FOREWORD
This atlas is an other result of Evolution, Composition, Structure and Dynamics of the Colombian Crust Project, which started in 1997. The chronostratigraphic correlation chart is a powerful tool for integrating regional knowledge of the tectothermal events which occurred in a given region making possible the paleogeographic reconstruction of terrains. With level modifications and inclusion of new terminology during the recent years, the basic concepts of the cronostratigraphic correlation chart are the same of the Walter’s law which was explained more than 100 years ago. For the construction of a chronostratigraphic correlation chart the best lithological, paleontological and chronological information, is required in order to obtain the lateral and vertical lithological variations during geological time. Vast lithological and paleontological information used in this work comes from the “Facies distribution maps of Colombia through Proterozoic and Phanerozoic” and the “Upper crust models of Colombia”, both studies were carried out by INGEOMINAS during the last four years. Better knowledge of lithology, chronology and paleontology as well as continued tectonic regional analysis will sustain better knowledge of temporal and spatial relationship among the different body rocks and its relation with tectonic events. Future advances in regional mapping as well as geochronology and paleontology data adquisitions promise to provide even more accurate stratigraphic interpretations.

ATLAS ORGANIZATION
In order to facilitate its reading, all chronostratigraphic correlation charts of the present work have been organized as follows: the lower part of the cross section contains the chart number, graphic scale, location map, regional geological cross section (based on Upper crust models of Colombia) and geographic features of both starting and ending points of the section. Geographical distribution of each terrain cut by different chronostratigraphic correlation charts is shown in Figure 1 (new version of Geological Terrains Map of Colombia at scale 1:10’000.000) and a brief description of each terrain lithology and evolution events is made in Table 2. The left side of each chronostratigraphic correlation chart, shows a stratigraphic chart based on the last version of the International Stratigraphic Chart. The cronostratigrphic units are showed in each chart separated by environment and age, they are in agreement with all interpretations contained in the “Facies distribution maps of Colombia trough Proterozoic and Phanerozoic”. The lithostratigraphic units names, environment, lithological description and bibliographic reference code used in this atlas are shown in Table 3. The lithology conventions are shown in Table 4 and the environment legend used in all chronostratigraphic charts are shown in Table 5. Finally, the Table 6 show all bibliographic references.

INTRODUCTION
Five major tectosequences bounded by regional unconformities were identified in Colombia during the lithological, paleontological and geochronological integration work (Proterozoic, Lower Paleozoic, Upper Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic.). These tectosequences are associated with collisional and extensional events between North and South America plates, occurring trhough Proterozoic and Phanerozoic times. The first tectosequence which is a union of different tectothermal events occurred during the Proterozoic time. This tectosequence is conformed by: oldest granitic plutons (restricted to the Orinoco region - Rapakiwi granites); mafic (intrusive-extrusive) and trachytic-rhyodacitic volcanism (associated to intracratonic rifting in SE Colombia); metamorphic rocks with granulitic facies (Andean belt) an migmatitic facies (Guyana Shield); low grade metamorphic sedimentary rocks (Guainía and Pedrera Fms.) postdate the latest magmatic activity (1200 Ma) in Eastern Colombia. The metamorphic event suggests a continent - continent collision in the western border of the Guyana Shield (around 1200 – 1300 Ma.) which predates a late Proterozoic intracontinental rifting and westward drift of a continental mass. The second tectosequence event occurred during the Lower Paleozoic time (Cambrian to middle Silurian) and is composed by: Low grade dynamic metamorphism (probably late Silurian) in both the Silgará graben and the NW end of the Güejar - Apaporis graben, and low and high grade metamorphic rocks in the composite crust belt of uncertain age; mafic - ultramafic plutonic and submarine volcanics, isolated ultramafic plutonics and basalts (submarine, intracontinental) and felsic plutonics and sedimentation of up to thousands of meters of clastics (Early (?) Cambrian). Convergent regime ends up in a north-northeast collision suture at the end of the Silurian time. The third tectosequence event was registered during the Upper Paleozoic time (Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous) in the Northwestern corner of South America and is composed by: Thermal and dynamic metamorphic rocks which appear restricted to both western and northern continental plate margins; granodiorite to quartzdiorite in the western margin of the continental plate as well as large scale felsic plutonic bodies (with reset radiometric ages), the Antioquian batholith and the San Lucas granites belong to this magmatic event (Alleghanian collision). During the late Carboniferous-Permian time, delta and delta associated environments develop along the eastern margin of a shallow marine Devonian basin. Further convergence motion (Alleghanian collision) resulted in a two fold tectonic response along the previous continental margin: Westward step of the subduction zone (early Devonian), plutonism and continent – continent collision from middle Devonian until late Permian in the northern half of the new continental margin, and a southward oblique slip transform fault which cuts through and removes early Paleozoic composite crust. The fourth tectosequence event occurred during Mesozoic time (Late Triassic to Early Paleogene times) and it is possible to divide it in to three sequences according to the evolution of the rift systems. The fist sequence (Late Triassic to Early Jurassic) is associated with a major rifting that broke apart the crust added in the above-mentioned collisional event. During the rifting, developing horts and filling by considerable thicknesses of red bed-type deposits and volcanics rocks along the “rift fairway” (pre rift deposition), reaching from Peru to Venezuela. The second sequence (Early

