After its first century of existence, cinema has entered into the 21st century with a horizon that has seemingly transcended its own presence in the lives of its spectators – consumers of audio-visual materials at an unprecedented rate. From its central space of socialization and its cultural nourishment that has provided sustenance for countless societies in the last century, cinema remains relevant: with the nature of its aesthetics, the drive of its narrative – primarily fiction and non-serial – and its virtue of provoking thought concerning human problems, cinema remains a forum of reflection for many people who perceive its consumption, as well as their enjoyment of it in the movie theatre or at home, as a vital need.
Entrusted with meeting its audience, Spanish cinema continues to count on various facets that make its contents an interesting case of cultural and national industry. Aside from the work of young people who dabble with experimental cinema and documentary, fiction remains faithful to the codes of genres that have become an indisputable brand of its imprint. The horror and action films that were incorporated into the international arena in the late nineties have continued their trajectory, often sponsored by television production. This meant the recovery of audiences and the general public, among which are the youth.
Along with this emblem of contemporaneity, Spanish cinema continues to house a space dedicated to comedy. In PELíCULA's slate of films are different incursions that demonstrate the use of distancing, irony, and laughter as means to ponder the identity of the new Spaniards. There is the romantic and situational comedy presented by Hacerse mayor y otros problemas, the reflective and existential comedy of films such as Casi cuarenta, the musical comedy that is La Llamada, and the comedy for all types of audiences such as Campeones, which also aims to normalize the sphere of the disabled. All these films offer an interesting panorama of contemporary humanism, one of the most persistent genres of Spanish cinema.

Along these lines, the most dramatic films also encourage one to think about the difficulty of living in our contemporary societies. These are films made by young filmmakers, producers, and directors, who create a dialogue with realism to come up with current stories, often led by women, such as Los amores cobardes, a youthful narrative, or Carmen y Lola, which dares to enter the taboo of lesbianism and gypsy culture.
In addition, Spanish cinema continues to look after its literary and historiographical traditions. The adaptations of our best authors continue to see their work exemplified in cinema. For example, the film El autor, based on the work of Javier Cercas, is a product of this effort; as well as Memorias de un hombre en pijama, an adaptation of the comic of the graphic artist Paco Roca. In addition, the foray into history – the way in which light is shed on different moments of the past, from other areas and prisms – has recently had two interesting examples, both from the north of Spain: Handia in Euskera territory – not only because of the language in which the film is spoken; and La higuera de los bastardos, which revisits the traces of the Spanish Civil War.
Finally, it is worth dwelling on the spheres that exist close to conventional fiction cinema. The little ones will surely enjoy Atrapa la bandera, with a style that is reminiscent of the best Hollywood animated films but as understood from a European logic. And from the documentary perspective, the approach to the world of dance that Dancing Beethoven presents is celebrated as an authentic aesthetic experience that reclaims the idea of cinema as an art and as a vehicle to show how culture is something more than a heritage of humanity.
In short, Spanish cinema continues not only to demonstrate a versatile capacity in trying to represent the creative reality of its creators, but also shows how their society structures imaginations to best tell its stories. Up to a certain extent, cinema serves as a good example of how to understand the way by which society polarizes its discourses and seeks to

appeal to spectators, increasingly dispersed in different niches and with various expectations when they go to the cinema. On the other hand, cinema does not really intend to be a mirror of reality, for it remains a narrative and and a specular genre that generates fictions and discourses—even in the documentary style—but it certainly has the capacity to offer a window, in this case an audio-visual one, to Spanish culture. Cinema will endure in its way of transcending the context from which it arises and, in this manner, present itself as a way of understanding the world. To a certain degree, cinema still signifies universality in the 21st century.

So far, there is no study dedicated to the reception of the complete work of Ingmar Bergman in Spain. There is, however, an important work by Rosario Garnemark, Ingmar Bergman y la censura cinematográfica franquista (Ingmar Bergman and the Francoist Film Censorship), published in 2015 by ShangriLa, which analyzes the conditions in which certain films of the Swedish director found themselves between the years 1960 and 1967, and which effectively influenced their reception. They were first launched in Valladolid's Festival of Religious Film and Human Values, so the films that were made available for viewing in the sixties were religious in nature, or close to it, while others remained out of the Spanish spectators' reach. With the appropriate edits, dialogue modifications, and sometimes even additional musical scores, the censors Carlos Fernández Cuenca and Father José María Staehlin offered to the Spanish public an image of Bergman that was close to Catholic spirituality, something which critics and some film clubs took upon themselves to amplify. Over time, during that same decade, that image weakened in the face of a new conception of Bergman as an author, rather frivolous, and which identified him with the plot content of his films, especially in relation to family and relationships. Critical of the previous reception which nevertheless left a lingering trail, Juan Miguel Company initiated in 1990 a collection dedicated to filmmakers published by Cátedra, with a volume on Ingmar Bergman: an analysis of the written works of the author, which also goes beyond the critical approaches that, from a superficial criticism of the left, rejected his cinema due to the absence of a clear and straightforward sociopolitical content.

