 As a cleanroom user, you must followall of the rules listed in the manual.

If you fail to follow these rules

consequences will happen - includingthe potential loss of cleanroom access.

Cleanroom Access

To enter the cleanroom you need tocomplete: General Lab Safety Training (DEHS)

Hazardous Waste Safety Training (DEHS)

Cleanroom Access Training (This) followed by aSafety Quiz you MUST pass

Process Specific Training (Provided byCleanroom Staff)

You must train for specific processes and machines -instructions on how to set up training sessions are inthe manual (pg 7).

 All rules must be observed by allpersons qualified to work in theCleanroom.

Remember that not following theserules can result in the loss of cleanroom privleges!

Cleanroom Safety

Must be qualified to enter 

Log all use of equipment

No nonessential items allowed in cleanroom

Check for contamination on gowns and PPE Must be certified user to use equipment

Review MSDS sheets for chemicals youmay use

NEVER WORK ALONE!!!!

Cleanroom Integrity

No Food or Drinks, Smoking, Gum or Pencils

No unnecessary items

 Avoid sneezing and coughing No singing or whistling

Do not enter HPM room or Service

Corridor (except in emergency) Clean up after yourself!

 Appropriate Attire

No makeup

No Contacts (can cause eye damage)

Full length pants must be worn at all times

No open toed shoes - whole foot must becovered

No muddy shoes

Bunny suits, safety glasses, booties, hair 

nets, mustache/beard nets and gloves mustbe worn at all times!

Hours of Operation

Open 24/7 every day of the year unless maintenances or unforeseencircumstances require a change.

Staff maintain business hours of Monday through Friday 8:00 AMthrough 5:00 PM with exception of UofL Holidays.

Remember, you can never workalone!!!

General Rules for Working with Chemicals

Must read MSDS before using chemical Know if chemical should be used in plastic or glass

container 

Label all mixtures

Wear appropriate protective equipment

Use dedicated baths, beakers, etc. only as they aredesignated

Do not work with acids or bases in solvent hoods

Do not work with solvents in the acid or base hoods

Keep gloves dry and clean

Open only one bottle at a time. Pour carefully.

Define all bottles

Put cap back on!

General Rules for Working with Chemicals

Do not pour chemicals back into storage bottle

Take proper percautions when mixing chemicals

 Always use caution

Do not leave chemicals unattended

Follow all percautions when heating chemicals Rinse gloves before putting back - if stained throw

away

Do not wear safety apparel outside of wet bench

area (exception is chemical spill or HAZMATconditions)

Make sure PPE is clean and dry when done

 Always clean up work area!

Minor Chemical Spill on a Person

Run affected skin under water for 15minutes.

Have a buddy call for help - Call PoisonControl at 502-589-8222 and Staff 

(Numbers posted near phones incleanroom).

Remove jewelry or clothes contaminated bychemical.

 After washing DO NOT dry skin.

Follow poison control¶s instructions. If ER trip is needed, call 911 and bring the MSDSfor chemical.

Major Spill On Skin

Stand under shower and remove allcontaminated garments and jewelry.

Have buddy call 911 for help. Request

an ambulance. Bring MSDS toemergency room.

Chemical Splash in Eyes

Flush eyes with eyewash fountain for 15 minutes.

Have buddy call 911 and request an

ambulance. Bring MSDS to ER.

For Buddies

If you see someone under the safetyshower (or distressed in any other way) you automatically become their 

safety buddy. Be sure you are wearing proper 

protective apparel.

First Aid for Other (Minor) Incidents

Chemical Inhalation Check area for safety, close open containers, move victim

to fresh air.

Extreme situations - Call 911, resuscitate with rescuebreathing, give shock prevention treatment

Chemical Ingestion - Go to Emergency room or call poison

control Thermal Burn - Immerse area in cold water (or running water)

until pain stops. Cover with sterile dressing. Call 911 if severe.

Bleeding - Hold clean pad on wound and apply pressure. If bleeding is excessive, doesn¶t stop or is from deep wound

seek medical attention. Clothing Fire - Douse victim in safety shower or smother with

fire blanket.

 Always call for help before giving first aid!

Hydrofluoric Acid (HF)

HF is a very dangerous chemical for severalreasons. If contact occurs follow stepspromptly! IMMEDIATELY rinse affected skin with water 

Remove all clothing exposed to HF while rinsing

Have buddy call 911 and request andambulance and HAZMAT teams

 After washing 5 minutes, DO NOT dry skin

Cover the entire affected area with Calcium

Gluconate gel. Use a double-gloved hand to doso.

Continuously apply fresh gel while on the way tothe ER and while waiting

Chemical Spills

Simple spills do not spread rapidly, are nottoxic, do not endanger people or property(except by direct contact), does notendanger environment outside of building

and is less than 1/2 a gallon of liquid. Large spills spread rapidly, are toxic,

endangers people or property, endangersthe environment outside of the building

and/or is more than 1/2 a gallon of liquid. If large spill, press the HAZMAT alarm and call

911, then evacuate the cleanroom, warningothers as you leave
