The Spanish Blind Sports Federation (FEDC, or Federación Española de Deportes para Ciegos) and the Spanish National Organisation for the Blind (ONCE, or Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles) are together organising the World Blind Football Championship for the rst time in Spain, under the auspices of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA).
This important sporting event will take place in Madrid from 7th to 17th June 2018, and this year will see 16 of the best blind football teams in the world competing for rst place.
Previous events were restricted to 12, or even 8, teams competing in the championship, so this year’s tournament presents an organisational and sporting challenge for Spain.
The schedule is very intense, from the kick off of the very rst match right through to the nal, in order to enable all the teams to play matches. The format is designed to delight spectators who come to see the matches, as well as supporters who want to follow the matches on the television, web and social media.

THE HOST CITYSEDELa
Madrid has been selected to host this championship, and was chosen due to the ease with which it can be reached on any means of transport, especially by plane, as well as for the breadth of its cultural, tourism, gastronomic and leisure offer, and the fact that it has many spaces that are accessible to all.
All the matches will take place in the sporting facilities of the Colegio Sagrado Corazón, with access located on the corner of Avenida Pío XII with C/ Marqués de Torroja de Madrid. The school has a main pitch on which all the tournament’s matches will be played; another where teams can warm up; stands with seating for some 400 people; changing rooms, service marquees, parking places, a press room and other facilities.
Furthermore, the teams will be able to carry out their training programme in the facilities of ONCE’s Sports and Cultural Complex, located at Paseo de la Habana, 208. This centre offers a large number of resources, among them two blind football pitches, a gym, meeting rooms, an auditorium, a covered stadium, etc.
The participating teams will be accommodated in two prestigious hotels, renowned for their quality and their service. These are the Hotel Ilunion Pío XII **** and the Hotel Weare Chamartín ****, both very close to the above mentioned sporting facilities.
The weather during these dates should be perfect for this type of competition, since the temperature oscillates between 20ºC and 25ºC, and the days are very long with plenty of natural light.

¡SILENCIO,JUEGA!
Players who are blind and those with severe visual impairment compete in two different categories which have big differences between them.
Players with severe visual impairment (B2/B3) hardly need any adaptations to be able to compete. These adaptations are mainly directed at ensuring there is a good contrast between the colour of the ball and the ground, the goal and the background, and that lighting of a constant intensity is available throughout the 40 minutes that the match lasts. For this reason these matches are played in a covered stadium.
However, blind football requires a greater number of adaptations, and nowadays is both well developed and well regulated, making it a secure and viable sport for blind players.
The specic indispensable characteristics are: a ball that makes a noise; lateral fences that prevent the ball going out of play (except when the ball goes over them) which also serve as an element of orientation and safety for the player; the goalkeeper is sighted and may only move in a small area within the penalty area; a guide behind the goal orients the players; and players are required to say, clearly and audibly, the word “voy” to avoid blows and to orient the rival player.
Given the specic needs of this modality, it is played on an open pitch with articial grass to facilitate hearing the ball. Spectators must watch in silence while the ball is in play, until a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play.