The following lines do not intend to give even an outline of that study on Bergman's reception that we still lack. Rather, they will be notes of my relationship with the work of Bergman, within a generational context focused on the eighties. I was born in 1963, the year of The Silence. For me, a mere child of twelve years from the time of Franco's death, Bergman's name did not begin to ring a bell until 1979 or 1980. For my generation, Bergman's films were part of a sentimental and cultural education still linked to the cineclubs, before they began to disappear. We were the epigones of cinephilia. We watched indiscriminately what was shown in the film clubs of the cities where we lived: Murnau, Renoir, Resnais, Bergman, Nicholas Ray... However, and unlike other filmmakers, there were places where Bergman was well-received and which we found strange. During my first year as a university student in Salamanca, between 1981 and 1983, I was able to see at least The Virgin Spring, The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and Cries and Whispers in the lounges of female residences run by nuns. They were, without a doubt and especially in the case of the first three films, versions dubbed with the intervention of Father Staehlin. Why they even showed Cries and Whispers, I still do not quite understand. In any case, it is a good example of the persistence of that lingering trail to which I referred above. It could not be said that Bergman was omnipresent in the eighties, but it was easy to find every now and then a movie of his being shown in a film club. In the University of Salamanca I was able to watch, for example, The Serpent's Egg, which provoked in me a greater terror than that inspired by Kubrick's The Shining. And then there was television, which showed a cycle in 1986 in its recently released Filmoteca TV
17
program, which I recorded with my brand-new VTR, and which I keep as a treasure—in particular After the rehearsal—because it opened my eyes to a different Bergman who was unknown to me: the director of actors, the theater man. In these circumstances, it is understood that the commercial cinemas also dealt with Bergman. I believe it was in the summer of 1986, and in an open-air cinema in Calpe no less, when I saw Fanny and Alexander one evening when a storm was brewing: the intermittent sound of an empty can blown about by the wind, the storm clouds and lightning bolt—all framed in an impressive way the gloomy life in the stepfather's house, the sinister and ironic magic of the game that resists. The silence of the summer holidaymakers in that setting which would now be difficult to reconstruct paints a picture of what cinema was and never will be again. Symptomatically, it was also Bergman's farewell to cinema—a farewell which fortunately he did not quite fulfill. That messy, chaotic form of reception in which dates and works overlapped, and over which the old censorship still sometimes hovered, was that of our generation—at least for those of us who lived our youth in provincial cities. This was the reason, at least I believe so, why Juan Miguel Company's volume on Bergman was especially welcome. But it also marked

a turning point: the shift of interest toward university specialization which accompanied the end of cinephilia.
Things have changed a lot since the eighties. Images: My Life in Film, and The Magic Lantern have been translated into Spanish, and new translations and studies on Bergman continue to appear. The editorial landscape, particularly on the occasion of the centenary, is becoming vibrant. If the visits of Dramaten to Spain from 1985 onwards barely left a mark beyond the cities where he performed (especially in Barcelona), it is impossible today to understand Bergman the filmmaker without looking to his work as a theater director. This is something very evident in his works for television that, nonetheless, continue to be difficult to access. In a curious twist, the Spanish theater, at least since 2000 when Scenes from a marriage was staged (in the version of Emilio Hernández under the direction of Rita Russek), has recovered on several occasions his cinematographic works for the theater. But that is part of a study about Bergman's reception in Spain which remains to be seen.

The Spanish word “película”, which means film, translates to the Tagalog “pelikula”, echoing the cultural ties shared by the Philippines and Spain. In line with this spirit, since its first edition, PELÍCULA has aimed to put up joint Filipino-Spanish programs. On October 12 & 20, through its “Encuentros en el cine”, PELÍCULA 2018 will offer the similar program "Shorts from the Philippines and Spain". The program will feature ten recent Spanish shorts and will premiere two Filipino short films—The Gathering by Arvin Belarmino, and actor Xian Lim's Our Love Story, his first attempt behind the camera.

Campeones (Champions) directed by Javier Fesser has been one of the most commercially successful films of 2018.
This comedy / drama has become a flagship film for people with mental illness and their integration into sports and society.
Marco (Javier Gutiérrez), the main character, is forced by law to train a group of patients who are part of a basketball team. Although he isn't happy at first, Marco will soon see how much he has to learn from them.
The basketball team members are not played by professional actors, which gives the film an extra layer of authenticity.

