, El Chapare, Reberalta, Santa Cruz and Puerto Suarez, it expresses the geographical, ethnic and cultural differences; it also shows incisively and ironically the most serious troubles which happen in everyday life in the country at the same time.
HISTORY AND INDEPENDENCE
There has been a very long time since the brothers Louis Jean and Auguste Marie Lumiere walk their invention through the city of La Paz in 1897. That was the beginning of the first projections which have continued until today, evolving with more talent than technical means. The Bolivian cinema is not well known across its borders, being torn between its history and independence and the high costs of the industry production.
Each movie proves the love for the country. Its power lies in the willingness to tell those stories from the past and the present within an environment of the film industry but not many means. The Bolivian cinema reflects the multicultural vitality sometimes difficult to develop due to the country conditions, but it is always seeking to be a thoughtful cinema of the social and political reality, the most independent in Latin America.
Another fundamental pillar for the Bolivian cinema is the film making. It is not only a referent because of the money which makes but also because it promotes everything with regards to the cinema and the Bolivian culture from where it could be possible to see the most important national productions.

It is placed in the ALTIPLANO, fountain of life, myths and legends. The Titicaca Lake receives its name from the island called Intikjarka: Intj = sun and Kjarka = crag. It has an extension of 204 Km long and 65 Km wide, at 3.819 metres above sea level which makes it the highest navigable lake in the world. The Titicaca Lake climate changes severely from day to night. From May to October, the weather along the daylight are sunny, rains occur rarely and the day time temperature reaches up to 25º C. The weather at night is always cold.
Arriving from La Paz to the Titicaca Lake, it is necessary to go to the central bus station from where buses depart very early in the morning (7 – 7:30 a.m.). You need to cross parts
of the ALTIPLANO where you find Aymaras communities and you make your way parallel to the Royal Mountains of the Andeans. When you arrive to the Tiquina Straits you need to take a boat which will take you to the other side when you start to notice the measures of the Lake. After almost three hours journey, you will reach the city of Copacabana, city placed at 155 Km from La Paz, the city is known throughout the country for its religious celebrations, its cultural heritage and its traditional parties, on the way to Peru.
Many travel agencies sell tickets to take the boat which will take you to the Sol Island, the biggest island in the lake. The best you could do it is to stay in the island for accommodation, its tranquillity and the silence of the lake. It
has got an accidental shape; its inhabitants are of Quechua and Aymara origin, they work as handicraft artisans, agriculture and livestock farming.
Walking along the island, visiting the archaeological ruins, to share with its people and other visitors; experiences, laughs and dreams. Eating its magnificent trout and always on the background the snow-covered mountains, always awaiting for a new sunrise in order to be able to enjoy its sunset. The Titicaca Lake impresses for its tranquillity and its beauty. The waters of the lake will trap you in a profound friendship which will last all your life.
