UNIT 1

1. READING COMPREHENSION

Read the text. Answer the questions. Write complete sentences.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS

My favourite place My favourite place is near my house. It’s a small sandy beach with a lot of big rocks. When I’m feeling worried about something, I always go there because it’s very relaxing. It’s a place where I feel really calm. I usually sit on a rock and look at the sea. I sometimes see an old man, taking his dog for a walk, but usually I’m the only person. You can’t often swim there because the water’s quite cold. But in summer you can take your shoes off and walk on the sand.

My favourite person Apart from my family, my favourite person is my best friend, Mandy. My first impressions of Mandy were a bit negative, but she’s a warm, sensitive person. Mandy is someone who always listens carefully to me. She’s never moody or tense. She understands me and we laugh a lot together. Mandy and I don’t go to the same school, but we live in the same street. I often stay at her house at the weekends. This weekend we’re going to the cinema.

My favourite thing My favourite thing at the moment is my MP3 player. An MP3 player is something you use to download music from the Internet. It’s not very big, and it’s something which I always carry with me. I usually listen to music on the bus when I’m going to school. Then I don’t feel bored. I don’t use my MP3 player at school, but I use it at home while I’m doing my homework.

UNIT 3 1. READING COMPREHENSION

Read the text and correct the sentences.

Smoking causes many diseases like lung cancer, bronchitis and heart disease. Cigarette

smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals. Many of these chemical products are bad for

our body. The three worst ingredients in cigarette smoke are nicotine, carbon monoxide and

tar. Tar is a black, sticky liquid that is used to build roads. You can’t see tar in cigarette

smoke but it is there and it goes directly to your lungs. It often causes cancer.

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas which takes the place of oxygen and causes heart

problems. Nicotine is no better as it is addictive. This means your body starts to need it.

Nicotine makes your heart go faster than it should.

Teenagers sometimes start smoking because they think it makes them look older. Now that

you know how bad it is for your health, the most intelligent decision is to say ‘no’ to smoking.

Smoking is more expensive than buying CDs and, of course, more boring than listening to

music. Don’t smoke! Buy new CDs instead and listen to them!

Jessica I’ve always loved ballet. When I was little, I went to the theatre with my mum to watch famous ballets. I loved the atmosphere of the theatre, and all the costumes. Then I started dancing when I was six. I’m fifteen now, so I’ve danced for nine years. It’s quite challenging, but I really enjoy it. I practise every day, and I go to ballet classes three times a week. I’ve competed in some dancing competitions, and I’ve won two trophies. I want to go to ballet school in London next year. I loved the film, Billy Elliot, because I understood the passion and commitment of the young Billy. I want to dedicate myself like him to ballet and then perhaps one day I’ll be a famous ballerina!

Toby I’m crazy about motocross. I was fourteen when I started riding a motorbike. My parents thought it was just a craze, but now I’m seventeen and I’ve won the Regional Youth Championship. I’ve always loved riding bikes. I learned to ride my first bike when I was only four, and I haven’t stopped since then. Motocross is really exciting, but it can be dangerous. You must wear an approved helmet and special clothes. I’ve had a bad accident. It was two years ago, and I broke my leg. I was in hospital for three weeks. But then I continued riding. I can’t live without it! When I’m not riding, I chat on the motocross forums or go to the competitions. We discuss how to choose a bike, which bikes are the best value and share information about the best off-road trails.

1. READING COMPREHENSION.

Read the text about the future of Britain and answer the questions with complete sentences.

THE FUTURE OF BRITAIN

By the year 2050, the world will probably be hotter, and in some places a lot wetter. There’ll be heavier rain in many countries and also higher temperatures. Some scientists say that the climate in Britain will change so much that we’ll be able to grow exotic fruit and vegetables. But on the other hand, other scientists say that we’ll have a new ice age. They say temperatures will be colder and winters will be six months long. Who do you think is right?

Scientists predict that computers will control our cars, our fridges and our washing machines. Our cars, trains and planes will talk to us – they will tell us where to go and how long it will take to get there. Our cars will even drive for us.

They say that we won’t read newspapers or books anymore. We’ll get our news from the Internet, and our mobile phones will be the most important thing we have. We will use our mobile phone as a camera, a diary, a TV and much more.

Robots will probably do all the household chores, such as making dinner, cleaning and even cutting the grass. Do you think you are ready for 2050?

UNIT 8 1. READING COMPREHENSION. Alan Thompson is going to spend six weeks in the beautiful forests of Sri Lanka looking after baby elephants. Read Teen Travel’s interview with Alan and then answer the questions.

Wildlife Conservation in Sri Lanka Why are you having a gap year? I think you should do something before you go to university. You shouldn’t stay at home, you should travel and meet other young people. I’m interested in working with animals so I decided to go to Sri Lanka as a volunteer. What will you do there? Will you have any free time? Yes, I hope so. I think I should take some books because there’s no TV.

What will you do after you finish? You have to stay for six weeks and then you can travel around the country. But, you don’t have to stay in Sri Lanka, there are other countries you can visit. I’ll probably travel around with some of the other volunteers. I’m really looking forward to it!
