Letter to the Students,

Hope you and your families have been safe! I will take a second to explain my expectations from you kids these next couple weeks while we are still in quarantine. But first, I’d like you to take a minute and appreciate the opportunities you’ve been given and the health you and your families have. That being said, education will always be here for you in every form. I hope you have enjoyed my class thus far. The projects we’ve finished, and the new knowledge you’ve learned about the engineering world out there. I know some of you may not have any interest in pursuing an engineering career, but I am here to educate you and give you the option to have it as a possibility. As for my expectations for the next few weeks, I will be giving you assignments to do at home followed by an end of the six weeks exam. All our work has been hands on, project based, and group activity work. But I’d like you to begin doing these assignments on your own.

Your first 4 weeks’ worth of assignments will be online using a website called www.futurelearn.com you will create an account using an email, password and select age 13. Find “Begin Robotics” using the search bar. It is a free course by the University of Learning. I will also create a small packet the school will issue to you on campus you will have to pick up, I will include a calendar for you to log when you begin your work and log when you finish, all I need is a time started, the date and the time you finished. Take your time on each assignment, there are quizzes at the end of each week. If you have any questions or need help on any assignment you can use the app Class Dojo. Download it to your phone or log in on a computer, and we can talk there. Set up your Portfolio and keep look out for assignments and due dates.

I am not sure if we will ever see each other again, but just a small thank you for being great students to me, and I hope I have been a great teacher for you. If you ever need someone to talk to, and help with anything in the future my personal email is [email protected]

Continue on your life in education and never forget where you came from. Many great people flourish in the RGV and move on to bigger and better things. Leave your mark on this world and live the life you love.

With Love,

Ms. Guerrero

Letter to the Parents,

I have been asked to create a packet for your child to complete over the next six weeks. I will try and be as simple and explanatory as possible, it will be similar to our classwork at school. Your child should still remember the routine I had implemented. As far as contact with me or any questions you may have, I set up a classroom online using a phone application called Class Dojo, a lot of the idea schools use this. I will also create a calendar for your child to stay on track and complete his/her work on time.

Please download and sign up on Class Dojo, it’s a phone application we can use to communicate and keep track of the work I assign the kids. I have set up classrooms to enter based on the period your child has Robotics. I am hoping your child has mentioned this class to you at least once over the last few months, but here’s a little background about this class and myself:

My name is Zenaida Guerrero, I am your child’s Robotics teacher at CFT STEM Academy. I have a Bachelor’s in Architectural Engineering and a Master’s in Civil Engineering. I worked for the City of Weslaco before I came to CFT. The purpose of this class is to give children at the junior high-level exposure to the engineering field. This class is a high school credit class for your child. It qualifies towards their Early College Credits and will positively benefit your child by giving them a taste of the engineering field. It is a difficult class, but I try and tend to the full spectrum I have of kid’s learning abilities. This class is named Robotics; however, I have taken more of an Intro to Engineering based curriculum for this course. My initial plan was to teach half a semester of engineering and half a semester of robotics.

I am missing two (2) weeks of the engineering portion of my curriculum, which will be included in this packet; for the remainder of the few weeks, I will be assigning online curriculum for Beginner’s Robotics via a website online robotics course by the University of Reading www.futurelearn.com have your child log in, create an account with an email and password then select age 13. Search for the course “Begin Robotics” with the search bar and begin as soon as possible.

At Edcouch-Elsa High School, the students have opportunities to continue studying engineering with some classes offered, as well as an STC program in getting their associate degree. I, myself am a graduate of EEHS Class of 2013, I graduated with an associate’s in Engineering from STC. The program helped me financially, and of course made me college-ready out of high school. I cannot stress how rewarding it has been these past few months seeing these kids challenged and overcome every single project, assignment, and problem-solving group activity I have given them. I’d like to give you an idea of what we’ve covered during this class’s first semester.

Course Work

1st Six Weeks During this time, I spent introducing the kids to engineering, I gave a presentation on different types of engineering, and issued an activity where the kids had to identify world-wide issues such as oil spills, sewer spills & flooding based on a small paragraph describing a negative environmental outcome. I also introduced Ozobots, these are are small color code reading robots that move based on the color of line you draw and can perform tricks.

