South African Scouts support Firefighters

South African Scouts mobilised quickly to support over two hundred fire-fighters and conservation staff during this weekend’s devastating wild fires on the Helderberg mountain that saw eleven houses and a hotel burned to the ground.Scouts, adult leaders and parents from four scout groups in the Helderberg District, Western Cape, South Africa mobilised quickly to support conservation staff and fire fighting personnel during this weekend’s devastating wild fire. After taking the initiative to offer assistance to the Helderberg Nature Reserve, Scout leaders in the district mobilised rapidly to the urgent call for assistance.

The fighting taking place in Libya has pushed thousands to flee the country into Tunisia and Egypt. At the borders, thousands are queuing up, often tired, hungry and thirsty from their journey.Along with several other humanitarian organisations and volunteers, the Tunisian Scouts (Les Scouts Tunisiens) have set up tents and stands close to the border and are distributing sandwiches, yoghurt and drinks to everyone.

"One Scout / One tree" Project

thinking of a simple way to care for the environment and involve Scouts from around the world, Lucas Guilherme a Scout from the Rattlesnake Scout Group in Brazil had the idea to use the Internet as a tool (social networks, email and websites) to encourage every Scout to plant a tree! His whole idea is based on the 7th Millennium Development Goal which is to “Ensure environmental sustainability”.As you will see, it is really easy to take part...

his year as a part of the annual JOTA-JOTI (Jamboree on the Air - Jamboree on the Internet), taking place on the 16th & 17th of October, WOSM will be partnering with UNICEF to develop a platform for young people to express their views. Capitalizing on the tremendous popularity of JOTA-JOTI, which gathers every year more than half a million participants, the goal is to question the youth of today about their motivations and desires. In connection with International Year of Youth that was launched in August this year and the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child celebrated in November 2009, this year’s theme for JOTA-JOTI is “Right to be heard”.Apart from traditional chatting on the Internet - JOTI or radio - JOTA this year Scouts will also use such new media tools as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Flickr as well as UNICEF’s Voices of Youth blog.
