En este artículo se hacen algunas muy breves reflexiones sobre lasmatemáticas y sus aplicaciones. Se trata de contribuir a contestar lapregunta muy frecuente acerca de lo necesario o no de lasmatemáticas, principalmente en carreras de ingeniería, cienciassociales, ciencias naturales, etc.

La historia de la ciencia muestra claramente que muchas teoríasmatemáticas tuvieron como origen problemas prácticos.

En la actualidad las matemáticas han crecido mucho y se puedehablar de matemáticas puras, como la parte que desarrollateorías para resolver problemas e inventar más teoría dentro delas propias matemáticas.

Sin embargo es posible, tanto resolver un problema de unateoría matemática ya existente, como crear una nueva teoría deun problema práctico. También es posible resolver un problemapráctico de una teoría matemática que haya permanecido comopura durante muchos años. La misma realidad muestra que todateoría matemática es candidata a ser usada para resolver algúnproblemas prácticos.

Por lo tanto, no es correcto preguntarse si una teoría matemáticasirve para algo o no. Sino más bien, lo correcto es resolver unproblema práctico con alguna teoría matemática considerandoincluso aquellas que han permanecido como puras hasta hoy.

No existen teorías matemáticas que son útiles y otras que no.Más bien, algunas se han utilizado, y es un reto usar aquellasque hasta hoy no lo hacen en problemas prácticos.

En la actualidad las matemáticas son usadas en muchas áreasdel que-hacer humano, incluyendo la música, el arte, lacriminología, la política, etc. etc.

En seguida damos una muy breve lista de algunas de las áreas dondese aplica las matemáticas. La pregunta no es dónde se aplican lasmatemáticas, sino más bien, dónde aún no hay matemáticas yentonces inventarlas!!! como parte natural del pensamiento de lahumanidad.

1.- Matemáticas y Criptografía

La criptografía como el arte de escribir mensajes secretos, para quesolo las personas autorizadas puedas conocer el mensaje. Se hadesarrollado a travéz de la historia y desde sus inicios se ha utilizadoteoría matemática. La teoría de números es parte inherente de lacriptografía. A partir de la invención del sistema DH (WhitfieldDiffie y Martin Hellman) y RSA (Rivest Shamir Adleman) la teoríade los campos finitos aparece en criptografía y en los años 80 lascurvas elípticas e hiperelípticas son usadas. Sin embargo muchasotras ramas de las matemáticas son usadas en criptografía como lacombinatoria, la probabilidad, la teoría de retículas etc.