2nd Six Weeks Ozobots were used for a few assignments, the students were placed into groups to create a city for the ozobot to visit through. I also assigned another project, to create a board game using ozobots. Then we moved into Civil/Architectural engineering as I introduced Engineering Drafting Skills and how to properly draft floor plans. Which was then the next assignment, to create floor plans.

3rd Six Weeks From the floor plans we created; the students then learned to visualize the 2D floor plans into 3D homes. The major project was to construct their drafted floor plans into home models using glue, foamboard and xacto pens. Coinciding this project, I introduced a computer aid software called AutoCAD to the students. This is an engineering program that licensed professionals use to create real construction plans.

4th Six Weeks As the students progressed using AutoCAD, we had final presentations to administrators of our house models and the floor plans completed on AutoCAD. Our next major project was learning about famous bridges in the world, the students created PowerPoints choosing a type of bridge they wanted to try and construct out of popsicle sticks. The students did extremely well on this project and again, presented to administrators and faculty.

5th Six Weeks During this last few weeks, we were in class, the students began to learn about how gravity and friction effect moving objects, such as cars on bridges. Our next project was construction a roller coaster made out of household materials or straws. Through the last week of school before spring break, the kids finished the project and I input grades.

Week 5 - Assignment #1

Problem Solving

Upload your answers to your Class Dojo Portfolio or a picture of your work using journal or post a picture of this page completed.

Scenario #1: You are an engineer exploring Antarctica. It’s freezing, ice is everywhere. You are here because the polar bears are dying. You are trying to find out why. Their main source of food are seals and walrus from a nearby place. About 1,000 miles south you see some very dark ice, almost black. And a very musty smell in the air.

• What is the problem in this area, why does it smell musty and why are the icebergsblack?

Scenario #2: In a small town nearby, you get a phone call to help figure out why people are calling and complaining about a smell coming from the community park. You drive by the park to find out what the citizens are talking about. Following the smell, you find a large field of grass is dead, and full of gunk that may resemble paper-like characteristics. The smell is very strong and could be the cause of the dead grass. Nearby is a restroom area that seems very dirty, and not kept up with.

• What kind of problem could cause bad smell, dead grass, and a trail of paper-likegunk?

Scenario #3: In the City of Houston there always seems to be illegal dumping. The City officials try to give our citations to all people they can catch. In one particular gated community, there is no illegal dumping happening. Yet it always seems to flood when heavy rain comes. The streets are always flooded, the houses are always getting water inside of them.

• List 3 reasons why this little community MAY be flooding because of?

Week 5 Assignment #3 – PowerPoint on Flooding Issues

City Engineers face many problems, problem-solving skills are essential. Engineers must always design and build for disaster events. In the valley, we must design for hurricanes and flood events. Has your home ever been affected by either of these two catastrophes?

Assignment:

About 7 slides minimum, not including the cover page.

Begin with your name, the period you have this class and a title as Assignment 3.

For this assignment, the student will use google slides, or PowerPoint to create a slideshow. The slideshow will compose of three parts:

Part I – Provide 3 examples of how flooding can affect you and your family using real pictures from the web. Give a slide name, and a few bullet points to describe the picture you add to the slide. (3 slides) must include 1 picture each. And 3 bullet points for each picture.

Part II – Flood Project Interest

Students will research how some cities reduce flooding. How do the engineers help with flooding issues? What kind of project would you be interested or like to design to help prevent flooding? Provide 1 project idea and how it would help reduce flooding. Add to the end of your PowerPoint from Part I. (1 slide) Include 1 picture and an explanation of project idea.

Part III – FEMA

Students will research the agency FEMA and give 3 examples on how this agency helps people who have become victims of environmental disasters. Add to PowerPoint after Part II. (1 slide minimum – 3 slide maximum)

Once completed, upload the file to your Class Dojo Portfolio or you may simply email or share the file to my email. [email protected], In the subject use ROBOTICS XX PD. – ASSIGNMENT 3 - YOUR NAME and send.
