In the beginning when I started to write this essay, I didn’t see it coming anywhere near fruition. I was asked to write about my Na-

tional Service life, one could only imagine the innumerous experiences that I had gathered over the years. The moment I thought of it,

my mind raced back to the very first day it all started: Enlistment Day. The first and one of the two biggest days in your NS life, the

next being your ORD day. Anyway, as my mind raced back in time, I re-membered that tinge of nervousness I felt entering the camp, it felt as if I

was going to prison. My father was right by my side, but the thought of liv-

ing without my parents the thought of suffering engulfed me. I was genuine-

ly scared. To the contrary, by father was genuinely excited and happy for

me. He felt that I would change, finally get up on time, iron my own clothes

from now on and do the household chores etc.… My parents saw this as the

perfect opportunity for me to reform and there weren’t wrong either for hop-

ing as much. I was an 18-year-old kid, spoiled by the comforts of home and

the shelter of my parents. I hardly cared for much in the world and my aspi-

rations were to conquer the never-ending desires of all teenagers. I saw NS

as the perfect opportunity to discover my limits and how far Id end up doing

in the real world. So here’s my story and what I learned most in NS.

I was enlisted into the SCDF and started off as a skinny, unfit and most of

all a lazy recruit who hated being in camp. I was posted to the National Ser-

vice Training Institute Basic Rescue Training Center, it required newly post-

ed personnel to go through a 3-month basic rescue training. As I familiar-

ized myself with my new friends and environment, I started to feel much

better, now that I look back and think about it camp life was basically a ro-

botic life of monotonous activities but it taught me things which I treasure

till today. Basically we all had to get up at 4:45 am. Be ready by 5:30 am for our morning routine. The day started with a warm up

which was called 5bx which basically meant 5 basic exercises. After which we had breakfast. Being a vegetarian in camp didn’t help

at all. The food was twice as worse for me compared to the rest. Luckily for me I wasn’t the only one. I had my best friend, Ajay with me. Following breakfast, we had to clean our dorms and toilets, once that had been done there would be a morning inspection by the

instructors. I hated the instructors to my very bones as they found intense pleasure in punishing us. The biggest challenge that I had

faced during my recruit time was my fitness. I wasn’t the most fit person in the world and I knew that but what made my situation

worse was my mental strength was even more worse. Id give up when things got tough and because of this my platoon mates would

get punished for my weaknesses. I hated the push ups and the constant punishments in the hot weather. Challenge number two was

ironing and making my bed. I hated all of it. I hated cleaning as well. I found that to be a meaningless job and frankly not at all im-

portant. Challenge number 3 was liking my training. I hated being in camp and instructors I felt as if I was in prison. I felt that most of

my training was a waste of time. It didn’t improve anything. But nonetheless I had to put up a brave face in order to get through the

day and not incurring the anger of my buddies. They already had put up with my nonsense enough. Every night I would complain to

my mother about how tough things got. She would say it will all turn out for my own betterment and in hindsight, she was right. The

first three months inside camp followed the same routine and it was more of a wake up call to myself.

I thought to myself how could I possibly overcome all of this? At the time it seemed like a mountain to climb. What changed every-

thing was when I was selected to become a section commander. It required me to go through 6 months of Section Commander Course

(SCC), SCC trains firefighters in the Civil Defense Academy to become commanders capable of leading a section( which comprised a

team of firefighters). I was already dreading the three months inside and the thought of going through another 6 months terrified me. I

wasn’t ready for it. Section Commander Course is a 6-month course aimed to make individuals capable of leading a section (a team of

firefighters) in any situation. By the end of the course we are trained to faced a variety of situations. Honestly, the course pushed my

limits, both mental and physical. In those 6 months I made friends for life, I learnt things that I wouldn’t learn normally in real life,

things such as leading my men, taking responsibility, being disciplined and most of all being determined. All these qualities culminat-

ed to that of a leader, a strong willed person. My mental strength grew to heights which even I couldn’t even fathom. Firefighting is

by no means easy. Its all about thinking on the spot based on the situation at hand. As a leader I realized that I that I had to make deci-

sions with the very little knowledge that I had. In the end, I graduated top 10 of my course and being in the shortlist to become an of-ficer (Lieutenant). I became a full fledged sergeant. In the end, I chose to go to the fire station where I could test my firefighting and

leadership skills at first hand where I would get to attend to real life cases of fire and rescue.

My last phase of NS has brought me to Sengkang Fire station. This was where my skills and fitness went to a whole new level. I knew

that I had much to learn when I left the academy. Sengkang is an operational fire station and frankly to say the busiest fire station in

Singapore. We have the most number of ambulance calls in Singapore as well as the one of the highest number of fire calls. Sengkang

is also known for how tough their firefighters are. They are known to be cruel and unforgiving to any new guy who isn’t at the compe-

tency level that one expects them to be at. Naturally, when I came in (Even though I had chosen Sengkang) I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had heard stories in the academy about how

unforgiving their firefighters were and naturally I was scared

when I came in. Nonetheless, I put up a brave face and faced the

challenge up ahead of me, after all I had chosen this fire station, it

was all my doing and henceforth I had no reason to complain.

Naturally, I was wrong and so wrong that I would complain to my

mother every single day. The level of fitness and endurance that

their firefighters had was nothing compared to what we went

through at the academy. I was so scared to come to work every

single duty. Being a firefighter was insanely difficult. In fact,

nothing that I could comprehend inside my head and on top of

that, Section Commanders like me were pushed even further. Luckily, I had my batch mates by my side to go through the suf-

fering and torture. At times I was close to fainting and giving up

after the tough endurance trainings which involved carrying huge

loads of weight in the region of about 50kgs (be it hoses or equip-

ment) while donning our breathing set which weighed 15kgs.

