En1769,GaspardePortoláysuexpediciónfundaronunpresidio,yeldomingo16dejulio,losfrailesfranciscanosFrayJuníperoSerra,JuanVizcaínoyFernandoParrónalzaronybendijeronunacruz,estableciendoasílaprimeramisiónenlaAltaCalifornia,laMisióndeSanDiegodeAlcalá.

IntheJulyissueoftheBoletín,IwanttoremindeveryonethemostimportantobligationthattheHouseofSpain/CasadeEspañahaswiththeHouseofPacificRelationsandtheCityofSanDiego.

Ourheadquarters,whichweaffectionatelyrefertoas“laCasita,”mustbeopentothepublic

everySundaythroughouttheyearfrom12noonto4:00o´clockintheafternoon.

BalboaParkisoneofSanDiego’smajorattractionsandreceives,especiallyonSundays,bothresidentsofSanDiegoandmillionsoftouriststhatcometovisitourcity.Theparkoffers

museums,theatres,movies,museumofscience,fountains,sculptures,azoo,carousel,achildren´strain,restaurants,

alongwithmanyculturalandentertainingactivitiesonthestreetsandpathsofthepark.

TheHouseofPacificRelations,theorganizationtowhichwebelong,isalsolocatedintheparkandiscomposedofsmallhouseswhichrepresentdifferentcountriesaroundtheworld.ThesehousesmustbeopentothepubliconSundayafternoonsthroughouttheyear.Ineachhousethereareambassadorswhoexplainandexhibittothevisitorsvarious

subjectsthataretypicalofthecountytheyrepresent.

TheCasita,headquartersoftheHouseofSpain/CasadeEspaña,likealltheotherhouses,istobeopentothepubliceverySundaythroughouttheyearfrom12:00noonto4:00intheafternoon.Duringthesehours,theCasitafunctionsasamuseumwithambassadorswhoattendtothepeoplewhocometovisitthehouse.Theseambassadorsarepresentto

answerquestionsaboutSpain,abouttheregionalobjectsthatareexhibitedintheglasscases,nationalfiestas,toshowvideosoflandscapesandmusicofSpain,aswellastoshowourvisitorsthemapofSpainorofsomecityinparticulartheyarelookingfor,totalktothepublicaboutourorganizationandactivitiesandtowelcomethemtotheHouseof

Spain/CasadeEspaña.

ItisimportanttonotethatonSundaysduringthehourstheCasitaisopentothepublictheonlypeoplewhoshouldbeintheCasitaaretheambassadors.Thisdoesn´tmeanthatthememberscannotstopbyastourists,withtheirfamiliesorfriendstoshowthemourmuseum.

Wemayofferlemonade,cookiesorcandiestovisitorsoftheCasita.AccordingtothehealthregulationsoftheHouseof

PacificRelations,wemayofferonlyrefreshmentsandsweetsboughtinastore,nothinghomemadeorpreparedintheCasita.

Unfortunatelytherearestillsomememberswhodon´tunderstandtheroleoftheCasitaonSundaysandthinktheycangettogetherwiththeirfriendsintheCasitaforwine,coffeeorsnacks.Theydon´trealizethatitisimpolitetoeat,drink

andchatwhilevisitorsarepresent.

TheHouseofSpain/CasadeEspañahasactivitiesonotherdaysofthemonthsothememberscangettogethertochat,eatourtypicalfoodsandexchangeideasamongourselves.Allmembersarewelcome:children,youngadultsandolderadults.Whatagreatpleasureforustogettogetherandvisit,butnotonSundaysfrom12:00‐4:00.Onthatdayduring

thosehourstheCasitaisreservedfortheresidentsofSanDiegoandthetouristswhoarevisitingourtown.

