Our wise and loving Heavenly Father has given us commandments to help us become

more like him. The commandments given are never to restrict us, limit us, take away our freedom or

take something away from us. In fact, they liberate us, strengthen us, enlarge us, and help us to

become more like His son, Jesus Christ. Learning to be unselfish is crucial to becoming like Him. The law

that the Lord has given is to help us learn to be generous and eliminate selfishness is the law of tithing

and offerings. As I have reflected on this law, I have thought how wise our Savior is to have given it to

us. People’s pocket books and wallets are pretty dear to them and giving up their hard-earned money

is a true test of faith. I served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at SUNY Buffalo for 11 years

and was responsible for a Budget of $20 million. A tax was required of all surgeons to run financial affairs

of the Department. Most issues which I was required to deal with rarely raised much interest or passion

in the faculty members -----except money. I learned that people are not anxious to part with their hard-

earned money and so the Lord obviously knew what he was doing when he gave this commandment.

Only those who truly have faith will be willing to obey this commandment and keep it faithfully. In a

true sense, the law of tithing is really the school marm to prepare us for the higher law of consecration.

If we have a hard time living the law of tithing, it will be very hard to live the law of consecration.

The Law of Tithing in this dispensation was formally given as a revelation in Section 119 of

the Doctrine & Covenants. In a real sense, it was given because of the unwillingness of the Saints to live

the Law of Consecration. The revelation was given in 1838—some 8 years after thee organization of the

Church. It reads, “And this shall be the beginning of the tithing of my people. And after that, those

who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing

law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord.” To those who were not willing to pay an

honest and complete tithe, the Lord states, “…they shall not be found worthy to abide among you.”

While given in 1838, this law has been practiced since antiquity and has always been present when

there was a covenant people. In Alma 13:15, we are told that Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek

(“paid tithing of one-tenth part of all he possessed.”). In Malachi we read of the great promises of

tithing in chapter 3:8-10: “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we

robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this

whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and

prove me now herewith saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour

you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” What a marvelous promise and

potential blessing that is—to open up the windows of heaven to bless us!

As we teach our investigators, makes sure that you explain some of the above. Help

them understand that the Lord is pretty serious when he tells us that we need to obey this law. You

can’t be baptized if you don’t obey the law, you can’t go to the temple if you don’t obey the law, and

you are not a Saint in good standing if you don’t pay it. Some will counter with something like, “All you

churches care about is my money” or “I shouldn’t have to pay money to go to church.” We need to

explain that God doesn’t need our money. He created the Universe and all things that in them are. However, we very much need this law to help us learn to be unselfish and prepare for the day when we will live the law of consecration. There are thousands of testimonials from full tithe payers that demonstrate how generous the Lord is when we pay our tithing. We will never go without if we pay it. That is a promise from our Father. When I was in medical school and was poor as a church mouse, we finished the month of November with no money in the house. No money to pay rent, no money to buy food, no money to fill the car with gas—except for the $40 we had saved to pay tithing. You can believe me when I tell you we were very tempted to use that sacred money for our personal needs—it would be very easy to rationalize. But as we discussed things, we realized that it wasn’t our money; it belonged to the Lord. So, we paid our tithing and now had NO money at all. It was a scary time but we felt good about our decision. A week later $100 came to us in the mail from an anonymous donor whom we never discovered. The Lord had blessed us wonderfully and generously because we had the faith and were obedient to this law.

May we teach this discussion unapologetically and with enthusiasm and powerful testimony. It really is a law of faith and obedience, isn’t it! May the Lord bless you as you teach this fundamental law and help your investigators understand why the Lord has given it to us is my prayer.

Con deseos de no ser egoísta,

Joyfulness vs. Self-Pity

Message From Hermana Dayton

21 de Febrero de 2016El Clarín de El Faro

Joyfulness is maintaining a good attitude, even when faced with unpleasant conditions. Christ reminds us that joy comes by keeping the commandments, "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my JOY might remain in you, and that your JOY might be full." John 15:10-11. So, as we keep the commandments and have a good attitude our countenances radiate God's love through us. Joy is one of those attributes that are multiplied as we give it away by serving others and being joyful. And as we serve others our countenances radiate God's love and we experience what I call, the "missionary glow".

