    Aarne-Thompson

    Aarne-Thompson es un sistema de clasificacin de fbulas o cuentos de hadas.Su primera edicin fue obra del folclorista finlands Antti Aarne, publicado en1910. En 1928 el folklorista estadounidense Stith Thompson lo ampliara y

    completara, pasando a llamarse Aarne-Thompson (AT o AaTh) en su versinposterior de 1961. En 2004 Hans-Jrg Uther ha continuado el trabajo, pasndosea llamar Aarne-Thompson-Uther o sistema ATU.

    Origen

    En 1931 Johanes Bolte y Georg Politva publicaron una extensa compilacin queconsista en un conjunto de detalladas notas comparativas sobre los cuentos delos Hermanos Grimm, llamadaAnmerkungen zu den Kinde- und Hausmrchen derBrder Grimm. Esta obra fue la base de la llamada Escuela Finlandesa, que apartir de la cabeza visible de Julius Krohn, cre el llamado mtodo histrico-

    geogrfico, mtodo cientfico para el estudio del folclore. Su obra la continuara suhijo Kaarle Krohn y ms tarde su discpulo Antti Aarne. El resultado final de esteestudio sera el sistema Aarne-Thompson, una clasificacin sobre los ndices ymotivos de los cuentos populares.

    Desarrollo

    Antti Aarne emprendi con su obra, publicada en 1910, el intento ms destacablede clasificar de forma universal las fbulas folclricas. Aarne se ci a lastipologas de cuentos finlandeses y daneses, junto a los de los Grimm, siendo suestudio slo vlido para la Europa occidental. Aarne compara los cuentos entre

    ellos y establece los tipos: los argumentos bsicos inalterables en la tradicin ycomunes en toda la geografa analizada. Cit 540 tipos, seguidos de un nmero ouna letra o un asterisco.

    En 1928 Stith Thompson aadi nuevos tipos, usando para ello los catlogosparciales que a partir del sistema instaurado por Aarne, aparecieron en otrospases. En 1961 aparecera la obra definitiva, la Aarne-Thompson (AT o AaTh). Adiferencia de Aarne, esta nueva revisin permita estudiar las tipologas folclricasde Asia, y no slo de Occidente.

    En 2004 se publicara una tercera revisin, publicada por Hans-Jrg Uther,

    rebautizada como el ndice Aarne-Thompson-Uther (ATU).Diferencias

    Kaarle Krohn y Antti Aarne distinguan tipo de versin y variante: los relatos cuyassemejanzas son mayores que sus diferencias pertenecen al mismo cuento tipo,pero si presenta variaciones importantes se llama variantes del tipo. Ambos

    defendan la existencia de un arquetipo por cada cuento tipo, la forma primigeniade la que procederan todas las versiones posteriores y con existencia histrica.Thompson diferencia el tipo del motivo, que vendra a ser el elemento comnpresente en toda la tradicin. Expone tres clases de motivos:

    mgicos, creencias, etc. Incidentes aislados

    La tercera clase de motivos sera la ms abundante: cuando tienen existenciaindependiente en la tradicin, coinciden con los tipos correspondientes.

    Se puede dar el caso de que un tipo est constituido por un solo motivo o porvarios motivos relacionados. Adems hay motivos que pueden darse en diferentesclases de cuentos. Por lo tanto, el problema principal a la hora de hacer una

    clasificacin reside en ordenar aquellos cuentos que presentan una serie de variosmotivos, y diferenciar cuales de estos motivos son los principales y cuales losaccesorios.

    Clasificacin

    Hay tres grupos principales de cuentos: los cuentos comunes u ordinarios, loscuentos de animales y los cuentos humorsticos. Aarne-Thompson aadieron dosnuevos grupos: los cuentos de frmula (que siguen un patrn establecido, comopor ejemplo recopilaciones de varios cuentos) y los cuentos no clasificados (losque no se pueden incluir en ninguno de los grupos anteriores). Cada grupo, a su

    vez, se divide en subgrupos:I. Cuentos de animales:

    Crtica

    A pesar de que el sistema AT es reconocido por muchos estudiosos como unaherramienta de vital importancia para el estudio y catalogacin de las fbulas, noha estado exento de crticas u objeciones. La objecin ms importante la realiz eletnlogo ruso Vladmir Propp en el captulo primero de su Morfologa del cuento.Propp critic la catalogacin de los cuentos en tipos y motivos. Se puede leer:

    No se puede determinar dnde termina un tema con sus variantes y dndeempieza otro. [1]

    Los trabajos de la escuela finlandesa parten de un supuesto errneo, en unapremisa inconsciente segn la cual cada tema es un todo orgnico, que puedesepararse de la masa de los otros temas y estudiarse por s solo. [2]

    Otro investigador, Carlos Gonzlez Sanz, tambin critic el sistema Aarne-Thopson porque no define las subdivisiones segn un criterio unificador, demanera que no se explica bien por qu los cuentos de animales se definen por eltipo de personaje, los de la magia por la temtica y en su conjunto la oposicinentre cuentos propiamente dichos y cuentos de frmula sea ms bien formal

    (aunque internamente los cuentos de frmula se subdividan temticamente). Estees el principal error del ndice, que lleva a vacilaciones a la hora de clasificarcuentos que, como el de medio pollo, podran ser de animales, mgico e inclusoformulstico. [3]

    No obstante el ndice de Aarne-Thompson sigue siendo actualmente una fuenteimportante a la hora de catalogar y encontrar fcilmente un cuento y poder rastrearsus variantes a travs de una situacin geogrfica en concreto. Compensa su faltade rigurosidad con una gran utilidad para todos los investigadores de las fbulas ycuentos populares.
