Definition:
Natural gas hydrates are crystal line compounds formed by water withnatural gases and associated liquids at high pressures and lowtemperatures.
Solid ice-like crystals composed of cages of hydrogen bonded water molecules surrounding/trapping smal l guest gas molecules such asmethane, ethane, propane

The figure belo w overlays a stead y statetemperature/pressure profile for a flowline
on t op o f the hydrate fo rmatio n envelo pefo r the prod uced fluid s. The s haded areashows the hydrate format ion reg ion for 0,10, 20, and 30% methanol.
The f luids enter the f lowl ine at 80F (27C)and approximately 1750 psia (121 bar),outside of the hydrate formation region.
As the fl uid travels through the flowline thetemperature drops and by mile 10 thepotential for hydrate formation exists.
By mile 30 it requires 23% methanol toinhibit hydrate formation.
This an By mile 45 the f lowl ine is reaching shal lower, warmer water and thefluid begins to warm-up.
Between mile 45 and 50 Joule-Thomson expansion of the f lu ids resul ts in atemperature drop. alysis allows one to determine if the flowline will remain out of the hydrate formation region during steady state conditions. It also indicates whatlevel of methanol would be required to prevent hydrates. However, this analysis isstrictly for steady state conditions. For hydrates, the transient analysis provides themore stringent design criteria

10. Effects of Water Compositionon Hydrate Formation
Sal ts inhibit hydrate format ion in thesame manner that sal t depresses thefreezing point of pure water. c.f.salting winter roads.
A produced water analysis wi ll allow aless conservative estimate of thehydrate formation conditions.Standard hydrate predic tion modelscan predict the effect of salts.

10. Hydrate Formation in FlowlinesHydrate format ion in a product ion system can
result in serious, and sometimes fatal, accidents. Hydrate safety problems are causedby three characteristics:
Hydrates have densi ties l ike ice. A dis lodgedhydrate plug can be a projecti le with speeds upto sonic velocity. With these velocities anddensities there is sufficient momentum tocause two types of failure at a pipelineconstriction (valve or orifice) or at a sharp
change in direction (bend, elbow, or tee).
Hydrates can form either single or multiple plugs. There is no method to predict which will occur. Highdifferential pressures can be trapped between plugs, even when the discharge end of the plugs aredepressurised.

10. Hydrate Formation in FlowlinesHydrates contain as much as 180 volumes (STP) of gas per volume
of hydrate. When the plugs are dissociated by heating, anyconfinement causes rapid gas pressure increases which can lead topipeline ruptures

Comparison of Glycols for Dehydration
Glycol Advantages DisadvantagesDEG(Diethylene-glycol)
Cheap Larger carry-over lossLess dewpoint depressionRegeneration to highconcentrations is more difficult
TEG(Triethylene-glycol)
Used in almost 100% of glycol dehydration systems
TREG(Tetraethylene-glycol)
Lower carry-over loss due tolower vapour pressureCan be used on gases whosetemperature exceeds about 50 oC
More expensive

Joule Thompson &Expander Paths
For a given initial pressure and temperature condition the isentropic
path gives a greater temperaturedecrease for a given pressure
change. It also shows that the JouleThompson process requires morechilling upstream to arrive at thesame point on the dew point curve.
Alternatively, starting at the sametemperature the JT valve processwill reach a lower pressure on thedewpoint curve and will require
more gas compression.

Selection of the refrigerant is generally based upon temperature requirements, availability, economicsand previous experience. Previously used refrigerants, HCFCs (Hydro-chloro-fluro-carbons) and CFCs(Chloro-fluro-carbons)have been replaced with non-ozone depleting HFCs (Hydro- fluro -carbons)refrigerants such KLEA (ICI product). These new products have a lower chilling capacity than earlier
products and therefore larger cooling equipment is required. Other refrigerants which may be used areammonia and propane/butane.
The refrigeration cycle can be broken down into fourdistinct steps;
