La segunda ley de la termodinámica enuncia:
NINGUN MOTOR REAL O IDEAL pueden convertir en trabajomecánico todo el calor en el introducido.
Solo una fracción del calor suministrado por la combustión podráconvertirse en trabajo; esta fracción representa el rendimiento térmico del motor .
Podemos decir
El rendimiento térmico ideal es la relación entre la cantidad decalor transformada en trabajo útil y la cantidad de calor suministrada al fluido.

El ciclo Otto es el ciclo ideal de los motores de encendido por batería, las transformaciones termodinámicas que severifican son:
1-2 Adiabática o Isotrópica1-2 Adiabática o Isotrópica (sin intercambio de calor con el exterior) compresión del fluido activo y el correspondientetrabajo realizado por el pistón
