On the occasion of the International Art Fair ARCO 2011, the Canal deIsabel II exhibition hall is showing the multimedia work Travesías byDaniel Canogar.
This video installation, which was conceived to be exhibited at theheadquarters of the Council of the European Union in Brussels duringthe Spanish Presidency of 2010, can be enjoyed by all Madrilenians andvisitors to our city.
In this cutting-edge production, the gigantic screen unfolds vertically, whereas in Brussels it was arranged in a predominantly horizontal mannerwith respect to the oor.
Technically speaking Travesías is a screen of LEDs, measuring 30 metreslong and 1.65 metres wide. It makes a waving shape in the air that is veryattractive to behold. This long and narrow sculptural piece resembles awinding path on which images appear and disappear.
The video presented shows micro-narratives or actions captured with adigital video camera, some of which were presented in Brussels, andseveral others of which are shown expressly for this venue. These actionsare a metaphor for the obstacles, conquests and risks that every humanbeing confronts over the course of his or her life.
In a parallel manner, another four newly created installations will beon exhibit at the Canal Foundation. Through these installations, DanielCanogar invites us to reect on water as an element that is essential tolife.
Given the innovative nature of this installation, we have chosen toinclude in the catalogue a wide selection of images of the assembly andproduction process of the piece.
Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964) is an artist with extensive internationalacclaim, specializing in photography and video sculpture. His works havebeen shown at the Hamburger Bhanhof of Berlin, the Museum of NaturalHistory of New York, the Andy Warhol Museum of Pittsburgh and the MuseoReina Soa of Madrid. His work is represented by the Galería Max Estrellain Madrid, the Galerie Guy Bartschi in Geneva, Bitforms Gallery in New
York and Mimmo Scognamiglio Arte Contemporanea in Milan and Naples.
I am convinced that this work by Daniel Canogar will serve as a tributeto and reminder of those who designed and erected the Canal venue, whichwas originally the Canal de Isabel II of Madrid’s rst elevated watertower and whose centennial is commemorated as it is upheld as a landmarkof Spanish industrial heritage.

Daniel Canogar’s technological sculptures are always challenging for
those of us who wish to reproduce them in books and catalogues. This is
especially true of Travesías given the complexity and dimensions of the
piece. Therefore, we chose to produce exhaustive documentation of the
entire process of constructing and mounting the work. This documentation
includes both a visual narrative and an interview with the artist.
This interview took place one afternoon in late December at Daniel
Canogar’s studio-workshop, where different pieces had just been conceived.
Inside the studio there were all sorts of objects: enormous black rubbish
bags, a metal tube sculpture, plastic water bottles oating in space,
a profusion of lm boxes, DVDs with their reecting surfaces…I realized
that one of the things that always strikes me whenever I encounter one of
his works is how materially and visually powerful it is. Ever since his
beginnings I have always enjoyed seeing, on the most unexpected surfaces,
glimmering lights, images, streaming sparkles and echoes of bodies that
trap the spectator’s eye and leave a trace of its message on the retina.
In the case of Travesías, we will have an opportunity to enjoy powerful
imagery of the body along with innovative use of new technologies.

Alicia Nieto: De manera general, lo
primero que me gustaría pedirte, para que
el lector sepa de qué estamos hablando,
es una descripción material de la pieza
llamada Travesías:
Daniel Canogar: Travesías es una
pantalla escultórica realizada
con LEDs sobre una malla metálica
exible. Si pusiéramos en el suelo
esta pantalla escultórica y la
extendiéramos linealmente mediría
30 metros de largo por 1,65 metros

montados sobre esta malla metálica
exible, nos permite dar una forma
ondulante a la escultura.
Alicia Nieto: The first thing I’d like to
ask of you, so that readers will knowwhat we are talking about, is an overall
material description of Travesías.
Daniel Canogar: Travesías is a
sculptural screen produced with
LEDs on a exible metal mesh. If we
were to put this sculptural screen
on the oor and extend it linearly
it would measure 30 metres long
by 1.65 metres wide. Moreover,
since the LEDs are mounted on this
exible metal mesh we can give the
display a sinuous shape.

