Sound-Film trailers often use dramatic music to convey the genre of horror, The use of dramatic and haunting music is typical of the horror genre and allows the audience to discover the genre of the film through the trailer.

Horror type films often use voiceovers which gives connotations to the audience about what the film contains,

Voiceovers are used to create excitement and tension and are used to leave the trailer on a cliffhanger furthermore the voiceovers is typically used to inform the audience on the release date and positive quotes about the film e.g. “best horror film of 2011”

Disturbing sounds effects are generic in horror, diegetic sounds like creeping footsteps and non-diegetic sounds like a fast heartbeat.

Use of camera

Horror trailers tend to use fast paced shots to create a sense of excitement and tension. it is also used to keep the audience hooked an example of this is A nightmare on elm street.

A modern convention of horror films is Handheld shots this feature allows the audience to feel as if there in the shoes of the characters. It is also used to create terror and a sense of Unknown which is generic in horror films. and example of this is paranormal activity

They also use POV shots to create excitement and signify the Unknown.

Iconography

The conventional visual style of horror normally uses red and black giving connations of evil, anger and danger. Clothes are often dirty and torn..characters often wear a costume to distinguish them self from everyone else e.g. Michael Myers's white mask in Halloween

Horror trailer tend to use props to signify the genre of the film. props used in horrors normally include knifes, chainsaws, fake blood, guns and dolls an example of this is chainsaw massacre

horror lighting is generically dim and dark this is used to create a sense of unknown by not revealing much to the audience
