Assignment at Utica National InsuranceTitle: Claims System Support Analyst InternManager: Chris WilsonResponsibilities: Generating reports in OBIEE and Excel, Document processing for CCS, Investigating system errors, Updating the mainframe, Creating a claims marketing piece
Generating reports in OBIEE and Excel• Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition:
– Gathering report requirements– Finding each applicable subject area in OBIEE– Running the report– Exporting the report to Excel and formatting it, sending it to
those who requested it– Purpose: Providing people in the company with data
they need to solve problems and make decisions• Monthly Expense Reports in Excel:
– Generating reports for Claim Managers via Excel pivot table– Saving reports in PDF format and placing them in the
appropriate folders – Purpose: Helping Claim Managers analyze our claims
expenses and make decisions accordingly
Corporate Claims Support• Customer Survey Letters
– Obtaining claim data from mainframe– Entering mainframe data into outgoing
survey form– Entering data from returned form into
Access database– Purpose: Gaining customer feedback
and ensuring that customer satisfaction is up to par
• Preparing hundreds of checks for mailing (often to healthcare providers)– Purpose: Fulfilling our obligation to
our insured and claimants

Updating the Mainframe• Checked claims for errors (example:
checking closed subclaims where the paid did not equal the incurred)
• Transferred adjuster diaries for claim adjusters moving around the company
• Added data to claims such as a “special code” for a particular type of winter storm loss
• Purpose: Ensuring data accuracy in the Claim System and monitoring unprocessed transactions for financial impact.
Investigating System Errors• Made comprehensive list of mainframe
errors and solutions to those errors• Purpose: A reference for the Claims
Department and a training tool for new hires
• Identified claims with documents that weren’t showing up
• Purpose: Trying to determine the root cause of this error and demonstrating the problem to IT
Creating a Claims Marketing Piece• Collaborated with fellow intern Matt
Huss• Created a video in Windows Movie
Maker promoting the claims department
• Purpose: A marketing piece for our agents and agent customers that conveys the reliability, responsiveness and culture of our Claims Department and Company

Bonus: Improving Claims Management Excel Efficiency
• During first week, Saw co-worker having to protect and unprotects 150 excel sheets one at a time
• Leveraged internet research, found a way to protect or unprotect all documents simultaneously though Excel’s “visual basic” code
• Purpose: Saving co-worker valuable time that would have otherwise been spent protecting/unprotecting spreadsheets
Summary• I have worked on a variety of different projects from report
generating, to mainframe updating, to creating a marketing piece
• OBIEE knowledge and my work in the Claims System Administration department will be helpful in my pursuit of a degree in Management Information Systems
• This whole internship has been invaluable work experience• Overall, I’ve had a great time this summer