0 1 / 2 0 1 0 - 0 6 / 2 0 1 0 - T r a v e s í a s

A.N. What is the process? How do you
come to think of a piece with these
characteristics?
D.C. Basically by spending a
considerable amount of time in the
space the piece was conceived for,
in this case the atrium of the
European Union Council. I wanted to
feel that space and observe how it
was used. That’s how I always work.
I really like to dialogue with
the spaces I exhibit in, calmly
observing them, feeling them, so
that the conception of the work
virtually arises on its own. Every
place has a different feel to it,
and that’s what eventually gives
me the basic notions of what the
work will ultimately become. Inthe case of Travesías I observed
the path taken by the politicians
and government employees—those
who set in motion the workings
of the European Union—across the
atrium from the street toward the
building’s main entrance, a linear
two-way path. I wanted to create
a playful, more whimsical, version
of this linear and uninspiring
path, and that’s how the idea of
an undulating pathway emerged, a
pathway that oated over the heads
of the users of the space. As I
said before, I really like to feel
spaces. In this sense, the Canal de
Isabel II is a venue I know well,
one that fascinates me and that I
have come to know over the course
of many years.
A.N. Has expuesto ya allí, ¿verdad?
D.C. Sí, fue una exposición
comisariada por Rafael Doctor,
que creo, fue también su primera
exposición, si no me equivoco.
Se llamaba Impuros: una muestra
colectiva importante para mi. Había
hecho algunas otras exposiciones

anteriormente, a una edad más
temprana, pero esta fue mi carta de
presentación al público de Madrid.
Viendo esa muestra con distancia,
estaba ya bastante denida mi
aproximación a la imagen fotográca
y la utilización del espacio
expositivo. Al recibir la invitación
para presentar Travesías en la sala,
inmediatamente caí en la cuenta de
que era necesario replantear la obra
de una forma totalmente diferente
a su presentación en Bruselas,
dejando atrás su inicial disposición
horizontal para aprovechar la caída
vertical en el hueco de las escaleras
del antiguo depósito de agua.
A.N. You’ve shown your work there
before, haven’t you?
D.C. Yes, it was an exhibition curated
by Rafael Doctor, which I believe
was his rst exhibition, if I’m not
mistaken. It was called Impuros, a
group show that was important for
me. I’d had some other exhibitions
previously, at an earlier age, but
this one was my formal introduction
to Madrid’s art scene. Considering
this exhibition in retrospect,
my approach to the photographic
image and the use of the exhibition
space was already clearly dened.
When I received the invitation to
present Travesías at this venue, I
immediately realized that it was
necessary to reconsider the piece
in a completely different way than
that presented in Brussels, leaving
behind its original horizontal
arrangement to take advantage of the
vertical opening in the stairwell
of the former water tower. 1 4 / 0 1 / 2 0 1 1 - I n s t a l a c i ó n d e l t r u s s p a r a e l e v a r T r a v e s í a s e n S a l a C a n a l d e I s a b e l I I / T r u s s

A.N. We aren’t used to seeing works of this type—we are confronted by a singlepiece that weighs around 1,000 kilos. The first thing that comes to mind is the
sheer amount of energy and numbers of people who have had to collaborate in the
production of your piece. How do you go from thinking up the piece to producing
it?
D.C. This is a surprising process, going from a scribble on a sheet
of paper to a looped paper strip, and then a few months later, seeing
an artwork weighing a ton hanging in the atrium of the European Union
Council. I have art journals, like this one in my hands, full of photos,
drawings and press clippings that I collect over time, which are actually
sketches for possible future pieces. It’s fascinating for me to witness 0 9 / 2 0 0 9 - B o c e t o i n i c i a l d e T r a v e

how some of these sketches, sometimes after years, are materialized and
become reality. It’s magical to observe the transition from the original
idea to the nal outcome of the work. In the case of Travesías it really
astounded me to see the nal piece and recall its humble origins as
pencil lines on a scrap piece of paper, a truly unforgettable experience.
The origin of artwork is a mystery, perhaps one of the most interesting
questions about the creative process.
A.N. It’s also mysterious to be able to turn these ideas into a reality, don’t you
think?
D.C. The greatest difculty lies in believing in these ideas, because
they are intangible and very primitive at inception. Sometimes the most
difcult thing is to have faith in those ideas, to nurture them, to 0 9 / 2 0 0 9 - R e c o r t a b l e e n p a p e l d e T r a v e s i a s e n B L I P L t d . , e n L o n d r e s / P a p e r c u t o u t o f T r a

