CASTRO URDIALES
Castro Urdiales is situated in the most easterly end of the Cantabrian coast, surrounded by impressive coastal landscapes full of steep cliffs and beautiful cosy beaches. It has prehistoric remains of great interest as well as a rich two-thousand-year-old history connected with the Roman Empire, given that present-day Castro lies over the ancient settlement of Flavióbriga, which was part of powerful Hermandad de las Cuatro Villas de la Costa del Mar until the end of the 19th century.Fishing, whaling and trading port, this seafaring town is one of the most dynamic cities in Cantabria. Nowadays the sea is not as important for the economy of Castro as it was in the past, but its seafaring atmosphere is without a doubt the most characteristic feature of the city. In the streets, especially in the vicinity of the port, it is still possible to breathe the air of a fishing town and taste many of its gastronomic specialities, all of them coming from the sea. When visiting this town, an important summer destination since the late 19th century, it is possible to enjoy its modern infrastructures combining perfectly with the charm of the old town, its beautiful avenues, its arcades full of typical bars and interesting constructions that rise up as majestic lookouts of the town. The tour around the seafaring town starts in Cotolino Park, located in the easternmost area of Castro Urdiales. Leaving the park behind, we find the long promenade, which runs along much of the town and culminates in the popular breakwater. As soon as we start walking it, we see one of the most beautiful beaches in the town, Brazomar, and very close to Chalet of Sotileza we find the Palace-Castle of Ocharán. If we continue along the promenade we come across the pier of Don Luis, where the Solarium has been built. We can continue with our tour while enjoying the Cantabrian Sea and all the residential constructions that started emerging in the 19th century. We reach the pier of Eguilior, where Amestoy Park is located. Right after this park stands Castro’s Puebla Vieja, where visitors can enjoy its typical seafaring atmosphere and its popular buildings.
