Cnidarios (Phylum Cnidaria)
Oswaldel/a sp. © JAlbum & Chameleon

Parborlasia corritgatus is a scavenger and a predator -vvith a voracious appetite and vvill eat almost anything; its diet includes sponges (including Ho111axinel la balfourensis), jellyfish (shown here ), diatoms, seastars, anetnones, polychaete worms) 111olluscs (including Antarctic scallop Ada111ussiian colbecld), ct.ustaceans, and fish r1.2,5J. P. corrugatus joins in on the f eeding, frenzy when the small seastar Odontaster va/idus attacks en 1nasse the large seastar Acodontaster conspicuus C3J.

Liothyrella uva antarctica is found around Antarctica except the Antarctic Península from 15 to 860 meten; depth [13 ].
L. uva antarctica shell length :is up to two centimeters [I J.
The muricid gastropod Trophon longs llf:.ffi is a predator of L. uva [s).
Liothyrella uva antarctica is benthic, attached by a pedicle, and filters out phytoplallkton íor food [2J. L. uva antarctica has been found attached to stylastedne corals,. principally Errina, and less often to stony bryozoans [I ].

Briozoos (Phylum Bryozoa o Ectoprocta)

A bst:ract :: This stt1dy contains the current list of the austral pycnogonids together with details of their depth ran,ge and clistribution . To date 264 species have been :recorded, aocotmting for 19 .6°/o of the 1344 species recorded worldwide. Onie hundredl and eight species are endemic to Antarctic waters. 62 to the subAntarctic; 63 are common in both regions, and 55 are circumpolar. The richest genus is Ny mphon, with 67 spedes and the richest area is the Scotia Sea. Comparing species lists between the years 2000 and 2007 shows that increasedl ex¡peditions with more sam¡pling has increased the circumpolarity of SJPecies and decreased zonal endemicity. The benthlc insular refuge h.ypothesis is _proposed as an ex¡planation for the souithem distribution oftbe ¡present pycnogonid fa1l1Da, with an origin in fue Scot ia Are.

Abstract: Th:is srudy of the [elationsb:ips beítween the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and Sonth Amer.ica biogeographical regions used both existing and new data. We consit:ructed a presence/ ahsence matr:ix of 237 species for 27 biogeograph ical divisíons which included the Amsterdam-Saint Paul and Tristan da Cunha islan.ds. Species and areas were classified using cluster analysis comlbined with MDS ordination. Six main groups were obtained from the species dassification:. 1) Amsterdam-Saint Paul, and 2) Tristan da Cunha species, 3) spedes from the Macquarie Province, 4) species from the sub-Antarctic Region, 5) Antarctic species and species distributed in the cold regions, 6) South American species. The biogeographical components were dominated by the endemic (although it is not as hlgh as in other groups), Antarctic-South America and Southem Hemisphere elements. Except for Amsterdam-Saint Paul, Tristan da Cunha and Bouveit1 the areas considered were grouped together with Macquarie lbeing rather related to New Zealand regions. We speculate that the Antarctic Region may have acted as an "evolutionary incubator", pmviding a centre of origin for sub-Anta:rctic and South American ascid[ans.
