Geothermal energy

Rationale: • Geothermal energy has great untapped potential for diversifying the

energy mix. • "Shallow geothermal": retrofitting existing installations with improved

technology; • Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS): reduction of drilling costs and

risks; demonstration of viable technologies to create new reservoirs.

Basic research

• Upscaling technologies currently at lab-scale - LCE-6-2017

Advanced research

• Improving borehole heat exchanger (shallow geothermal) – LCE-7-2016

• Materials for geothermal installations (deep geothermal) – LCE-7-2017

• International cooperation with Mexico (deep geothermal) – LCE-23-2016 (EUR 10 million)

Demonstration

• Geothermal systems for retrofitting buildings – LCE-17-2016 (EUR 8 million)

• EGS in different geological conditions – LCE-18-2017 (EUR 10 million)

Market-uptake

• Tackling bottlenecks for high penetration – LCE-21-2017

• Accelerating the penetration of heat pumps for heating and cooling – LCE-21-2017

LCE-06-2017: New knowledge and technologies – New renewable energy technologies. The challenge is scale up energy technologies currently in development at laboratory scale. Move technlogy to TRL 4.

EU grant requested: 2-4 M.€

Geothermal energy - RIAs

Budget 2017 : 20 M.€

LCE-07-2016-2017: Developing the next generation technologies of renewable electricity and heating/cooling For 2016: “Shallow geothermal (low temperature)-Improving borehole heat exchangers”. Develop new materials and systems to improve the efficiency of borehole heat exchangers by increasing the heat exchanged with the surrounding ground or water – make geothermal sources for H&C more economically atractive.

For 2017:” Deep geothermal (M-H Temperature)-Materials for geothermal installations”. Develop new materials and systems to increase efficiency and longevity of the installations, by securing the integrity of the well and of the equipment, with particular reference to the pumps.

Move technologies solutions to TRL 4-5

EU Grant Requested: 2 to 5 M.€ Budget 2017: 66,5 M.€

20 (29/02/2016)

Geothermal energy - IAs

LCE-17-2017: Easier to install and more efficient geothermal systems for retrofitting buildings. The challenge is to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of geothermal systems for H&C in individual installations being retrofitted. (existing type of buildings)

TRL 7 shall be achieved at the end of the project.

EU grant requested: 5-8 M.€

Budget 2017: 8 M.€

LCE-18-2017: EGS in different geological conditions Test EGS systems to ensure reservoir productivity in different geological settings and energy production at competitive costs. Proposals could propose up-scaling existing EGS systems.

TRL 7 shall be achieved at the end of the project.

EU grant requested: 6-10 M.€ Budget 2017: 10 M.€

21 (29/02/2016)

Geothermal energy

LCE-23-2016: International Cooperation with Mexico on geothermal energy. The challenge is to increase knowledge and expertise to reduce technological and social risks associated with the development and exploitation of EGS and superhot geothermal fluids.

The development of unconventional geothermal systems such as EGS and superhot geothermal resources needs further validation and demonstration in specific high-temperature geological environments. Mexico is chosen for testing and developing these technologies further in a relevant geological environment.

From TRL 3-4 to TRL 4-5

EU grant requested: around 10 M.€

Budget 2016: 10M.€

LCE-21-2017: Market uptake of renewable energy technologies The challenge is to remove environment and social concerns that pose barriers limiting the contribution of geothermal energy to the energy mix.

EU grant requested: 1-3 M.€

37 (29/02/2016)

Caso de éxito: Proyecto CHEAP-GSHP

Aiming to reduce the total cost of low enthalpy geothermal systems by 20-30 %, the project will improve actual drilling/installation technologies and design Ground Source Heat Exchangers (GSHE’s).

This will be combined with a holistic approach for optimum selection, design and implementation of complete systems across different underground and climate conditions
