En el mundo andino, las apachetas son montículos de piedras arrumadas por los lugareños o los viajeros, que a su paso por lugares sagrados depositan piedras unas sobre otras. Este ritual de ofrenda a la Pacha Mama (Madre Tierra) y a las deidades montaña Apus, Achachilas o Hirk’as tiene como propósito propiciar un buen viaje. En muchos lugares, la cruz cristiana se ha sobrepuesto sobre las apachetas prehispánicas.

Una apacheta puede consistir en un pequeño montículo de piedras colocadas unas sobre otras en equilibro, hasta verdaderos túmulos de dos y tres metros de altura. Inspiran respeto y se ubican en lugares desde donde se dominan amplios espacios, cumbres de las montañas, pasos, miradores, etc. Muchos de ellos son parte de paisajes milenarios.
Pueblos, como los inukshuk del Círculo Polar Ártico y otros del entorno de la cadena del Himalaya, también tienen una práctica similar. Algunas vistas de esta presentación corresponden a esos contextos.