Breathing in them required me to learn how to even breathe dif-

ferently compared to normal breathing! They would not stop the

endurance until or unless one of us fainted and conveyed to the

hospital by an ambulance or we completed the training, it was a cruel way to mold us into better firefighters, one that I call the “Shock

treatment” and frankly, it was the only way. The reason they did all that was for us to not only improve our endurance and fitness but

so that we learn to think in high pressure situations which involved us section commanders to make quick decisions, it was as close to the real situation that we could have been in on top of that I had to learn how to dive and swim. I learnt more skills such as lifting,

rescue methods, firefighting and an intense crash course in leadership of my men. I was lucky enough to have a mentor called Terence

who taught me everything I know today. He made me into a good section commander and I thank him to this day and as time passed

on, I learnt to be more vocal and command and control my men on the ground. I still have a long way to go but I am enjoying each

and every moment in Sengkang as I have found for myself a second home, a second family. I enjoy the fire and rescue incidents that I

attend to, to the station visits every Saturday where the kids and their parents would come to visit our station and learn about our oper-

ations. The most joyful part about such visits is where we would get the kids would get to sit inside the fire engines and play with the

water and hug me for giving me a visit around the station. Coming to Sengkang I’m glad to say I’ve seen both the good and bad of

society. From attending to calls such as fires in buildings to rescuing people who attempt to suicide to seeing dead bodies to rescuing

victims stuck inside manholes and doors, along the way it was heartwarming to hear compliments and gestures of thanks from mem-

bers of public, overall Its been one hell of a ride.

I can say that NS has in no way been a waste of time. It is a long drawn out process for sure but it is surely worth it for anyone who is

willing to go through experiences unlike any other. Not only has my physical fitness increased but also my mental ability, I learned

that any situation can be overcome with the right approach and right mindset. I approach every situation with a positive attitude to-

wards life, I’m not the lazy teenager that I used to be and along the way I picked up a few great skills from fighting fires to rescue to

ironing my clothes and cleaning. Life lessons that would surely help me along the way. I can proudly say that I’ve become a man that

my parents can be proud of, helping them and supporting them in whatever capacity that I can be it doing house chores or paying the

utility bills to managing my own finances. In short I’ve become a man capable of taking care of myself. To sum it up to those out

there wondering about what NS is and whether to serve NS or not, my advice would be to go ahead and serve as you would go

through a myriad of experiences unlike never before and go through the journey of a lifetime.

1. Upon informing us of the birth of the child, the Mother's PRUlink protection plus account coverage will

cease and the child's PRUlink protection plus account coverage will commence from the date of birth of

the child. We will also automatically include Crisis Cover Provider III to the child's PRUlink protection

plus account policy. The PRUlink protection plus account will terminate upon the expiry of 60 days

from the Estimated Due Date of the child if you have not notified us of the birth of the child at that time.

We will require evidence of good health if you notify us after 60 days from the date of birth of the child. 2. The life assured (expectant mother) must be between ages 19 to 45 next birthday and between 18 to 32

weeks of pregnancy. 3. For Pregnancy Complications Benefit, we pay $5,000 upon the diagnosis of any one of the covered preg-

nancy complications. For the Death of foetus coverage, there is a waiting period of 14 days from the incep-

tion date of your policy. This benefit will terminate upon the payment of the sum assured, or when the

child is born, whichever is earlier. 4. For Congenital Illness Benefit, we pay $5,000 if your child is diagnosed by a registered medical practition-

er as having any one of the covered congenital illnesses. The child must be diagnosed with Congenital Ill-

ness within two years from the date of delivery and the child must survive at least 30 days from the date of

delivery with congenital illness. This benefit will terminate upon the payment of sum assured or when

child reaches the age of 2, whichever is earlier. 5. Benefits for the child's PRUlink protection plus account coverage will be reduced if Death and Terminal

Illness occur when the child is age 30 days and below, and for Disability, the benefits will be reduced when

the child is below age one. Please refer to your policy documents for the exact terms and conditions on

"Termination of Policy". Death, Terminal Illness and Disability benefits do not terminate at age 2. 6. Hospital Care Benefit, is only payable if the child is hospitalised in Singapore or Malaysia for the covered

conditions. It will terminate upon the claim limit of $2,500 per life is reached or when the child reaches the

age of 2, whichever is earlier. 7. You must add the supplementary benefit(s) within 12 months from the birth of your child. We provide this

9. The premium is based on a female non-smoker, age 30 on her next birthday.

10. Prudential Singapore reserves the right to vary the monthly administration and assurance charges for the

basic benefits of the Death, Total and Permanent Disability, Terminal Illness and Crisis Cover Provider III.

Junior Protector Plus

Cover your children against accidents, anywhere in the world

Wherever learning and play may take your children, give yourself

the reassurance of Junior Protector Plus. This comprehensive ac-

cident insurance plan for children covers them – worldwide –

against accidents, as well as illnesses such as Hand, Foot and

Mouth Disease (HFMD), Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF)

and food poisoning.

Be reimbursed for medical expenses

Get back as much as S$5,000 for accident-related medical expenses, including treatments by a Traditional Chi-

Receive hospitalisation benefits

If your child is hospitalised due to HFMD, DHF or food poisoning, you’ll get up to S$150* per day, and be re-