resist dismissing them too soon
and to give them an opportunity to
grow little by little. The initial
idea is followed by the rst
tests; you observe the results,
eliminating what doesn’t work,
stimulating what does, carrying
on to make a second prototype,
and so on until the nal execution
is accomplished. Many pieces are
given up along the way; others make
it to the nish line. This process
is a leap of faith, because you
don’t know whether the project is
going to turn out well or be a
total failure. You have to dive
in, and trust that it’s going to
take you somewhere, regardless of
how many obstacles you encounter
along the way.
A.N. ¿Quiénes te han ayudado
–colaboradores, productores, actores,
especialistas, ingenieros…-?
D.C. Bueno, hay muchos colaboradores
en un proyecto de esta envergadura.
Por un lado está la producción
del vídeo, del rodaje. Me gusta
colectivo social. Y aunque parezca
contradictorio con esta idea de
lo colectivo, me gusta trabajar
con gente cercana que tengo a mí
alrededor: familiares, amigos,
artistas, etc. Nunca trabajo con
modelos profesionales. A veces

A.N. Who has helped you: collaborators,
producers, actors, specialists,
engineers?
D.C. There are many collaborators
in a project of this scale. On
the one hand there is the video
production, the shoot. I like to
work with crowds, creating settings
with many characters whose number
allude to the social collective. And
although it may seem contradictory
to this idea of the collective, I

close to me, people I have around me: relatives, friends, artists, etc. I
never work with professional models. Sometimes these sessions, which are
a little like performances, occur spontaneously: once, as I was teaching
a graduate class, I invited all attending students to a photography
session in my studio, and that’s how the series Enredos came about.
For Travesías I created a Facebook event and sent messages to my email
contacts and some 150 people showed up at the studio the day of the shoot.
On the studio oor I created a green platform with the same dimensions as
Travesías’ screen, in order to use the chroma-key effect that allows you
to separate the background from the recorded gures. An overhead camera
captured various actions that I directed throughout a full day’s shoot.
Then began the post-production process, during which I collaborated with
the talented video-editor Azucena Giganto. In parallel, London-based BLIP
was constructing the screen, with its team of engineers and experts in
video-mapping for LED displays. All this was done in collaboration with
SEACEX at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Spanish Government’s
Presidential Ofce, both organizations teaming up to coordinate the
project. In short, there were many collaborators, to whom I am extremely
grateful.
A.N. What images are we going to be able to enjoy on this display? What isTravesías
conceptually about?
D.C. One of the themes I wanted to address was the idea of a path, not a
straight at path, but one with ups and downs and a spiralling loop, a
manifestation of the winding road we all take in life. The images rendered
on the screen are very gestural, capturing bodies making an effort in the
act of moving forward. In the presentation at the Canal venue, there is a
forceful verticality to the piece, so I am also including sequences that

convey notions of ascent and descent. There will be playful moments when
the screen is treated as if it were a big slide in a water park, followed
by other more dramatic moments, with sudden falls and steep climbs. These
are allusions to well-known pictorial subjects that belong to the history
of art and that we can nd on the surfaces of vaults and frescoes in
religious architecture. I am interested in technologically renovating
these subject matters, and bringing their symbolism into a contemporary
context, where the religious ideology has been replaced by perpetually
imbalanced economic and political systems.
Volviendo a tu pregunta, Travesías responde
A.N. The use of new technologies is a constant in your work. How do you contextualize
this piece within your professional career?
D.C. Travesías emerges from a passionate desire to transcend the traditional
representational framework of a projected image and of the rectangular
screen. My entire body of work, from the beginning, is an attempt to
transcend the photographic and video frame, and a desire to break free
from the constraints of the Renaissance window of representation in order
to take the imagery to a more sculptural realm. In the case of Travesías,
by placing the LEDs on a exible mesh, I convert the video screen into
textile. I am very interested in the relation between textile and videoimage. In both cases an image is woven with interlaced movements. Travesías
is an electronic textile. To get back to your question, Travesías is a
response to the desire to give the video screen a sculptural and exible
form. I am compelled to remove the image from the at surface of the
white wall, and in this sense the installation alligns with a constant
throughout my artistic career.
A.N.: The piece is controlled from London via the Internet, but if the connexion wereto be interrupted, the piece would have to be reset and the exhibition space would
have to be momentarily closed. The installation is very powerful, yet very fragile at
the same time…
D.C. That’s the great paradox of technology; it is so ubiquitous in our
everyday lives, and yet when it fails we realize how vulnerable we are.
It’s an interesting aspect of technology: we feel totally dependent on
it, but when we don’t have it, we realize we can live without all these
technological connexions.
Travesías’ remote access fascinates me. It mirrors the way our society
decentralizes and distributes information online. We’ve abandoned the
classic conception of the machine, with its motors and connecting rods, to
assimilate another type of artefact whose functioning is highly abstracted
through digitization. There are no clear borders between what is present
and what is remote. In this light, Travesías is coherent with the current
times.