Carmen is a gypsy teenager living in the outskirts of Madrid. Like every other gypsy woman, she is destined to live a life that is repeated generation after generation: getting married and raising as many children as possible. But one day she meets Lola, an uncommon gypsy who dreams about going to university, draws bird graffiti, and is very different. Carmen quickly develops a complicity with Lola and discovers a world that, inevitably, leads them to be rejected by their families.

Ana remembers everything that happened since the death of her father twenty years ago. Her nine-year-old daughter believes she has power over the life and death of those who live with her. There is another power Ana believes she possesses: invoking her mother's presence. With her, dead years ago, a relationship full of tenderness and, sometimes, domination conjures.

Near the end of the Spanish Civil War, a “trigger-happy” fascist soldier turns into a strange hermit. He gets caught up in the care of a fig tree after the look in a ten year old child's eyes, the son of one of his victims, awakes in him the certainty that the kid will kill him as soon as he reaches sixteen years of age.
Director Ana Murugarren takes this story as the starting point for a black comedy with dramatic notes. Set in the Basque country, it is remarkable for the acting of Karra Elejalde, one of Spain's finest actors.

La llamada (Holy camp) is a funny, contemporary Spanish musical. Two best friends find themselves at a summer camp ruled by nuns. Choreographed songs and godly interventions join forces in this coming-of-age story about finding your own path far away from conventions. The film cherishes teenage rebellion and freedom. Based on a musical play written and directed by J. Calvo and J. Ambrossi, La llamada has become one of the biggest successes of Spanish cinema of the last few years.

Inspired by the well-known play Blood wedding by Federico García Lorca, La novia is set in Spain, between the 1920's to 1930's, and tells the story of a multi-family, multi-generational blood feud that is about to be settled by a wedding between two of the families. But Fate and Death have other plans as the girl is in love with another man. On the evening of the post-wedding party, the Bride cannot help herself as she and her lover gallop away on horseback leaving the groom behind—distraught and fuming. The two lovers are carried away by their passion, defying all social rules and their own better judgment. They set a chain of events in motion that will have devastating consequences.

Based on the story by the Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte and inspired by the 16th century expeditions, Oro tells about one of those incursions through the Central-American jungle, looking for a mythical city made of gold. The conquistadores, blinded by their ambition, cross lands populated by wild animals, enduring heat and humidity, and are harassed by hostile and cannibal tribes. The promise of gold not only challenges their survival instincts, it also makes them confront their own inner selves as they face head-on the risks they are taking.

Miguel (45 years old) dreams of fleeing to New York. While he waits for his visa, which never seems to arrive, he works as a busboy at a paladar, a privately owned restaurant. Diego (45 years old) dreams of living. Weakened and immobilized by AIDS, Diego remains energetic on the narrow bed, in the smallest room of the house. Diego and Miguel live together as if they were night and day. While Miguel takes shelter, Diego opens himself to others. Diego is gay, positive, gleaming. Miguel is asexual, negative, dark. A wide array of evocative characters surround the two friends but only Diego is aware of Miguel´s intentions. However, destiny has something in store for everyone as they face a surprising and unusual decision.

Professor Isak Borg, 78, is summoned from his home in Stockholm to the University of Lund in southern Sweden to receive an honorary doctorate. He travels there with his daughter-in-law, who feels resentful toward him because his son, her husband, displays all the egotistical traits of the old man and does not want to have children. They encounter three hikers and take them along in the car with them to Lund. While visiting his family's former summer house, Borg is assailed by nightmares in which his failings are brought home to him.

Remains of a shipwreck, reflections of a country in a life that has remained hidden, like an unventilated closet. The voices of two women and the remnants of a house detained in time rescue the memories of those who lived there, as witnesses of the transformation of the property. Who is this man who posed for a portrait on the same day every year of his life?

THE ROUTE OF THE MONASTERIES: THE CRADLE OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE
La Rioja may be Spain´s smallest region, but it is rich in vast landscapes, arts and cultural heritage. La Rioja is also full of history and legends, thanks to their monasteries. In fact, a visit to this region will not be complete without discovering the birthplace of the Castilian language: San Millán de la Cogolla.
It was in the scriptorium of San Millán de la Cogolla where a Riojan monk wrote on the margin of Codex 46, which was written in Latin, and considered to be the first words to be written in Spanish. This small sentence in Romance, explaining the main Latin text, is the first trace of a language that today is spoken by over 400 million people around the world.
In San Millán de la Cogolla, you will also find the Monasteries of Suso and Yuso which is given importance in terms of architectural and cultural heritage and is declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
The richness and tradition of Riojan monasteries is not limited to San Millán de la Cogolla. Many spiritual centers have been maintained as places for retirement, prayer and culture and now became an attractive destinations for cultural, religious and artistic tourism.
These monasteries and surrounding grounds is a sanctuary for relaxation, walks or to simply enjoy the beauty of nature as you enter the cradle of the Castilian Language.