As we were raising our family we decided this scripture would be our focus, "Men are that they might have JOY." In fact our family based our entire Family Mission Statement around joy and happiness. A few of you have asked for this so I thought I would share it in this weeks message on Joy.

Family Mission Statement "To achieve, for each member of the family, and together as a family, the highest possible level of joy and happiness both during this life and throughout eternity. We recognize that happiness will come about as a result of our individual and collective commitment to righteous goals and heartfelt sacrifices that will assist other family members and our fellow men.

What Brings Personal Joy:Individual success in home, school and extracurricular activities.A clean and orderly work and play environment.Health and strength to perform daily activities.Fun experiences with family members and others: laughter.A variety of self fulfilling experiences; a proper balance between work, rest, and play.Recognition for what I do well.

Message From Hermana Dayton

21 de Febrero de 2016El Clarín de El Faro

The respect of others for who I am and what I have to offer.Development of personal talents.Service to family and others. And overall, Approval of my Heavenly Father, knowing what I am doing is right."

We can apply joyfulness in missionary work by:

--Greeting your companion each day with a cheerful smile and by speaking complimentary words ofpraise.

--Keeping your apartment bright, clean, and with uplifting music.--Remaining positive when your situation is not ideal and things are not going as planned.--Smiling and laughing throughout the day--seeing the bright side of life.--Keeping your mind on others instead of yourself.

In closing, I want to share Elder Cook's favorite Book of Mormon scripture found in Alma 29:9, "I know that which the Lord hath commanded me, and I glory in it. I do not glory of myself, but I glory in that which the Lord hath commanded me; yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul to repentance; and this is my JOY." We love you and pray that each one of you are finding JOY in this marvelous work of bringing others to Christ.

Much love, gratitude and admiration--

One of the wonderful

miracles we saw this week was

Mario's baptism! He's been

progressing amazingly in the

short time I've been here, and

seeing him take this step was

so rewarding. We were so

grateful to have you there. As

you saw he wasn't a man for

many words, but his attempts

to describe what that moment

meant for him were humbling

for me. I love this work and this

wonderful area. The Branch

President has him preparing to

go to the temple THIS

WEEKEND! We're trying to get

everything sorted out because

it would be incredible for him

to make that step.

he has decided once and for

all to be baptized. We were

ecstatic! We passed by last

week and spent time

strengthening him for his

baptism. He was able to pass

his interview and was baptized

by our bishop on Saturday. We

had a great service planned

and everything came to pass

how we wanted it to. He was

confirmed a member of the

going to be an incredible

The Miracle of Baptism

21 de Febrero de 2016El Clarín de El Faro

This week was marvelous.

We finally saw the baptism we

have been waiting for ever

since I got here. We have

been working super hard with

Ferran and his family, and it

finally payed off. He was so

prepared. The service was

incredible! We literally didn't

have to do anything to

prepare for it. The ward did all

the work together with the

family. All we did was fill the

font with hot water, and they

did the rest. It was so great to

see the ward take charge and

prepare everything. Although

the service was in Catalan,

there was a great spirit there,

and you could tell that it was a

moment the family had been

waiting for for a long time. Now

all we need is to help the other

son make the decision to get

baptized.

Dear President! This week we

had a miracle, because Rocío

got bautized!!! And yes, I

promise, it was a miracle,

because she was not making it

easy for us. (That and because

bautismo is a miracle en sí). We

visited with her pretty much

every day and played every

card we could, because she

was super prepared, but just

wouldn't make that final

decision. But we were guided

by the spirit because Élder

_____decided to bring a

member who saved us big

time. And we also were given

what to say in the moment

that we needed it. And finally

she got bautized!!! It was

fantastic.

The Miracle of Baptism

21 de Febrero de 2016El Clarín de El Faro

This week we had the

miracle of baptism! His name

is Gonzalo, and was already

prepared to be baptized

when I got here. I just showed

and helped prepare the

baptism, but it was an

amazing service. His wife is a

member and his son that was

about to

turn 9 was also baptized with

him! We had to travel to the

church in ____ because

there's not a baptismal font in

____. My companion

Elder______ baptized

Gonzalo, and I played the

piano. Gonzalo was crying at

the end of the service. And

some members invited family

members and one of them

asked my companion "why

do I feel so good when I walk

in this church?" Baptisms are

miracles! Potential

Investigators!
