CHILE

OF F ICIAL SELECTION

A young couple fights to maintain their relationship following the death of their child. This immense pain has fractured them in the deepest way, and despite how much they love one another, they can’t rise above this great loss. We experience the subtle construction of new lives, and observe their movements in forgetting what they were, but the possibility of a new encounter appears and they know that this decision could change the meaning of their lives forever.

“The film began with the question: What would happen to a couple if an atomic bomb was dropped on them like the death of a child? From there, we worked on the script with Julio Rojas for 3 years, and my main tool was asking myself what would happen to myself in that situation. Thus I sought to give complexity to the story from the perspective of loss, something much denser than a break up. It wasn’t easy, but I’m happy with the result; I think it’s my best film”MATÍAS BIZE

Two women are living together in a small town in southern Chile. Rosalia dreams of her life partner Juan, now deceased, and Laura dreams of becoming a car mechanic elsewhere. Their daily life shows us a world in which women represent good and evil, religion determines people’s lives and social hierarchy is not challenged.

“‘Legacy’ is a documentary film, which deals with the power of culture and tradition. Through a simple and subtle observation one invites the viewer to see the world and its logic from the perspective of these two figures. The film does not intend to evaluate a given life, faith or community. It rather wants to show two women whose dreams and intimate experiences portray their world”. ROBERTO ANJARI-ROSSI

After his teenage gay son suffers a violent attack, Juan, a withdrawn manager at a mannequin factory, struggles between paying his son’s exorbitant medical bills and a last attempt at becoming partners with his boss. As he runs into dead-ends and unexpected betrayals, he’ll discover the world he thought he knew is ready to be violent with him too. Juan has already made too many mistakes, but his son might still be saved.

“About three years ago, a 20-year-old boy was murdered in Santiago because he was gay. He was tortured for hours: his legs broken, a swastika carved on his stomach using shattered bottles, a piece of his ear torn off. By coincidence, that young boy wasafanofmyworkasamusicianandI knew who he was because we’d spoken a couple of times. I met his family and they urged me to continue “speaking on behalf of boys like him,” not usually represented in the media or even art: in short, a gay and poor kid” ALEX ANWANDTER

Lucas is visiting his sister on a remote island in southern Chile before moving abroad. An unlikely romance grows when he meets Antonio, a struggling young fisherman. The intimacy they share makes them navigate towards a new horizon and to a different stage of their adulthood.

“‘San Cristóbal’ is a realistic and emotional film. I want people to get involved and recognize aspects of themselves in the characters, who grow together and find a deep connection. I wanted to observe the tension and prejudices that Lucas and Antonio could encounter in a rural part of Chile, but with a closer look on how they overcome them together.”

My oldest uncle is a schizophrenic and also a chronic smoker. My grandmother’s lungs started to fail due to the cigarette smoke, so she was forced to move in with one of her daughters. Since then, my grandfather has had to take care of my uncle all by himself, being a silent witness of the imminent death of his beloved wife.

“The inspiration to create this work was born from my necessity to dignify the image of my grandfather. He’s the strongest, most ambitious person, whom I really admire greatly; therefore I always felt that his story had to be immortalized because it’s not a story that happens often” MIJAEL BUSTOS

It’s 1996 and Rodrigo (18) is coming back home after getting arrested and booked by the police in a televised raid in the club where he worked as a drag queen, fearful that his mother and sisters will see him on the evening news. While his sisters are getting ready for a wedding party, he plans to run away with his love partner Mauricio (48), a hairdresser who is a friend of the family.

“My intention resides in rescuing a history that is mostly unknown in Chile, and from this point to talk about the world of drag and LGBT from an intimate perspective, which separates itself from both moral

critique and victimization”. IGNACIO JURICIC

In a desolate island in the south of Chile, intrigue invades a lonely farmer after discovering the disappearing of one of his lambs. Convinced that an intruder prowls around his territory, he cruises the island incessantly only accompanied by his faithful dog. However, as the hunting endures, insecurity and oppression begin to dominate the restless search.

“Native to the south of Chile, I’ve always been surrounded by minimal stories that possess a great depth for the protagonist. The idea of Hunter is to depict the life of the deep South through a simple conflict; solitary, cold, and pragmatic”.

Laura, a heartbroken teenager from Santiago is on holiday in the southern Chilean archipelago of Chiloé with friends. As she wanders the lonely island seascapes she encounters a group of local seaweed collector women, with whom she shares places and stories.

“Chile Factory was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had. During a very hot Chilean summer, I had the chance to share with a group of tremendously precious and interesting people, with whom we formed a completely heterogenic and at the same time, very united family. In that rich and multicultural environment, the pleasure of shooting a film was like a dream that came true. I will always be grateful.”.

Ricardo Piglia, one of the great storytellers of Hispanic language, returns to Argentina after living many years abroad. For the first time, he begins a thorough review of the 327 notebooks that constitute his intimate diary, a record of more than half a century. Andrés Di Tella joins that process for a whole year, creating a kind of film journal.

“The idea emerged from a challenge: Why not film the cinematic “diary” I’ve always wanted to make, but stemming from the diaries of Piglia? Piglia always liked risks, in literature and in life. And it was a risk to expose himself like that, but there’s no doubt in the testimonial value that will come from leaving a record of a time in the life of a great writer, and a very special time, dealing with the revision of his own life, mediated by the lectures of his diary of fifty years.”

Lalo and Roberto’s grandfather gave them one last mission: to take care of Elephant, his beloved horse. When Elephant is kidnapped by a member of a traveling circus, the boys end up embarking on a wild adventure. Finally, the determination of Lalo and Roberto to rescue their grandfather’s horse turns into a much grander quest that either could have ever imagined.

“‘Un caballo llamado Elefante’ arises from two childhood stories that were told to me by Lalo, brother of Violeta Parra. Only 10 years old and accompanied by his 8 years old brother, both ran away with the circus. It seemed to me that the audacity and bravery of these brothers was an opportunity to construct a film in the key of children’s adventure with the particularity of being Latin American”. Fernando is married to Alma, a woman with bipolar disorder, which kicks him out of the house because he learns that he no longer supports. When Alma meets a young Argentine, Fernando reacts and finds still in love with his wife. But it is too late, because she has gone to Buenos Aires. Determined to retrieve, search and travel to convince her that she is his soul mate.

“In ‘Alma’ I was interested in approaching, in a comedic tone, the fact of loving someone with a serious psychological problem. The question that the film poses is: Is love enough to live and coexist with someone who will never be cured?”.DIEGO ROUGIER
