For Haller the H orrib le, the quizzes, the advice on colleges, a shoulder to cry on, the giggles and weary looks in history classes, the tape-recorded lecture, the showers in girls' P.E. and "M rs . English, I can't take a shower to d a y . . . , " for the smile to depend on, English the Excruciating— not to m ention those dearly-beloved-by-one- and-by-all English the Excruciating Events— fo r the understanding and sympathy and encouragement, fo r being you . . . ,

We, the class o f 1970, wish to thank you, Mrs. Christine English, in our small way by giving to you this yearbook.

MEMORANDUM TO: The S t a f f o f the 1970 Phoenician

SUBJECT: Your Unique Challenge

FROM: John I. Y e l l o t t , Headmaster

In the o r i g i n a l L a t i n , memorandum means someth i nq wh i ch must be remembered,and t h i s communication mentions matters which you should bear in mind as yougo about the myriad tasks invo lved in the product ion o f a yearbook.

1. Whatever appears in p r i n t a u to m a t ic a l l y acquires f a r g re a te r importancethan i t s su b je c t mat te r might j u s t i f y i f i t were l e f t in manuscr ip t.The f a c t th a t a sentence has been se t in type and, by one process oranother , p r in te d on a p re v io u s ly b lank page, gives f a r g rea te r weight to your words than you may r e a l i z e when you w r i t e them. Hence, givec a re fu l thought to what you put in t o your one e d i t i o n o f the Phoenic ian.Someone w i l l read i t a centu ry from today.'

2. Pr in ted words take on permanency as w e l l as a u t h o r i t y , so, a f t e r you have chosen them w i t h care, sp e l l them c o r r e c t l y . The typographer 's work must be checked c a r e f u l l y , f o r there are g re m l In s (1ook them up in your F. and W. .') l u r k in g in the l in o ty p e machine, w a i t i n g f o r a chance to turn your prose or poetry in t o "e to a in s h r d lu " or i t s e q u iv a le n t . Proofread your copy w i th care and then do i t again whenthe ga l le ys a r r ive . '

3. Someone o f note is reported to have said to a newspaper re p o r te r : " I care not what you w r i t e about me, but sp e l l my name c o r r e c t l y . " In the Phoenic ian, your readers w i l l care what you w r i t e about them, and they w i l l be e s p e c ia l l y s e n s i t i v e about m isspe l led names and in c o r re c t capt io n s under t h e i r photographs. Make sure th a t the names and faces agree, p a r t i c u l a r l y on those crowded pages where the p ic tu re s o f the l i t t l e people appear, and when they are grown to man's and woman's e s ta te ,they w i l l r i s e up and c a l l you blessed.

k. Future genera t ions o f PCDS people - s tuden ts , parents and f a c u l t y - w i l l form t h e i r op in ion o f the Class o f 1970 from th is e d i t i o n o f the Phoenic ian, because i t is yours , so labor d i l i g e n t l y w i t h ta s te , humor and imaginat ion in i t s c re a t io n . Your predecessors have set a high standard in the f i r s t f i v e Phoenicians, so w i t h your worthy t r i u m v i r a te in the lead, f a l l to work and l e t the b i rd f l y to new heights th i s year.'

By the gong of tim e you live.Listen and hear tim e saying you were silent

long before you came to life and you w ill again be silent long after you leave it, why not be a little silent now?

Hush yourself, noisy little man.Time hushes all.

The gong of tim e rang fo r you to come out of a hush and you were born.

The gong of tim e w ill ring fo r you to go back to the same hush you came from .

THE W ORD BEFORE GOOD-BYE

W hat is the springtim e after all?O nly the o ther side of fall.O h, if I could have I'd have made you a sunny sky.Hello 's the w ord before good-bye.Sometimes it rains, sometimes it shines yet the things I want are seldom mine.

How much of summer can we hold before we tu rn and find we're old?The things our m irrors tell us are all lies Hello's the word before good-bye.Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's fair yet when I go home at n ight nobody's there.

Perhaps the next w ind that blows in Wel| you see it,s |jkethisw ill bring you back to me again.T ill then rem em bering just makes me want to cry.Hello 's the w ord before good-bye.Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win yet I can't forget what m ight have been.

Dear P.C.D.S.,Many thanks fo r le ttin g me com e to spend a w ho le year

in Phoenix. I can certa in ly say tha t I really love this place. The nature is beautifu l, the people are nice to me, and a nice fam ily have I go t to stay w ith du ring these m onths.Even if the school is harder than I supposed i t to be, it Such a stim ulating clazzzzzz.w ill give me an experience 1 never w ou ld have a chance to get back later in my life. You pupils o f P.C.D.S. should be proud o f be longing to a school like this. Not all schools have teachers w ho show so much interests in the ir pupils as P.C.D.S. None o f us are grow n up yet, even if we th in k so. W e are n o t qualified to take the responsibilities o f what we do. Therefore it is good to have teachers w ho are able to lead us up to the age where we understand what education means fo r ou r fu tu re , Uusally, the young people do n o t discover this before it is to o late. Think about it, and do n o t let bad ideas in fluence you !

I w ill give a special thanks to those w ho have showed and show me and my Swedish friend Bjorn Larsson atten tion . B jorn and I really en joyed the river tr ip righ t after school started, even if o u r “ s tum ps" became sore.It was really an experience.

I learn from raindrops on a w indow , each one rhythm ic in the sun.A bundle of roses and a sp irit backstage, know ing an experience, songs o f o ther men's raindrops, sitting in a fie ld in an aftermath.Albatross and the black forest, circles of inner tubes,Betsy' fo rt, laughter from Snow-bowl forests,Jennifer's wall, letters in my own fum bling , bum bling way, the Knight of Swords' odyssey. So all my songs are ra indrops— reflections reaching fo r Suzanne's hand, searching fo r that unfound door.

Dear Fox, o ld friend, thus we have come to the end of the road that we were to go together. M y tale is fin ished—and so farewell.

But before I go, I have just one more th ing to tell you:

Something has spoken to me in the night, burning the taper of the waning year; something has spoken in the night, and to ld me I shall die, I know not where. Saying:

"T o lose the earth you know, for greater knowing; to lose the life you have, for greater life; to leave the friends you loved, fo r greater loving; to find a land more kind than home, more large than earth—

" —W hereon the pillars of this earth are founded, toward which the conscience of the world is tending—a w ind is rising, and the rivers flo w ."

For the seven years I have spent in P.C.D.S. I have little to say. W ow! W hat a neat place! was what I thought back in the sixth grade, but I soon found it was practically like any other place. M idd le School was just one place for industrious study and offered little in possibilities.

Upper School came and I fe lt that a new spark had come in to life, but I was soon disillusioned by fa lling grades and endless review. But in some areas I really excelled except fo r one or tw o drops and new methods of classwork really picked my interest. I discovered new horizons in several places but my age-old way o f math still stuck w ith me.

Now I feel that despite all my problems, my life at P.C.D.S. has been w orthw hile and educational and great possibilities m ight come out of all those underclassmen who are succeeding my years here.
