Ok, maybe for “globe trotters” like karters, it may be tough to agree with Manolo Escobar that Spain is absolutely “la mejor,” but for sure the country has a special flare. And this is true for karting, too. Not perchance, after La Conca and the Napoli International Circuit, Zuera is the track where the WSK has held the most races. This 2013 event is the seventh to be hosted by this top level venue close to Zaragoza that always guarantees great excitement and entertainment. Vamos a ganar, muchachos!

Ok, forse, per dei “giramondo” come i kartisti, è difficile dire se sia in assoluto “la mejor”, come canta Manolo Escobar, ma sicuramente la Spagna ha un sole, un calore e, appunto, un sapore, speciali. Anche per il karting. Non è un caso che Zuera sia, dopo La Conca e il Circuito Internazionale Napoli, la pista in cui la WSK ha corso più volte. Questo appuntamento del 2013 è il settimo nella struttura al top vicino a Saragozza, che ha sempre regalato emozioni e divertimento. Vamos a ganar, muchachos!

KZ1: VERSTAPPEN DOMINATION

Less than a month ago, when he won round one of the WSK Master Series, many said: “OK, great! Except, many of the big guns were missing.” This

time all the big names are here and Max Verstappen (CRG/TM) wins again, twice (Final 1 and Final 2), cancelling all doubts. And he does so not as a runaway off grid, but battling to regain the top spot and holding on to it until the checkered. Behind the Dutchman in Final 2 there is English driver Ben Hanley (ArtGP/TM), followed by the other Dutchman Jorrit Pex (CRG/TM), racing with the same chassis and engine as Verstappen and the same tuner (Jos Verstappen, Max’s dad). Italian Paolo De Conto (Birel/TM) takes fourth, followed by French driver Jeremy Iglesias (Lenzo/LKE) and the Czech Patrik Hajek (Praga/Parilla). Instead, closing behind Verstappen in Saturday’s Final 1 were Pex, De Conto, and English driver Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG/Maxter). Fifth went to Frenchman Arnaud Kozlinski (2009 winner of the WSK Euro Series in KF1), on Birel/TM, who at the start of Final 2 was victim of a nasty accident that forced the race director to stop the race, but that, luckily, left him unharmed. In the heats three wins were also by Verstappen and one, on Sunday, was by Pex.

Neanche un mese fa, quando vinse il primo round della WSK Master Series, molti dissero “OK, bravo! Ma mancano tanti grandi nomi”. Questa volta i

grandi nomi ci sono tutti e Max Verstappen (CRG/TM) vince di nuovo, due volte (Finale 1 e Finale 2), spazzando via ogni possibile dubbio. Non va in fuga solitaria dal via, ma battaglia per riguardagnare la prima posizione e poi non lasciarla più fino alla bandiera a scacchi. Alle spalle dell’olandese in Finale 2 c’è l’inglese Ben Hanley (ArtGP/TM), seguito da Jorrit Pex (CRG/TM), che con Verstappen condivide telaio, motore, preparatore (Jos Verstappen, padre di Max) e nazionalità. Quarto in Finale 2 l’italiano Paolo De Conto (Birel/TM), che precede il transalpino Jeremy Iglesias (Lenzo/LKE) e il ceco Patrik Hajek (Praga/Parilla). Nella prima Finale, corsa sabato, alle spalle di Verstappen si era classificato Pex, seguito da De Conto, l’inglese Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG/Maxter). E Arnaud Kozlinski (Birel/TM), che al via della Finale 2 è rimasto vittima di un brutto incidente che ha costretto il direttore di gara a interrompere la corsa. Per fortuna il pilota francese (vincitore della WSK Euro Series in KF1 nel 2009), non ha avuto nessuna conseguenza. Nelle manche tre vittorie per Verstappen e una per Pex la domenica.

