North Los Angeles Division 3 – 100 Years Old And Going Strong On May 22, 1907 the trolley cars of the Los Angeles Railway pulled out of the rail yard o= Figueroa Street in the mostly wide-open fields of North Los Angeles to begin providing public transportation service.

On May 22, 2007 the buses of Metro’s North Los Angeles Division 3 will pull out of the bus yard near Figueroa Street in the residential area of Cypress Park to continue a 100-year tradition of public service.

There have been many changes during the last century at the bustling yard at West Avenue 28 and Idell Street, transforming it from car barns and train tracks for wooden electric trolleys to bus bays and a compressed natural gas fueling station for 200 buses.

The first buses, or motor coaches as they were known back then, made their appearance at the location in 1945 to expand its service area. The last of the rail cars were phased out in 1955 giving way to even more bus service.

And there have been several name changes over the years. What began as the Los Angeles Railway in 1907 became Los Angeles Transit lines in the 1940s, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority in the 1950s, the Southern California Rapid Transit District in the 1960s and finally the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in the 1990s.

On the anniversary of its 100th year, the division is home to more than 200 buses, 400 operators and 100 mechanics. Fourteen bus lines originate at the division reaching as far as Pasadena, Hollywood, west and central LA.

But whatever the vehicles or names or routes, North Los Angeles Division 3 exists to provide public transportation and has for 100 years.
