INTRODUCTIONThe Copala, Guerrero, Mexico erathquake is the largesterathquake to occur in Mexico since the destructive 1985events. It occurred at a time when earthquake awareness inMexico was heightened, as the country prepared for numer-ous commemorative activities of the 1985 main shock, whichwere to occur five days later. The strong motion data fromthis earthquake highlights the enormous progress in instru-mentation that has occurred over the past ten years. As in1985, the accelerogram nearest the epicenter has peak valuesthat are notably smaller than expected, and it seems todisplay a static offset when integrated, Indeed, accelerationson rock at all distances average below values that wereexpected based on previous experience in Guerrero. Table 1 lists hypocentral parameters for the earthquake. The UNAM epicenter is shown in Figure 1. All the hypo-centers derived from teleseismic data are demonstrably less
reliable. The UNAM hypocenter listed here is consistent withobservations that the S-P time at the Copala strong motionstation is 3.0 seconds and that the hypocenter is southeast ofCopala based on first motions (Anderson et al., 1995). For theteleseismic depth of about 20 km, this implies an epicentraldistance of 13 km from Copala, a constraint that plays animportant role in the UNAM location. We belive that thefault plane involved is the shalow-dipping plane (Table 1),which strikes parallel to the coast and the subduction zoneand dips towards the north. This mechanism is consistentwith focal mechanisms that have been observed in numer-ous previous earthquakes (Suarez et al., 1994), and it isconsistent with observed locations of microerathquakesshows several aftershock locations, obtained from the USGeological Survey Preliminary Determination of Epicenters.

BACKGROUND
The seismic activity along the Mexican coastline, where the Cocos, Rivera, and Pacific plates collide with the North American plate, represents the source of most of the strong earthquakes experienced by the different civilizations that have developed over the centuries in the Mexican territory, as documented by the inhabitants of the Valley of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spaniards (Figure 1), who referred to an earthquake that occurred in the year Uno Pedernal (One Flint), corresponding to the year 1480 (Suarez and Acosta 1996).
The Pacific Mexican coast, consisting of the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, is part of the so called fire belt and has been regarded as one of the regions with the highest seismic activity in the world. From 1875 to 2008 more than 160 large earthquakes (magnitude M > 6.5) occurred in this region (Figure 2).
INTRODUCTION
One of the major seismic catastrophes in recent Mexican history took place the morning of 19 September 1985 in Mexico City, resulting from the ground motion amplification of the M 8.1 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Michoacan. The effects of that earthquake caused at least 10,000 deaths and 30,000 injuries in Mexico City, which is located about 400 km away from the epicenter. The analysis of seismic records from that event allowed scientists to determine that the effect of the energy in the

Antecedentes