KZ2: ZANCHETTA, BY A HAIR

Two thousandths: 0.002 seconds. This is the gap between Marco Zanchetta (Maranello/TM), as he wins Final 2, and Riccardo Negro (DR/TM), who

crosses the finish-line with arms raised in joy while the first spot is being snatched from him. Marco Zanchetta also won the two heats on Sunday, both times over Birel Motorsport’s Czech driver Jan Midrla (Birel/TM), who in Final 2 is third at the checkered. Swedish driver Joel Johansson (Energy/TM) takes fourth, over Italian Loris Spinelli (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Romenian Tomi Dragan (Lenzo/LKE). In Final 1, instead, it was Riccardo Negri and the Danilo Rossi team who took the win, followed on the podium by Jan Midrla and Marco Zanchetta. Fourth went to Tomi Dragan and fifth to defending KZ2 Euro Series champion Simas Juodvirsis (Energy/TM), followed by Renda Motorsport’s Francesco Celenta (Zanardi/TM), who on Saturday was a star in the heats, taking a double win. Negro gets 2nd place twice, while 3rd place goes once to Jan Midrla and once to Tomi Dragan. Francesco Celenta was also the fastest of the qualifyings, while the best laps of the two finals were scored respectively by Tomi Dragan, in Final 1, and Riccardo Negro, in Final 2.

Quarto lo svedese Joel Johansson (Energy/TM), che anticipa l’italiano Loris Spinelli (Tony Kart/Vortex) e il romeno Tomi Dragan (Lenzo/LKE). In Finale 1, invece, vince il pilota del team di Danilo Rossi Riccardo Negro, seguito sul podio da Jan Midrla e da Marco Zanchetta. Quarto Tomi Dragan, quinto il campione della Euro Series KZ2 in carica Simas Juodvirsis (Energy/TM), seguito dal campano del team Renda Motorsport Francesco Celenta (Zanardi/TM), che sabato è protagonista delle manche vincendole entrambe. Negro ottiene due secondi posti, mentre i due terzi se li spartiscono Jan Midrla e Tomi Dragan. Francesco Celenta è anche il più veloce nelle prove di qualifica, mentre i giri veloci delle due finali se li spartiscono Tomi Dragan, nella prima, e Riccardo Negro, nella seconda.

KF: BARNICOAT TAKES THE FINAL

The first to cross the finish-line in Sunday’s Final was Art Grand Prix’s English driver Ben Barnicoat (ArtGP/TM), followed by Tony Kart Racing Team’s

Karol Basz (Tony Kart/Vortex), from Poland, and French rookie Dorian Boccolacci (Energy/TM), who in the race almost puled the second big hit of his debut season after winning his first ever KF race in round one of the WSK Master Series. Too bad, in fact, for his smear at the last corner, where he is passed by a great Barnicoat and sent down to the third spot. Birel Motorsport’s English driver George Russell (Birel/TM) won the Prefinal, conquering pole for the Final: here he progressively lost ground and closed seventh. In the championship standings he’s in any case second. In the Final, Kosmic Racing Department’s official Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic/Vortex) took fourth place, followed by Russian Vasily Romanov (Energy/TM). In the Superpole the best man was Callum Ilott (Zanardi/Parilla), who schools the fastest of the qualifying sessions, Karol Basz. Heat wins were shared by eight drivers; the only ones who “doubled up” were Russell and Martin Kodric (FA Kart/Vortex). Too bad for Armand Convers (Kosmic/Vortex), one of the weekend’s fastest, out of the games at the first corner of the final.

Nella Finale di domenica è il britannico della Art Grand Prix Ben Barnicoat (ArtGP/TM) a tagliare il traguardo per primo, seguito dal polacco del

Tony Kart Racing Team Karol Basz (Tony Kart/Vortex) e dal rookie francese Dorian Boccolacci (Energy/TM) che, nel suo anno di esordio, stava facendo un altro colpaccio dopo la vittoria nella prima sua gara in KF nel primo round della WSK Master Series, peccato per la sbavatura all’ultima curva in cui Barnicoat fa un sorpassone e lui chiude addirittura terzo. In Prefinale a imporsi è l’inglese del team Birel Motorsport George Russell (Birel/TM), che in Finale parte primo ma perde terreno e chiude solamente settimo. Nella classifica di campionato è comunque secondo. Quarto in Finale il pilota ufficiale del Kosmic Racing department Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic/Vortex), seguito dal russo Vasily Romanov (Energy/TM). Nella Superpole il primo tempo lo fa segnare Callum Ilott (Zanardi/Parilla), che beffa il più veloce delle due sessioni di prove di qualifica, Karol Basz. Nelle manche di qualifica vincono otto piloti differenti; gli unici a fare “doppietta” sono Russell e Martin Kodric (FA Kart/Vortex). Peccato per Armand Convers (Kosmic/Vortex), tra i più veloci del week end ma fuori dai giochi alla prima curva della finale.

