From Disability to Work The British Council for Rehabilitation of the Disabled is to hold a European international study course and conference on this subject from July 1 to 7 at Cambridge University. The Elderly Individual in Modern Society A conference on this subject, organised by the National Old People’s Welfare Council, is to be held from March 29 to 31 in Eastbourne. Nurses’ and Midwives’ Salaries At a meeting on March 13 the management side of the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council refused to improve on their offer of a 21/2% salary increase. The staff side unani- mously rejected this offer. The Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Midwives, and the Association of Hos- pital Matrons, all of whom are represented on the staff side of the council, are now to act on the decision taken at a meeting of trained nurses held at the Royal College of Nursing on March 12, and to seek an interview with the Minister of Health, The National Association of State Enrolled Nurses will be associated with this action. Royal Society The 25 newly elected fellows df this society include two members of the medical profession: Dr. C. E. Dent is professor of human metabolism in the University of London, at University College Hospital Medical School; and Dr. M. R. Pollock is head of the division of bacterial physiology at the National Institute for Medical Research, London. The work of the following other new fellows is closely associated with medical research: . Dr. H. K. F. Blaschko, senior research officer in the department of pharmacology, University of Oxford; Dr. F. R. Parrington, lec- turer in zoology and director of the museum of zoology in the University of Cambridge; and Dr. Nikolaas Tinbergen, reader in animal behaviour in the University of Oxford. Wellcome Trust Applications are invited for the Carlsberg-Wellcome travel- ling research fellowships for 1962-63 and the newly created Wellcome-Swedish exchange research fellowships in medical science for 1962-63. The object of these fellowships is to encourage cooperation, on an exchange basis, between Danish and Swedish and British research-workers in any branch of the natural sciences which has a bearing upon human and animal medicine. One Carlsberg-Wellcome fellowship and one Wellcome-Swedish exchange fellowship annually are awarded to candidates from the United Kingdom for a year’s work in Denmark or Sweden and one annually to a Danish and to a Swedish candidate for a year’s work in the United Kingdom. The stipend may range from S1000 to E2000 per annum (or the equivalent sums in Danish or Swedish Kroner); travelling and some incidental expenses are provided in addition. Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene The Manson medal for 1962 has been awarded to Dr. Edmond Sergent, director of the Pasteur Institute, Algiers, for his researches on protozoa and spirochaetes. Society for Psychosomatic Research Essay Prize for Research on a Psychosomatic Theme in General Practice.-This prize for 1961 has been awarded to Dr. Robert Kellner. The society is offering a further prize of E50, given by the Sir Halley Stewart trust, for original observations on a psychosomatic theme studied in general practice. Respiratory Virus Diseases A course of lectures on this subject is to be held from April 11 to 14 in the department of medicine of the University Hospital, Leiden. Institute for the Study and Treatment of Delinquency A weekend conference on future trends in penal treatment is to be held by this institute from April 27 to 29 in Folkestone. From May 11 I to 13 at Avoncroft College, near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, the institute is to hold a weekend course for psychiatrists on Prisoner or Patient-the problem of the criminal psychopath. The speakers, under the chairmanship of Dr. Donald Mac- millan, will be Dr. H. K. Snell, Mr. Kenneth Robinson, M.P., and Dr. J. L. Clegg. North of England Neurological Association This Association was formed at a meeting held at the General Infirmary at Leeds on March 10. The first president is to be Dr. Hugh Garland, the hon. secretary Dr. J. N. Walton (Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne), and the hon. treasurer Dr. L. A. Liversedge. Member- ship will be open to consultants, senior registrars, and others of equivalent status. The first scientific meeting is to be held at Leeds on Saturday, May 19.