Cretaceous) is subsequent to the pre rift event. Subduction began at the western margin of the continent, this in turn, created a magmatic arc along the eastern flank of Central Cordillera, indicated by an extensive belt of calc-alkaline plutons and a rapidly subsiding back arc basin (thermal subsidence), caracterized by considrable thickness of conglomerates, turbiditic sandstones and shales (synrift deposition). Between 140 Ma and 124 Ma, a major event of accretion added significant quantities of oceanic crust to the western flank of the Central Cordillera (old Jurassic ocean floor), which conformed a regional suture contact between rocks of oceanic and continental affinities (Romeral suture). During the Late Cretaceous, the subsidence rate in the back arc basin is stabilized (post - rift sequence) and the global sea level change extends the initial basin over all directions. This process ended in the Maastrichtian time associated with increasing of the convergence rate between oceanic and continental crust in the west of the Central Cordillera, and affected the continent with incipient folding and faulting. This conditions constrained the thickness and extension of the sedimentary basins from the Maastrichtian up to Eocene times (forced regression), which arecharacterized by parallic conditions (regional coal beds). The last tectosequence event occurred during the Mid - Eocene to Quaternary times and is marked by important episodes of accretion it configured the actual structure of the Continental and Oceanic deformed crusts. The first event is marked during the Mid to late Eocene time by the oblique convergence between Farallones and South America plates which coincides well with an episode of uplift and erosion of basement rocks that generated a regional sedimentation of sandstone and gravels in incipient foreland and piggy back basins. A second event is marked between Late Eocene to Mid Oligocene, involving mainly compression (thick/thin skinned thrust systems) and a thick molasse sequence, consisting of alluvial fan, braided and meandering stream sediments. Within the late Oligocene-Early Miocene time occurs the break up of the Farallon plate in to the Nazca and Cocos plates bounded by an east – west spreading center (Galapagos ridge system). An active magmatic arc developed along the Central Cordillera, which has essentially continued until the present day. This interval marked the subdued first stages of a major mountain building event that commenced in the Late Miocene. In terms of the present day character of Colombia, during the Late Miocene to Pliocene occurs a brief and profundly formative episode. At around 8 to 8.5 Ma collision took place between the Central American (Panama) system and off shore South America, resulting in the accretion of new oceanic material (including Serranía del Baudo). These events were combined to produce a major episode of crustal shortening, very rapid uplift, and volcanism in Colombia. Structurally, the entire cretaceous depocenter within Colombia was inverted some 10 to 20 km, with opposing thrust belts developed along its eastern and western margins.