KF-J: THE NORRIS CONSTANT

Lando Norris (FA Kart/Vortex) begins his flight towards victory as early as Friday’s qualifying sessions, where he scores the best time. From here

he follows up with best lap in the Superpole (earning three points towards the title hunt), then three victories in his four heats. Yet, nineteenth place in the first qualififcation race sets him at seventh overall in the combined post-heats standings. No problem, Ricky Flynn Motorsport’s English driver goes on to win his Prefinal (the A) anyways and also rules the Final. Here right behind Norris is Baby Race’s Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart/Vortex), who also closed second behind the English driver in Prefinal A. The third spot of the Final, instead, goes to Ward Racing’s Russian driver Vladimir Atoev (Tony Kart/Vortex), followed in fourth by German David Beckmann (Zanardi/BMB) on a Keijzer Racing kart and in fifth by Energy’s Parker Thompson (Energy/TM) from Canada. The winner of Prefinal B is Morsicani Racing’s Italian Leonardo Pulcini (Tony Kart/Vortex), who placed sixth in the Final. A note of mention also goes to Alessio Lorandi’s brother, Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/Vortex), first overall after the heats, followed by Daniel Ticktum (FA Kart/Vortex).

La corsa di Lando Norris (FA Kart/Vortex) verso la vittoria parte da venerdì nelle sessioni di qualifica, quando fa segnare il miglior tempo. Subito dopo

segue il best lap nella Superpole (che gli vale tre punti in classifica), poi tre vittorie nelle sue quattro manche di qualifica. A causa di un diciannovesimo posto in classifica nella sua prima gara, però è costretto a occupare la settima posizione nella classifica combinata. Il britannico del team Ricky Flynn Motorsport vince comunque la sua Prefinale (la A) e domina anche la Finale. Alle spalle di Norris in finale c’è Alessio Lorandi del team Baby Race (Tony Kart/Vortex), che occupa la seconda posizione sempre dietro all’inglese anche nella Prefinale A. Terzo in Finale è il russo della Ward Racing Vladimir Atoev (Tony Kart/Vortex), quarto il tedesco David Beckmann (Zanardi/BMB) su un kart della Keijzer Racing e quinto il canadese della Energy Parker Thompson (Energy/TM). Vincitore della Prefinale B è l’italiano della Morsicani Racing Leonardo Pulcini (Tony Kart/Vortex), poi sesto in finale. PRESTIGEA championship gets its fame from the names of participants: WSK races feature the best drivers and the top manufacturers of world karting, with their F1-level work stations and hospitality areas. WSK championships are also “FIA Authorised Series”: this is the seal of approval that the International Automobile Federation gives to the most prestigious motorsport series.

PRESTIGIOLa fama di un campionato è dato dal nome dei partecipanti: nelle gare WSK ci sono i piloti migliori e i costruttori al top del karting mondiale con le loro strutture officina e hospitality da F1. I campionati WSK sono anche “FIA Authorised Series”: questo è il sigillo di qualità dato dalla Federazione Internazionale dell’Automobile alle serie più prestigiose del motorsport.

MINI KARTToday’s youngest drivers are tomorrow’s champions: WSK Promotion has always valued the importance of nourishing a plentiful and high-quality breeding ground of new talents. In fact, the first top-level international series for 60 Mini drivers dates back to 2006 and was called Euro Trophy by 60. The promoter? WSK, of course.

FACTORGRAN GALAEvery year WSK Promotion holds a ceremony to celebrate the series winners and the Driver of the Year. Like in F1, awards also go to the top manufacturers and teams. In addition, there is a chestful of trophies in store at each event: for the Superpole in the KF categories, the two Finals in the KZ classes, and the double Prefinal in the KF-Junior.

GRAN GALÀOgni anno WSK Promotion organizza una serata di gala per premiare tutti i vincitori dei campionati e il Driver of the Year. Come succede in F1, poi, c’è una classifica riservata a costruttori e squadre. I premi non mancano anche nei singoli weekend di gara: grazie alla Superpole per le categorie KF, la doppia Finale per le KZ e la doppia Prefinale per i piloti KF-Junior, è una pioggia di trofei.
