Morgan (1997:347) suggests that to understandmanagement and organizations we must realizethat:
Organizations are many things at once
They are complex
They are paradoxical
Thats why the challenges facing management
are often so difficult
-
8/2/2019 CICL Presentation
31/34
He goes on to propose that understandingmanagement and organization has much in common
with the old Indian tale of the six blind men and theelephant.
The 1st man feels a tusk, claiming theanimal to be like a spear. The 2nd, feeling the
elephants side, proclaims that it is more like a wall.Feeling a leg, the 3rd describes it as a tree; and a4th, feelings theelephants trunk, is inclined to thinkit like a snake. The 5th, who has seized the
elephants ear thinks it remarkably like a fan; andthe 6th, grabbing the tail, says it is much more like arope.

Challenge ofMetaphor

One danger is that our imageof organizations tends to beuni-dimensional: by
focusing on one aspect, wefail to understand the whole,
and are thus blind topossibilities and
potentialities.