subió a su posición nal a 8 metros 1 3 / 0 1 / 2 0 1 1 - D e t a l l e d e l a p a n t a l l a d e L E D s e n S a l a C a n a l d e I s a b e l I I / D e t a i l o f t h e L E D

A.N. At the Canal venue Travesías is going to be a totally different piece from that
shown in Brussels. How do you deal with it in this space? What changes have you
had to make?
D.C. Mainly changes in the animation, in the video that is going to be
seen on the display. The piece is a low-resolution screen, and that means
that there are elements of abstraction and guration with which I want
to engage with. Unlike in Brussels, where the piece was oating 8 metres
above the oor, here the work is going to be physically very close. When
spectators are in close proximity to the screen, they will be bathed by a
strong, almost blinding light, and will thus experience light in a very
physical way. To a certain extent, their interpretative capacity will be
thwarted. However, by contemplating the work from one oor to the next,
for example, they will gain distance from the display, thus being able to
read the video images. The opposite usually occurs: we see things betterthe closer they are. With Travesías, at the Canal de Isabel II, I want
the public to swing back and forth between discovering angles that enable
them to decipher the piece and other moments of pure sensorial experience
of light.
During the Brussels installation, for a day and a half the screen was 50
cm from the oor. This allowed me to contemplate it with considerable
physical closeness and enjoy its luminous power. When the piece was raised
to its nal position 8 metres high I missed this closeness, which we
recover at the Canal de Isabel II. I am really looking forward to seeing
how the public enjoys a more direct contact with the physicality of the
piece.
acercarnos a ello.
A.N.: It’s a piece that is physically and technologically impressive and yet at the
same time people can touch it. Does it have a human scale?
D.C. Very often monumental works seem forbidding and don’t compel us to
get close. With Travesías I hope the physical proximity will also be
transmitted as emotional closeness to the work. It’s important that the
work contacts the oor of the exhibition space, as if to invite the viewer
to climb up its luminous pathway.
A.N. Given the dimensions of the work, it will certainly be an engaging experience,
even involving a physical (not only visual) commitment on the part of the viewer,
for the screen will project light on the viewer. How do you assess this aspect?
D.C. In my work I’ve always been interested in breaking with the viewer’s
passivity. We are used to being comfortable and physically passive when
contemplating moving images, whether in a seat at the movie theatre,
on a sofa watching TV, or stooped over the computer. Among the aspects
that most interest me of installation art is being able to see a piece
from varying angles; that movement around the work enables one to have
multiple experiences of the same piece. I’m really pleased, referring
back to Travesías, about how the public will be able to see the piece
from different levels, from the lower oor to the third oor, and vice
versa, thus acquiring a complexity of perspectives that a quick glance
cannot provide. Human beings have an innate curiosity to explore space,
and this dynamic and perpetually changing view is what I want to recover
with Travesías.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/daniel-canogar 18/26
He
A.N. In such a dark and vertical space as the Canal de Isabel II venue, what effect do
you believe the piece will have?
D.C. Viewers usually surprise me by reacting in unpredictable ways that
I never imagined, and this I nd very interesting and enlightening. My
initial intent is to transmit unease, a feeling of effort and vertigo,
followed by other more playful moments of pure delight, playing with the
big slide that Travesías has become. On the other hand, I’m interested in
exploring the most basic element of the electronic image: the red, green
and blue of the digital pixel. These colors are not only detected in the
points of light that make up the screen, but in large sweeps of red, green
and blue that are a part of the video created for the piece, and that run
over its surface like large luminous waves. The RGB image has been a great
tsunami that has overrun our society in recent times; our everyday reality
is teeming with millions of digital screens and TV monitors. I want to
put forward a meta-linguistic reection about this new RBG condition of
visual representation. I belong to a generation of artist-photographers
who began with analogical technology and then halfway down the road had
to join the digital age. We have witnessed the digital revolution as anenormous wave that has swept away the world of images with which we began
and totally changed our contemporary visual culture.
I don’t want to be the ultimate owner of the symbolic interpretations of
the work. I see art as a medium, and as such it mediates between human
beings. This mediation should be two-directional: therefore I’m always
interested in listening to potential readings the public may make of
the piece. If any of these surprise me and lead me to see the work in a
different way, I’ll feel that Travesías has taken on a life of its own,
and that will be a great satisfaction for me.