SeguramentequesihayungrupoquedebeconocerafondolahistoriadenuestraciudaddeSanDiego,debemosserlos

quesomossociosdelaCasadeEspañaenSanDiego.Lasraíceshispanasdenuestraciudadestánpresentesencadaunadelascallesyplazasdondevivimos,especialmentealrededordeloquehoyllamamos“oldtown.”QuizátodoshemosoídohablardeJuanRodríguezCabrillo,elprimerexploradorquearribóanuestromaravillosopuertoel28deSeptiembrede1542.ComoesedíalaiglesiacatólicacelebralafestividaddelarcángelSanMiguel,Cabrillodecretóqueeselugarseríaconocidocomo“SanMiguel.”Alospocosdías,latripulaciónzarpóhaciaalnorteadescubrirnuevosparajes.NadieseinteresóporestablecerseenesepuertodeSanMiguel.

Añosdespués,en1602,llegóSebastiánVizcaíno,otronaveganteespañolalfrentedetresbarcos.ElcapitánVizcaínoonosabíaonoleinteresabaseguirlasnotasdeldiariodeCabrilloydecidióqueesahermosabahíasedebíallamarSanDiegoenhonordeunsencillofrailedeAlcaládeHenaresqueacababadesercanonizadoporsupiedad,supobrezaysutrabajoenprodelosenfermos.Pormásde150añoslabahíadeSanDiegofueunlugartranquiloadondellegabanlasballenasarecrearseyprocrear.Peroprontolosespañolesoyeronrelatosdebarcosfranceses,inglesesyrusosquesepaseabanporlacostacaliforniana.Creyeronconvenienteestablecer“fortines”y“presidios”paraproteger“sustierras.”Asíenviaronlaprimeraexpedicióndesoldados,acompañadosporfranciscanos,aloquellamaban“AltaCalifornia.”Nosconstaquefueun16deJuliode1769cuandoelprimer“alcalde”deSanDiego,quienluegofueratambiéngobernadordeCalifornia,GaspardePortoláyelPadreJuníperoSerralevantaronunacruzenelParquePresidio,juntoalabanderadeEspañayallíseoficiólaprimeramisaensuelocaliforniano.EstafechaseconsideracomolaverdaderafundacióndelaciudaddeSanDiego.EnesedíaseestableciólaprimeradelasmisionescalifornianasbajoelnombredeMisiónSanDiegodeAlcalá.Loscolonosempezaronallegarenelaño1774,perolosnativosdelazonaserebelaronalañosiguiente.Mataronaunodelosmisionerosyaotrasdospersonas,yquemaronlamisión.FrayJuníperoSerraorganizólareconstrucciónydosañosdespuésseempezóaconstruirunedificiodeadobe.Aloscincoanos,losfranciscanosdecidieroncambiarellugardelamisiónunas6millasaleste,dadoqueenestenuevolugarhabíamasaguaylatierraeramasfértil(ellugaractualdelaMisión).Unanodespuéslosindiosatacarondenuevolamisión,quemaroneledificoymataronalpárroco,elfranciscanoFrayLuisJayme,quienestáenterradobajoelaltardelaiglesiaactual.ElPadreSerraregresoaSanDiegoparasupervisarlaconstruccióndeunanuevamisión.Seedificósiguiendolasespecificacionesdeunfuertemilitar.Losañossiguientesfuerondifícilesaltenerqueestablecerse,ganarlaamistaddelosindiosyconvertirtierrasáridasenlugaresderegadío.Secomentaqueyaenelaño1797secosechabatrigo,maíz,cebada,frijoles,guisantesyuvas,ademásdejardinesdevegetales.Elcensodelamisióndeeseañodicequetenían20,000ovejas,10,000cabezasdeganadoy1250caballos.Recientemente,fueun16deJuliode1993cuandolaciudaddeSanDiegodecidióconmemorardeformapermanentelasraíceshispanasdenuestraciudad.Pararecordarlahistoria,enesedíaseizaron,alsondelosrespectivoshimnosnacionales,enelParquePresidiolastresbanderasquerecuerdanlasculturasquenosunen:Española,MexicanayAmericana.Hastahoysiguenondeandoenunsímbolodehermandadquenosrecuerdaatodoslariquezadeculturasqueencontramosennuestraregión.
