SINOPSE

A identifica5ão de características físicas, para avalia-ção dos fatores fisicos limitantes do crescimento vegetal e classificação para fins de engenharia e irrigação, foi efetuada nos solos das unidades de mapeamento Barros (Umbric Natra-

qualf), Curumim (Arenic Humaquept), Jundiaí (Typic Humaquept)Palmares (Plintharenic Albaquult) e Tuia (Arenic Plinthudult),representativos da região Litoral-Norte do Rio Grande do Sul. O principal fator físico limitante do crescimento vegetal nossolos Curumim, Palmares e Tuia é a baixa capacidade de reten-ção e armazenamento de água, enquanto nos solos Barros e Jun-diaí é a aeração deficiente. A exceção do solo Jundiaí, cuja limitação é forte, os demais solos apresentam materiais com ligeira limitação para obras de engenharia. O solo Barros oferece condições de irrigação na classe 4Rdf, enquanto os de-mais solos sao inaptos para este fim.

SUMMARY

The identification of soil physical characteristics toevaluate the physical factors limiting the growth of crops

4 and to classify the soils for purposes of irrigation and en-gineering uses was accomplished on the Barros (Umbric Natra-qualf), Curumim (Arenic Humaquept), Jundiaí (Typic Humaquept),Palmares (Plintharenic Albaquult) e Tuia (Arenic Plinthudult)soil mapping units, which are representatives•of the Northern-Coastal Plain region of Rio Grande do Sul. The major soil phY sical factor limiting the growth of crops in the Curumim, Pal mares and Tuia soils is the low water retention capacity andstorage , while in the Barros and Jundiaí soils is the insufficient aeration. Except for the Jundiaí soil, in which the limitation is strong, the other soils have materials with slight limitation for engineering uses. The Barros soil offerscondition of irrigation in the 4Rdf class, while the other soils are not suitable for this purpose.
